Be it known that I, HENRY PRICE BALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borou h of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and tate of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Grid or Grill, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to devices on which steaks, chops or the'like may be broiled or grilled, and more particularly to such a device which may be employed in connection with a heating device employing aclohol' as a fuel,-such as is illustrated and; described in the copending application for patent executed on even date herewith, but it is to be understood that the device of the invention may, in whole or in parts, be employed in connection with other-forms of fuel and with or without the use of astove or lamp.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described in which the heat will be evenly distributed over the surface; which may be in sections thereby promoting portability, the surface of which may be extended; in which leakage between the sections will be prevented; which will be cheap to construct and install;
7 in which the greases andjuices produced by ceeking may be collected and saved; and whichwillnmt getout oforder.v
These and further objects will more fully appear in the following specification and accompanying drawings considered'together or separately. 7
The invention is designed primarily for dining and bufi'et cars, but it is to be understood that it maybe employed-in other situations. p
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like parts" in all-of the several figures are designated by' similar characters of-reference, and in which-e v Figure 1 is a top plan view of the grid or grill constructedin accordance with the invention. I

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated l designates a hearth which may be composed of brick, tiling or the like, and 2 the side walls of the cooking compartment which may be of similar material. Arranged on each side wall is a series of rails 3 on which is supported as by means of rollers 4, a frame 5 in which rests a pair of grill members 6 and 7.
Each grill member comprises a front rail 8 and a back rail 9. The height of'the back rail 9 is greater than that of the front rail 8. Therails are connected by a' plate 10 formed of parallel plications extending from the backrail 9 to a point within a short distance from the front railS That portion of the plate 10 between the front ends of the plications and the front rail lies below the level of the plications to form a trough 12 between the plicated portion of the plate and the front rail.
The tops of the plications of the plate are on the levels of the tops of the rails 8 and 9, and consequently the plate 10 is higher at the back than at the front and the grooves formed by the plications will drain tothe front and into the trough 12. The bottom of the trough 12 is higher 'at one end than at the other and the lower end of the trough is provided with a drain opening 13, as shown, whereby fluids drained from the plate 10 will be discharged at one corner of the grill into a cup or other receptacle placed beneath the opening 13,

The frame 5 comprises end members, by which the rollers 4 are carried, and. a front member 14 and a backmember 15. The front and back members are provided with flanges on which the rails 8 and Q'rest where by the grill member issupported in the frame.
The grill-member ispreferably composed of cast iron and: the plications appear on both sides thereof whereby a light andeasily handled structure will be produced. At one complete butpresents a downturned ledge 17. In order to provide for a more equalized distribution of heat over the surface of the grill, the valleys on the underside of the grill are obliterated in part, at least whereby the plate is thickened, as at 18, and the increased mass of metal in the thickened portion or portions and the greater conductivity of heat by such portion, together with the relatively small radiating surface of the thickened portions, will more evenly distribute the heat. and to a greater distance from the directly heated portion, than will the relatively thin metal of the majorpon tion of the plate. The greater conductivity of the portions 18 will also prevent the plate from becoming unduly heated at the point or points directly over the source, or sources, of heat, and will prevent warping of the plate.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in which the stove or burner above mentioned is preferably employed as the heating medium, four thickened zones are shown, each comprising a circular portion beneath which a fuel receptacle is positioned, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, and with a tail radiating to a corner of the grill. It is to be understood that as many portions 18 as there are sources of heat used may be employed, or a single thickened portion having a plurality of radiating tails may be used.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes the principle of the invention, together with what is now considered to be the best embodiment thereof, have been described, but it is to be understood that the apparatus described is merely illustrative, and that the invention may be can ,ried out in other ways.
The invention having been described what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is A device of the character described, comprising a relatively thin plate adapted to be positioned abovethe flame of a source of heat, that portion of the plate directly above the flame being of relatively small area as compared to the area of the plate, there being a portion of the plate thicker than the major portion thereof, said thickened portion adapted to be in vertical aline ment with the source of heat.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a relatively thin plate adapted to be positioned above the flame of a source of heat, that portion of the plate directly above the flame being of relatively small area as compared to the area of the plate, there being a portion of the plate thicker than the major portion thereof, said thickened portion adapted to be in vertical alinement with the source of heat, and having a portion thereof extending to a distance therefrom.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a plicated plate, there being portions of the valleys on the under side of the plate obliterated to form zones of greater thickness than the body of the plate.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a plicated plate, there being portions of the valleys on the under side of the plate obliterated to form zones of greater thickness than the body of the plate, said thickened portions being of comet-like form.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a plicated plate, there being p0rtions of the valleys on the under side of the plate obliterated to form zones of greater thickness than the'body of thepla-te,said
thickened portions being of comet-like form, with the tail thereof extending toward the edge of the plate.
GJA device of the character described, comprising a plicated plate, the plications extending to opposite extremities of the plate the outer plications being incomplete, that at one side of having a downturned turned edge.
7. A device of the character described, comprising a plicated plate, supports for the plates, said supports extending across opposite ends of the plate and at right angles edge, the opposite plication" having an upto plications thereof, one support being higher than the other whereby the plate will he pitched to drain toward one end thereof, there being a trough between the plications and the lower support and extending at right angles to the plications, said trough being lower at one end than at the other and having a drain'opening at the lower end.
8. A device of the character described,
comprising a plurality of plicated plates arranged sideby-side with the plications arranged side-by-side and parallel, the pli cation at one side of one plate having a downturned edge, the pli'cation at one side of the adjoining plate having an'upturned edge, the said downturned edge overlapping the upturned edge of the adjoining plate, and a frame for supporting the plate.
9. A device of the character described,
comprising a plurality ofplica-ted plates I arranged side-by-side with the plications arranged side-by-side' and parallel, the plication at one side of each plate having a 13 t downturned edge, the plication of the pnosite side of each plate having an upturned edge, the said downturned edge of one plate overlapping the upturned edge of the ad 5 joining plate, and a frame for supporting he plates.
10. A device of the character described, comprising a plurality of plicated plates arranged side-by-side with the plications ar ranged side-by-side and parallel, the plica tions at one side of each plate having a downturned edge, the plication at the opposite side of each plate having an upturned edge, the said downturned edge of one plate overlapping the upturned edge of the ada drain opening in the lower portion of each trough, and a frame for supporting the plates. i r
