AIR-GUN.
Application filed. December 20, 1920.
Be it known thatl, ERNEST S. Ron, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at. Plymouth, inthe county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to air guns and refers particularly to air guns of the break down type. One of the objects of the invention is the provision of an elf-center lock for maintaining the sections of the gun in alinement. Another object is the arrange ment of the link which is connected to the barrel of the gun and is adapted to move the plunger to cocked position, for maintaining the barrel in alinement with the casing. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an air gun embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion thereof with thesections in alinement;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion thereof, partly in section, with the sections in brokenrdown position;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the gun when the sections are in alinement; 7
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of a modified construction of gun[ 1 is the stock of the gun, 2 the casing, and 3 the barrel. The casing has the depending side flanges 4L and the barrel has the depending side flanges 5 which are pivotally connected at their rear ends to the forward ends of the depending side flanges L as at G. 7 is a plunger longitudinally slidable within the cylinder 7 mounted in the cas ing 2, and 8 is a coil spring for yieldably forcing the plunger in an outward direction to force air under pressure through the abutment 9 at the end of the cylinder 7 and also through the true barrel 10 within the false barrel 3.
For moving the plunger 7 to cocked position, there is the link 11 pivotally connected at its forward end to the depending side flanges 5 as at 12 and pivotally connected Specification of Letters Patent.

at its rear end to the depending side flanges l as at 12"). The pivot 13 slidably engages in the longitudinally extending slots let in the depending side flanges 4:. The plunger 7 has the stem 15 provided at its rear end with the downwardly extending stepped portion 16, which latter has the front step 17' adapted to be engaged by the rear end of the link 11 upon breaking-,downmovement of the false barrel and the rear step 18 which isadapted to be engaged by the sear portion 19 of the trigger 20 when the stem is moved back sufliciently far. This sear portion extends forwardly a substantial distancefrom the finger portion 21 of the trigger so that together with the stepped construction of the plunger stem, interfer once by the finger guard 22 with the link 11 is avoided when swinging the false barrel downwardly relative to the casing. For the purpose of locking the. gun sections in alinement when their adjacent ends contact, the pivot 6 connecting the depending side flanges t and 5 is secured to the side of the line between the pivots 12 and 13 or the link 11 farthest from the gun sections so that an off-center lock is provided. With this arrangement, the locking is effected by the link which is adapted to move the plunger to cocked position.
23 is a coil spring mounted upon the easing 2 and adapted to abut the rear end of the link 11 to permit of the limited movement of the same when the gun sections are i being swung into or out of alined position. 24 is a combined housing and guide member having the end portion 25 adapted to be engaged by the inner end of the coil spring 28 this member at being suitably secured between the depending side fiangesd of the-casing 2 and cooperating with the lower part of the casing to inclose and secure the coil spring in place. This coil spring has its inner coil 26 of a normaldiameter greater than that of any ofthe other coils and alsogreater than the distance between the-lower part of the casing 2 and the member 24 so that when the coil spring 23 is forced into engagement between the member 24 and the lower part of the easing 2, the inner coil 26 is compressed and will be frictionally held, thereby retaining the coil spring in place.
As shown in Fig. 4, the link 11 completely closes the space between the depending side flanges 4 and 5 throughout substantially its length, and as shown in Fig. 2, the lower face of this link is substantially flush with the lower edges of these flanges, when the gun sections are in alinement so that a neat and pleasing appearance is secured.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, instead of having a link which is adapted to lie between the depending side flanges, I have provided a link which extends at the sides of the depending side flanges. In detail, 27 is a U-shaped link pivotally connected at its ends to the depending side flanges 28 of the barrel base 30 of the U slidably engaging in tho longitudinally extending slots 31 ofthe depending side flanges 32 of the casing 33. The arms of this U-shaped link extend substantially parallel to the outer sides of the de sendin side flanges.
- Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In an air gun, the combination with a pair of sections pivotally connected to each other, of a link pivotally connected to said sections and adapted to hold the same in alinement, the pivot between said sections being to one side of the line between the link pivots when said sections are in alinement.
2. In an air gun, the combination with apair of sections pivotally connected to each other, of a link pivotally connected to said sections and adapted to hold the same in alinement, the pivot between said sections being to the side of the line between the link pivots farthest from said sections when in alinement, and a yieldable abutment for one of said link pivots.
3. In an air gun, the combination with a casing having depending side flanges with longitudinally extending slots therein, of a barrel having depending side flanges, a pivot extending between said side flanges, a link adapted to lie between said side flanges, a pivot between the forward end of said link and said barrel side flanges, a pivot bet-ween the rear end of said link and said casing side flanges and slidably engaging in said slits, said first-mentioned pivot being to the side of the line between the link pivots farthest from said casing and barrel when in alinement, and means secured to said casing for yieldably engaging the rear end of said link.
4:- In an air gun, the combination with a casing having depending side flanges with longitudinally extending slots therein, of a barrel having depending side flanges, a pivot 29 and having the 1 extending between said side flanges, a link adapted to lie between said side flanges, a pivot between the forward end of said link and said barrel side flanges, a pivot between the rear end of said link and said casing side flanges and slidably engaging in said slots, said first-mentioned pivot belng to the side of the line between the link pivots farthest from said casing and barrel when in alinement, means secured to said casing for yieldably engaging the rear end of said link, a coil spring carried by said casing and engageable by the rear end of said link, and a plunger movable within said casing and movable to cocked position by said link upon swin ing of said barrel about'said casing.
5. 11 an air un, the combination with a casing having epending side flanges with longitudinally extending slots therein, of a casing having depending side flanges pivotally connected to said casing side flanges, a link adapted to lie between said side flanges, a pivot connecting the forward end of said link to said barrel side flanges, a pivot connecting the rear end of said link to said casing side flanges and slidably engaging in said slots, a plunger within said casing, a stem connected to said plunger and having at its rear end a depending stepped portion with the forward step extending into the path of movement of the rearend of said link and the rear step extending below said forward step, and trigger mechanism having a finger portion and a sear portion forward of said finger portion and engageable with said rear step.
6. In an air gun, the combination with a pair of sections pivotally connected to each other, of a link pivotally connected to said sections and adapted to hold the same in alinement, a coil spring engageable by said link, provided with an inner coil having a normal diameter greater than that of any of the other coils, and means for frictionally engaging said inner coil to retain said coil spring in place.
In an air gun, the combination with a coil spring having an inner coil of greater normal diameter than that of any-of the other coils, of a housing for a portion of said coilspringhaving oppositeside walls spaced apart a less distance than the normal diameter of said inner coil and frictionally engaging the same.
In testimony-whereof I affix my si naturc.
