Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. HUeHns, a citizen or the United States residing at Mansfield, in the county of llichland and State 01" ()hio, have invented a new and useful Steel Partition and Hollow Door, 01 which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a. means for look ing the panels oi? pressed steel toilet partitions and hollow doors.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a lock which will adapt itself to the varying thicknesses of pressed steel sheets and yet will. be strong and secure.
Another object is to provide an interlocking construction which will hold panels without the necessity of spot welding and the consequent liability oi buckling.
A further object in mind is to construct a lock which will be practical from the standpoint-s of both the shop and economy.
In order to comprehend this invention, its scope, advantages and possibilities, reference should be made to the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a steel partition or hollow door embodying one form of my invention.

Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. 1
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, 10 designates a hollow stile ot a steel partition or door, and 11 designates a molding which might be termed a clamping molding. As seen in Fig. 2, the molding 11 is in two parts or jaws separated from each other by a space. A panel 12 is gripped between the two parts or jaws of the mold ing, hence the space between the parts or jaws is made wide enough to admit panels of above average thickness. Each part of the molding 11 consists of a rounded outside portlon, a longitudinal locking flange 13 and a cross flange 14, the two latter parts being ntegral with the former and the molding being integral with the stile. As shown. the cross flange 1 1 is bent at right angles to the locking flange, thereby providing means for inturned flanges 1.5 of a crowned clip 16 to grip the two parts of the molding.
This crowned clip is semi-elliptical in :torm with a convex outer face and a concave inner face. As will be appreciated, the crown clip 16 will force the gripping flanges 13 closer togethenthereby holding the panel 12 firmly between the two jaws of the mold- 111g.
As shown best in Fig. 3, the clip 16 has at each end a pair of locking lugs or lips 17 which are struck from the crowned or conven face of the lip. These lugs or lips 17, being so formed, are therefore longer than the width of the cross flange 14. The panel 12 is normally held so that its inner edge 19 extends straight out beyond the cross flanges and bears against the inner or concave face of the clip and is locked by said lugs or lips 1n that position. The locking is accomplished by forcing the lugs fiat against the cross flanges 14, which because of the length of the lugs, will cause the ends 18 to bend against and grip with considerable force the panel 12.
In assembling the parts of this construction, the panel is inserted between the jaws of the molding and the clip is driven on from one end, thereby gripping the panel. Then the locking lugs are forced against the cross flange and the panel with a bent bar. thus binding the panel. I
In Fig. 4: I have shown an improvement on the construction hereinbefore described, said improvement consisting in providing one or more longitudinal corrugations 1.9" on the extended edge of the panel 12, by deflecting said edge in two directions, said corrugation being engaged by the lugs or lips 17. This construction is stronger and better and is consequently preferred, particularly for large Work. 1
Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to a hollow partition or door construction, wherein the panel is formed of two sheets or plates 12 with an interposed filler 12", each plate having a corrugation 19* on its edge engaged by the lips or lugs 17.
one of which is bent down to engage the deflected marginal edge of the panel, while the other lip bears against the flat edge of said marginal edge.
The above-described construction is well adapted. not only for partitions between toilet compartments, but could be employed to advantage inmaking hollow steel doors, sash, and furniture, in. Pullman car construction, and wherever metallic panels and sheets are required to be locked to a frame.
It will be noted that the present invention consists of but three parts, the stile with its molding, the panel, and the clip. Each of these parts is in one piece, and no bolts, rivets, screws, or welds areemployed. The clip not only forces thetwo parts ofthe molding, together thus gripping the paneltherebtween, but also itself grips and locks the panel through the intermediation of locking lugs. 'ihns the panel is held by the jaws of the molding and at the same time by-the locking lugs. This makes a very tight and strong joint, and yet does not make the panel buckle as spot welding frequently does. Moreover,'it will be seen that while the inner or concave face of the clip prevents movement of the panel in one direction, the locking lugs also prevent movement in the opposlte direction. This construction makes impossible any looseness in the oint. V
This inventionhas been described in considerable detail in the foregoing specification. It is to be understood, however, that the description is illustrative of certain embodiments of my invention, and does not limit the same. I desire to be limited only by the appended claims, raving in mind the fact that changes in the form, size, proportion and the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention.
This application is a continuation in part of my applicatiomSerial No. 226,877, filed April'5, 1918, from which Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of this application have been taken.
That is claimed is: 7 ;1.-In"combination with a member havin aws,eachjaw provided with a longitudinal locking flange and a cross flange, an element inserted between said longitudinal flanges and extended out beyond the cross flanges, a clip engaged with the cross flanges and holding the jaws together about the element, and bendable lips formed on the clip and engaged with the extended portion of the element, said lips being pressed into engagement after the clip has been applied.
2. In partition or door construction, a frame having jaws, a panel passed between said jaws and extended out beyond the same, and a spring clip engaged with said jaws to force them together about the panel, said clip carrying supplemental locking means engaged with the extended portion of said panel, said locking means being brought into engagement after the clip has been applied, whereby the panel is engaged at different points by said jaws and said supplemental locking means.
3. In partition or door construction, a stile, a molding integral with the stile, said nolding having jaws, a panel passed between said jaws and having its edge extended beyond the same, and a spring clip binding the jaws about the panel and having a supplemental locking means engaging the extension of the panel beyond the jaws, said locking means being brought into ongagement after the clip has been applied.

In door or partition construction, a frame, a molding carried by the frame, said molding having jaws, each jaw formed with a longitudinal locking flange and a cross flange, a panel inserted between said jaws and having its edge extended beyond the same, and a substantially semi-elliptical clip engaging the cross flanges and forcing the jaws together to bind the panel therebctween, said clip carrying integral locking lugs which bear against the extended edge of the panel.
5. In combination with a member having jaws, each jaw including a. longitudinal locking flange and a cross flange, an element having its edge inserted between the jaws and extended beyond the same, a substantially semi-elliptical shaped clip engaging the cross flanges and binding the two jaws together about the element, and integral locking lips provided on the clip and adapted to be bent inwardly against the cross flanges, said lips being longer than said cross flanges so as to provide outwardly bent ends which engage the edge of the element beyond said locking flange.

In door or partition c nistruction, a frame, a gripping molding having jaws and being carried by the frame, a panel held by the jaws, a semi-elliptical clip normally forcing said jaws together, said clip having lugs struck from its face, said lugs engaging the panel under tension and locking the same in its position.
7. In door or partition construction, a frame, a gripping molding integral with the frame,said molding consisting of two jaws, a semi-elliptical clip normally forcing the jaws together, a panel held between said jaws in such a position that its inner edge extends out be end the jaws and locking lugs integral with the clip, said lugs having outwardly turned ends resiliently engaging the extended edge of the panel.
8. In door or partition construction, a stile, a molding integral therewith and formed with two jaws, each jaw consisting of a rounded outside portion, a locking flange and a cross flange, a panel having its edges inserted between the jaws and eX- tended beyond the same, a semi-elliptical shaped clip having inturned flanges to engage the cross flanges and bind the two jaws together about the panel, and integral looking lugs or lips struck from the clip and adapted to be bent inwardly against the cross flanges, said lips or lugs being longer than said cross'flanges so as to provide outwardly bent ends which engage the edges of the panel beyond said flanges.
9. In combination with a member having jaws, an element inserted between said jaws and extended out beyond the same and provided with a corrugation at the extended edge, and a clip engaged with said jaws to force them together about the panel, said clip having supplemental locking means engaged with the corrugation.
10. In partition or door construction, a

In partition or door construction, a frame having jaws, each jaw provided with a longitudinal locking flange and a cross flange, a panel inserted between said jaws and extended out beyond the cross flanges, the extended edge of the panel being deflected laterally, a clip engaged with the cross flanges and holding the jaws about the panel, and bendable lips formed on the clip and engaged with the deflected and extended edge of the panel.
