Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it knownthat I, EDWARD F. SLABINSKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Lock ort, county of Niagara, and State of New have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hospital-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds, being intended more particularly for embodiment in hospital beds or beds for invalids.

The invention has for one object to provide a simple arrangement of parts whereby the bed surface ma be adjusted to support the occupant wit the greatest degree of comfort in different positions, whether sitting up or partially reclining.

A further object is to provide adjustable seats or chairs and an adjustable table in connection with the bed.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description, and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a bed having the inventlon embodied therein.

Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.

As here shown the frame of my improved bed comprises the head and foot transverse members, 1 and 2 respectively which are provided with the legs 1' and 2'. These members are united by the horizontal side beams 3 which are here of circular cross section and fixed at their ends in the said members in any suitable manner. Mounted on the side beams 3, by means of feet 4, is a rectangular frame 5 which is spaced a short distance above the side beams, this frame carrying the bed springs which are arranged thereon in a novel'manner, being carried by an adjustable auxiliary frame.

This auxiliary frame comprises a pair of side arms 7-pivoted to the side members of the frame 5 at a distance from the end members substantially equal to the length of the arms and having their free ends united by a cross-bar 8. A second pair of side arms 9 are pivoted to the side members of the frame adjacent the arms and extend toward the foot of the bed, the arms 9 terminating short of the foot of the bed and having short links 10 pivotally attached thereto,

by an inwardly projecting flange 5 on the lower edge of the frame 5 within which the auxiliary frame fits snugly when in extended position. A bed spring of ordinary type, a portion of which is indicated at 14 is secured at opposite ends to the cross-bars 8 and 12 of the auxiliary frame.

Pivotally attached at its opposite ends to the arms 7 is a rigid bail-likerod 15 provided with projections 16 which rest on the flange 5. Journaled at opposite ends in the side beams 3 is a transverse shaft 18 having a squared projecting end 19 adapted to receive a crank whereby the shaft m. be rotated. Secured at one end to the baif like rod 15 midway between opposite ends thereof is a rope 20 whose opposite ends is attached to, and adapted to wind upon, the shaft 18 when the latter is rotated in one direction, a ratchet wheel 21 being fixed on the end of the shaft 18 and engaged by a pawl 22'on the side beam 3 to prevent reverse rotation.

Pivoted to the arms 9 are rigid rods 25 which incline downwardly toward the foot of the bed and have lateral offsets 26 on their free ends which are adapted to engage the toothed bars 27 fixed to the underside of frame 5. Pivoted on theframe 5 as at 28 is a transverse rod 28 having integral arms 29 adapted to engage in ratchet notches 11 in the arms 11, these arms having lateral offsets similar to the offsets 26.

rejecting from one of the legs 1 of the head frame member 1 is a lug 30 on which is pivotally mounted to swing horizontally an arm 31 this arm having a longitudinal slot 32 therein through which extends a pin 33 carried by an extension 34 slidably mounted on the arm. This extension is provided with a suitable aperture to slidably receive a vertical post 35 having ratchet teeth 36 on one side thereof, these teeth being engaged by a pawl 37 pivoted on the extension 34 whereby the post 1s supported. Pivoted on the upper end of this post 35 to swing horizontally is another arm 38 upon which is slidably supported a small table 39, the arm engaging in angular guides 40 on the bottom of the table and being longitudinally slotted as at 41 and the table having a pin 42 projecting tion with the seats 48 under the bed and out of the way or to a position extending parallel' to the cross-bar 45 with the seats projecting laterally beyond the bed, the outer ends of the arms in this latter position projec'ting over rigid fingers 49 on the under sides of the side beams 3 whereby the arms,

and the seats are solidly supported.

It isbelieved that the manner of use of the table'and seats willbe apparent from the above description. I will therefore now describe only the method of use and adjust- V 'ment of the auxiliary spring carrying frame.

As previously set' forth all the members comprising this frame normally rest within the frame 5 and are'supported by the flange 5, in which position the arms' 26 and the side arms of the rods15 and 28 extend at acutelangles to the arms to which they are pivotally attached. 7 v
