Specification forming pari of Letters Patent No. 137,312, dated April 1, 1873; application filed March 5, 1871. i
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN W. MEREIAM, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Shin gling-Brackets, of which the following is a specication:
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a bracket to be used upon the roofs of houses during the process of shinglin g, and which bracket may be quickly applied without the use of nails or screws, and as readily detached when its service is no longer of use. It is also necessary that the fastening by which the said bracket is connected to the roof shall be of such a nature that perfect safety to the user shall be secured.
Description of the Accompany/ng Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bracket, in which A is the main body or web of the bracket, having dat projecting flanges B C on its top and vertical sides, the combined use of which, in combination with the expanded foot D D, is to prevent the bracket from rocking and falling over upon its sides. Fig. 2 is a detached view, showing the manner in which the ears engage with the shingle.
The expanded foot D D is constructed with a slightly-sharpened knife-edge, so that it may be pressed more or less into the roof of the building by means of the weight which is brought upon the bracket while in use, and, in connection with a device upon the upper end of the bracket, (which will be hereafter described,) constitutes the means by which the bracket and scaiolding are held t0 the roof.
The web A has cast upon its upper end four ears or lugs, E E' and F F'. Two of these ears, E' F', being upon the back side of the web A, are represented in dotted lines inFig. 1, and two of the ears, viz., those marked F F', both of which are also represented in dotted lines, are situated below the shingles G G.
The method of attaching the bracket to the roof consists in sliding the ears or lugs F F' up under the shingles G G, when it will be found that pressure upon the surface B will cause the ears E E' to press downward, and the ears F F' to press upward, producing upon the shingle G G a leverage cramp, which, in combination with the wedging form of the shingle, gives a very secure fastening. The lugs or ears E E' and F F', in combination with the shingles G G and the expanded foot D D, therefore constitute the mechanism by which the bracket is secured to the roof. The lugs E E and F F', in combination with the shingles G G, constitute a strong and sufficient fastening without the use of the knife-edged expanded foot D D, which foot might be con structed in various other forms.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A rooting-bracket having ears or lugs E E' and F F' and suitable feet D D, all substantially as described.
