FARM-GATE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 19.21.
Application ined June 15, 1920. sei-iai No. 389,203.
To all Aw tem .it may concern Be it known that I, Jol-IN T. LYNN, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot the city oil Seattle, county of King, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm- Gate Constructions, or' which the following' is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in farm gates and more particularly to ornamental structures wherein gates may be mounted, with mechanism for opening and closing the same, and which include means whereby plates for the display of advertising matter may be conspicuously shown.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a gate structure which will be ornamental and attractive and which includes an over-head structure wherein plates for the display of advertising matter may be mounted, and from which said plates may be removed when it is desired to change the advertising' matter thereon.
In accomplishing this and other objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details ot' construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of a gate constructed embodying' the present invention.
Fig'. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the means for holding the advertising plates in functional position in the overhead structure.
Referring more in detail to the drawings- 1 and 2 designate tubular posts which may be erected at opposite sides of a driveway or road, and which are here shown fixed to and extend vertically from foundation blocks 3 and 4.
Revolubly mounted in bearing collars 5, 6 and 7, that are ixed at spaced intervals to the post 1, is a shaft 8, and fixed rigidly thereto is a gate 9 which is adapted to be swung by said shaft to and from closed position, and at its swinging end has a latch hook 10 thereon which cooperates with a pivotally mounted latch hook 11 in the post 2, to hold the gate in closed position.
At the top o the shaft 8 is a bevel gear wheel 12 which operates in mesh with a gear 13 on a shaft 14 that is mounted transversely between the posts 1 and 2 and terminates within the upper end of the post 2 where it has a cross arm 15 fixed thereto and extending at both sides of the post.
Attached to the outer ends oi this cross arm are cables 1b' and 17 which extend downwardly within the post 2 and .lead in opposite directions from its lower end to posts 18 and 17 which may be located at some distance' from the gate and which are provided wlth openings 20 whereiirom the ends of the cables may extend. 1With this construction, a party approaching the gate from either direction may open the same by drawing on the cable end.- which will rock the arm 15 and shaft 14, to revolve the shaft 8 and swing the gate in the direction opposite that from which he is entering'. and after passing the gate he may close the same by drawing' outwardly on the cable end at that side of the gate.
Means may be provided on the cables.
such as the knots at 22, for releasing the lattch when a cable is drawn to swing the ga e.
Extending between the upper ends ot' the posts 1 and 2 is a frame work 25 comprising two vertically spaced rails 2G and 27, which are fixed at their opposite ends to the posts 1 and 2, and are slightly arched for the decorative effect. Between these rails are two vertical beams, 28 and 29, which divide the frame into a central panel 30 and opposite end panels 31 and 32.
.It is preferred to fill the central panel with a woven wire grille, whereon letters or a name plate 33 may be arranged to designate the name or' the farm and its owner, and fitted into the space between the gate posts and the beams 28 and 29, are plates 34; and 35, whereon advertisingl matter may be shown.
rlhese plates may be removably locked in position by any suitable means, preferably by providing` the plates at their corners with slots, as shown at 40, which will receive the heads of pins 41 extended from the frame members, as shown in Fig. 3.
It is apparent that a gate so constructed will be attractive in appearance and the advertising matter on the plates will be readily seen.
It is further apparent that the plates can be removed and new advertising matter placed thereon whenever it is desired, or a number of plates may be provided to fit these panels and may be used interchangeably, as the owner desires.
What I claim as new and desire to secure paneled openings at opposite sides of said by Letters Patent, is: supporting` means, pins iXed to said rails. A gate structure comprisinga pair of and advertising' plates having` openings spaced apart, vertical posts, between which therein for receiving` said pins to removablv 5 a gate may be mounted to swing, two versupport said plates in said paneled open- 15 tioally spaced Lapart rails joining the posts ings. at their upper ends, supporting means xed Signed at Seattle, RishinlgtonA` this 8th to and extendingbetween the rails along dav of June, 1920. their central portions Whereto a naine plate 10 or the like may be fixed and providing JOHN T.
