IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS@` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,294, dated April 1, 1873; application filed January 11, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, E. CaooKETT, of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented an Improved Gin-Gear or Horse- Power for driving cotton-gins and other may chines; Vand I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side elevation, partly in section, of the improved gin-gear or power, Fig. 2, a top view of the same 5 Fig. 3, view of a partdetached.

My invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of the gin-gear, as hereinafter specified.
A xed post or stationary shaft, A, extending from the floor or foundation B to the timber or gin-house door C above, and being secured in bearing-plates a and b,respectively at the lower and upper ends thereof, forms at once the support ofthe power or gear andthe axis around which it turns. First, around this shaft or axis revolves, as a bearing, a tubular shaft, D, called the king-post,77 resting at its lower end on anti-friction balls c c, which roll in annular grooves, respectively, in the lower surface of the expanded end or foot of the hollow shaft, and in the bearing-plate a or a supporting-block, e, on the shaft A. I o the upper end of this hollow shaft is secured the large driving-wheel E, constructed and attached thereto substantiallyas follows: Ahubplate, is bolted or otherwise secured to the upper end of the hollow shaftD, and the spokes or arms h h of the wheel are held in radial sockets it in the top of the hub-plate, to which they are fastened by screw-bolts l Z. rEhe outer ends of the spokes are connected by segmental pieces or fellies m m, which complete the periphery of the wheel. Upon the upper edge or surface of the peripheral segments m m segments n n of coggearin g are secured so as to make a complete gear-wheel of large diameter to gear into a pinion, G, on the shaft H of the driving pulley I. The shaft H is mounted in two bearings, op, on an arm, L, which is attached rigidly to and is supported by the stationary shaft or post A. To give rmness and strength to this arm a branch rod or arm, r, extends from the outer end thereof, in an inclined direction, to the post, and is affixed thereto. Both the arm L and its brace r are attached by screws or otherwise adjustably to the post. The pinion G is thus held in a stationary position, and as the driving-wheel E turns it is caused to revolve rapidly with its shaft H, and consequently the pulley I thereon receives a correspondin gly rapid motion. The pulley I is constructed similarly to the wheel E, with spokes or arms s s fitted into sockets of and bolted to a hubplate, t, which is bolted to a ange, u, on the shaft H. The periphery ofthe pulley is secured to the outer ends of the spokes or arms s s. A bearing, M, aixed to any suitable support may receive the outer end of the pulleyshaft H, to steady the same.
The horses are hitched to sweeps or levers N N, secured to the hollow shaft l) at the proper height by bolts and flanges, substantially as represented.
Most of the gear is of iron, except the spokes and peripheral segments of the driving-wheel `E and pulley I and the driving-arms N N.
This gear is exceedingly simple, easy, and cheap of construction, strong and durable, and not liable to getout of order or repair.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A horse-power composed essentially of a stationary shaft or post, A, tubular shaft D supported on anti-friction balls c c, drivingwheel E, pulley I, and bearing-arm L, all arranged substantially as herein specified.
2. The arm L provided with the bearings o j) and brace r, or its equivalent, arranged in combination with the stationary shaft A, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
