To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns Kinnra'rmon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Block-Printing Machines, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in block printing machines adapted for printing fabrics such as floor cloth, oil cloth and the like, and it comprises more particularly improved means for controlling the operations of the printing blocks in order to-hold them out of action and releasing them for action so that several blocks can be operatedv in a desired cycle or relation, as in printing so called rug designs for instance.
The characteristic features of the invention are fully set forth in the following description taken with the accompanying drawings illustrating a form of the improved mechanism.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of a printing machine equipped with my improvements, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of detached elements of the machine, Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken side elevation of elements shown in Fig. 1 in different relations, and Fig. 4 is a broken sectional elevation of details of the construction. The mechanism illustrated comprises the frame 1 provided with the vertical guides 2 for the slide bars 3 which carry the heads f having the printing blocks 5 fixed thereto. Cams 6 and 7, fixed on the respective transverse shafts S journaled in the frame, act through rollers 9 on the bars 3 to operate them together with the heads and blocks carried thereby. The shafts 8 are operated together in any convenient manner as by providing them with the beveled gears 10 and driving these gears through the beveled gears 11 fixed on journaled shafts 12. the shafts 12 being provided with spur gears 13 driven by spur gears 14: on a journaled longitudinal shaft 15.
Connected inking mechanisms 16 are movable to and fro on the frame, under the blocks 5. to ink them, and clear thereof, to permit them to descend in the printing operation upon a fabric carried by the bands 17.

The foregoing mechanism, of usual construction, has, in accordance with my invention, arms 22 fixed on the respective shafts 19 and provided with rollers 23 which are held in engagement by the parts 21 with cam wheels comprising disks 2% provided with the under cut circular grooves 25 and cams Q6 detachably connected with the disks in symmetrical relation by the bolts 27 having their heads engaged in the slot. These cams 26 will be varied in character in accordance with the functions to be performed, so as to secure the desired relation between the dips alternating with the lock-ups and obtain the desired-operations of the respective heads in the desired relation. The disks 24 are fixed on shafts 28 journaled in the frame transversely thereof and revolved by the beveled gears 29 fixed thereon, these gears being driven together by beveled gears 30 on a journaled shaft 31 extending longitudinally of the frame.
it will be understood from the foregoing description that the improved mechanism, applicable to machines of various types, can be adjusted readily, by changing the cams to control the actions of the respective heads with the blocks thereon so that they will operate in any desired relation in order to effect the desired impressions necessary for printing different designs.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a block printing machine. the combination with a plurality of reciprocatory printing mechanisms comprising heads provided with printing blocks, of locking mechanisms for holding said printing mechanisms out of action and means for operating said locking mechanisms, said means comprising journaled shafts provided with arms for rocking them, journaled shafts parallel to said shafts first named, means for revolving said shafts second named together, and adjustable cams on said shafts second named and adapted to act on said arms in predetermined relation through predetermined periods. 7

In a block printing machine, the combination with vertically reciprocatory slide bars provided with printing heads and ooacting rotary cams for simultaneously elevating said bars With the heads thereon, of means for engaging said bars to hold said heads in elevated positions in predetermined relation, said means comprising rock shafts corresponding to the respective printing heads, latching devices on said shafts for engaging said bars to hold said heads in elevated positions, arms on said shafts, rotary 10 devices having axes parallel, to said shafts and provided with changeable cams adapted to act through the respective arms and operate said latching devices periodically in predetermined relations, a journaled shaft transverse to said shafts first named, and means whereby said journaled shaft revolves said rotary devices.
