IMPROVEMENT IN CAR- BRAKES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 137,264, dated March 25, 1873.

Be ib known that I, ISAAG H. VOORHIES, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and. State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefu1 lrnprovements in Oar-Brakes; am]. I d0 hereby deelare that the following is a full, olea-r, and exact; description thereof, reference being had to the aceompanying draw ing and t0 the letters of referenee marked -thereon which for1n a part of this specification.

'1he nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of devices for operating n car-brake, whieh acts 011 the axle of the car, anal is so arranged that it can be operated by the engineer for the whole train or by one man or boy 0n a single car, the power being taken fro1n the a-xle 0f the engine 01 0f each car.

Power is applied t0 Ehe brakes by passing a cha-in, b, from the brake-lever B down the axle D of the ear, and once or twice or half a-round the axle, as may be found most desirable, am]. then up t0 a grooved pulley, E. Thema t0 the center of the -car and fastens t0 ashafls, G, which is placed directly across the center of the ca-r and under the bodyof the s2une. By turning the brake-wheel und rod J, th chain or cord d beeornes suffieientlytightened t0 cause the drive-axle I 130 turn. the sl1aft G, Whieh in turn, through the chain b, acts 011 ehe brake-Iever B 130 app1y the brakes, and the spring 00 yields t0 prevent breakage, and when the brakes are let'off winds up the cord. The chains when they wem 0n the axle are made, as shown in Fig. 3, with fiat links ffriveted toge ther, and wear-irons h h dovetailed in across eaeh link. The shafb G has a whee], H, ab each end, so as t0 pass the cord d 011 either side'in case 0f ehanging ends with the ear.

Having thus fully described my invention, whab I claim as new, rund desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The arrange1nent substantially as herein described, 0f the chain b, pulley E, and center shaft G, for operating the brake-lever, as herein sei: forth.

2. The arrangement 0f the drive-axle I, eord d, pulley e on the brake-wheel, 2Hld r0d J, and the pulley I-I 0n the center-shaft; G f0r turning said shaft, substantially as shown and deseribed; y

3. The wear-irons h h dovetailed into the linksffof i:l1e chain where'said chain passes around the axle, substantially as herein Set forth.
