Description

D. D. ROBERTS.
STUMP EXTRACTOR.
APPLICAT'ION man MAY 13. 1920 1,372,551, Patented Mar. 22, 1921.

. DREW n nonnn'rs, or rnnamrnonrna.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Draw D. Ronnnrs, a
citizen of the United States, "residing at Perry, in the county of Taylor and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for extracting-stumps, and pertains especially to mechanism for operating an elevating screw or worm connected with a stump.
The object of the invention is to provide a supporting frame, adapted to be anchored around a stump, with a plurality of gears or pinions meshing with an annular gear of a hollow cone-shaped head through which a screw shaft works for pulling stumps.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hollow cone having a screw head for operating a screw shaft, and having an annular gear meshing with a plurality of pinions, one of which is driven for revolving the cone and the other pinions, in a stump pulling operation.
Various other objects, advantages and improved results are attainable in the manufacture and practical application of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Figure 1 is an-elevation showing the a plication of the invention as in a stump pu ling operation.
ig. 2 is a top view with the cone partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the cone head showing the screw or lifting shaft in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the cone head. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a supporting frame comprising uprights 1 braced and joined together by frame members 2 so as to leave a central opening 3, and
the lower end of the uprights 1 are connected by braces 4:, affording a substantial rigid frame with said uprights depending from each corner of said frame. Each of the uprights 1 has joined therewith an adjustable ground leg 5 which may be adjusted to span stumps or other articlesto be lifted according to the size thereof.

p an e me a? 13, L W-fin l in; .3 t 1 Upon each corner ofthe said supporting frame-1ssecured journal bearings 6 for pin- ,ions 57 which have their axisline of rotation central of theframe opening. 3, and one of the p'lnionsis operated by a pulley 8 and belt driven by any convenient and suitable driving power. I
A hollow cone-shaped head 10 is revolubly mounted above the pinions 7 by means of a bearing ring 11 connected with the supporting frame by bars 12, and the bottom of said head is provided with an annular flange 12, having an annular gear 13 which meshes with the pinions. The top of the cone head has a screw socket or collar 14 through which a lifting screw shaft 15 is worked vertically by the revolution of the cone head in a stump extracting operation. The lower end of the shaft 15 has swiveled thereto suitable grapples 16 for grasping a stump, and the ground end of the legs 5 has base pieces 17 or other suitable means for anchoring them.
Attention is specially directed to the advantages of the cone-shaped head 10, in that its hollow cone-shaped construction with unusual length or height affords strengthening and bracing means between the supporting structure and the apex of the cone and between the latter and the screw shaft, and also affords increased length of hoist or vertical movement of said shaft without adjusting the supporting structure, while the latter may be adjusted vertically with respect to a stump without detaching or separately adjusting the cone-head.
Obviously the shaft is raised by revolving the cone head, and said shaft is lowered into osition for stump pulling by merely reversing the movement of the cone head. The grapple connection is such as to permit of having the grapple hook to stump roots, and to a cable or chain secured to a stump for purposes of extraction.
Referring to the modification. shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the head of the cone 18 has a socket 19 for holding a nut 20 as i partsthereof, and in the manufacture and practical application thereof as may come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is In a stump extractor, a hollow cone-shaped head the apex of which has formed therein a screw-threaded collar, the flaring open end of said cone having an annular bracing flange member'provided'upon its under side with an annular gear, a supporting structure for said cone, an annular bearing ring fitting the said flange and attached to the DREW D. ROBERTS.
