ROLL-FILM-DEVELOPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed April 1, 1919. Serial No. 286,708.
1 0 aZZ w item it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC R. GnUsKIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Kittanning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roll-Film-Developing Devices, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for supporting photographic roll films in the developing or fixing solution. The object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which will carry or support the film as an entirety without danger of portions thereof contacting or contacting with other objects, thus avoiding the liability of blurring.
Another object is to support the film in a solution so that it is uniformly acted upon by the solution and when removed therefrom and washed, still remaining in the supporting frame, may be set aside and dried on said frame, so that the entire operation is performed and the film developed fully before it becomes necessary to touch the same with the hands.
Heretofore, so far as I am aware, roll film developing has been accomplished by grasping the ends with the hands and slowly passing it through and subjecting the same to the action of the developing or fixing solution. During this operation, however long or short it may have been, the ends of the film were held by the operator and there was no certainty that all portions of the film was uniformly subjected to this solution and for the same period of time; whereas, in the use of my device the film as an entirety is supported upon the frame and securely fastened thereon inv such wise that the solution is adapted to act upon every part thereof. ll hen the film has been sufficiently treated in the solution, the frame with said film is re moved from said solution, the film is washed, still remaining on the frame, and the frame containing the film is placed in any suitable position to enable the film to dry.
I accomplish the purpose of this invention by means of the apparatus hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part here of in which Figure l is a plan view of the supporting frame and solution pan.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the solution pan omitted.
Fig. 3 is asection on line 83 of Fig. 1, solution pan omitted.
Fig. 4 is a section solution pan omitted.
Figs. 5 and G are enlarged details of the locking device for plate 7.
Fig. 7 is a section on lines 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is an open outer oblong frame within which the open frames 2 and 3 and the supporting plate lare rotatably mounted upon a shaft 5, the ends of which shaft are suitably supported in the sides of said frame 1. The said frames are of varying width and depth and are centrally mounted on said shaft 5 so that the sides and ends of each frame is in different horizontal and vertical planes throughout their entire length and width, so as to enable the film X to be wound upon said frames without any portion thereof contacting or touching. The film is mounted in the frame by passing the inner end thereof over the rod, 6, the ends of which respectively terminate in hooks, g, h, which are journaled in the sides of the plate, 1, and by turning said rod downwardly upon said plate firmly secure the end of said film between the rod and the plate, as shown in Fig. 2; the other and opposite end of the film, after passing over the ends of frames 3 and 2, is finally secured between the edge of the detachable plate, 7, andone member of the link, 8. The plate, 7, which is mounted on and is carried by one member of the link, 9, is then positioned to hold the film taut upon the frames, as shown. in Fig. 1. by inserting the hook, (1 formed on one of the separable ends of the said link, 9, in one of the orifices. h, formed in the flange, 0, along the edge of the frame, 1, the other free end of said link 9 engaging under the flange on said frame, being provided with means for this purpose. as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, whereby the plate, 7, and the link, 8, are supported over, above and out of contact with the film. The said link, 9, and plate 7 are adapted to be adjnstably positioned at any point along said frame, dependent upon the length of the film, and the point at which the free end of said film terminates. A coil spring; 1.0. mounted on the shaft. 5, between the inner edge of frame, 3, and the adjacent edge of plate, 4, serves, in coniunction with the 011 line ti of Fig. 1,
blade spring, 10, mounted on the opposite.
end of the shaft, to hold the said plate and frame, 3, against too free movement in any direction, one end of the blade spring, 10,
' terminating in a hook, a, one end of which 7 length mounted on one end of the shaft, 5,
one end of said blade spring, 11, terminat ing in a loop portion, the free end of Which is adapted to engage under a hook, d, projecting from the inner side of the frame, 1 which serves to hold frames 1 and 2 in locked position. The tension of springs 12 and 12', mounted on one end of the shaft, 5, between the sides of frames 3 and 2 and 2 and 1, respectively, also serve to hold said frames, 1, 2 and 3, against too free movement. Spring, 13, mounted on the opposite end of the shaft to said springs, 12 and 12, also serves to accomplish this function.
It is to be noted that the frames are made of suitable material impervious to the action of the fixing solution and is perforated around the sides and edge thereof so as to enable the solution to permeate every part of the film supported on said frame.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcm; is: V
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of open frames of varying length and width, arranged one within the other, mounted upon a common shaft and adapted to be rotated thereon, the sides and ends of said frames occupying different horizontal and vertical planes, means to grasp one end of the film and means adjustable to secure and'hold the free end of said film.
2. A device of the character described, comprising an open stationary frame, a plurality of open frames rotatably mounted on a shaft within first mentioned frame, all of said frames being adapted to be independently rotated on said shaft, means to hold said rotatable frames rigid within said first mentioned frame, means to fasten one end of the photographic film and adjustable means to fasten the opposite end of said film.
3. A device of the character described, comprising an open, stationary frame, a plurality of open frames, mounted on a shaft within said first mentioned frame, all of said frames being adapted to be independently rotated on said shaft. means to hold said rotatable frames respectively stationary within said first mentioned frame. means to fasten one end of a photographic film, and detachable adjustable means to fasten and position the opposite end of said film.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
