Description

Q J. A. DE CEW.
COOK TANK.
APPLICATION FILED APR-26, i920,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUDSON A. I): CEW, OF NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOB TO PROCESS ENGINEERS, INCOR POBATED, OINEW 'ZOBK,N. Y., A. CORPORATION 01 NEW YORK.
' coox-rm.
Application aieaa rn as.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jonson A. DE (law, a citizen of the Dominion-of Canada, resid-' ing at New York in the county offld'ew York and State of lQ'ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Cook-Tanks, of whichthe following'is specification.
V This invention relates to size and soap making, and more particularly to the cookers or cook tanks used therein.
By the use of my invention I am able to cook the rosin and alkali in a much more eflicient manner than has hitherto been (1011? In the drawings, which are to betakfen as illustrative of onemanner in which my invention may be practised, and in no wise a limiting sense;
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a cook tank provided witha preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective of Fig. 1 having cut away portions to expose the parts,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a deflector,
Referring now by reference characters to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cooker or cook tank of ordinary construction provided with a steam chamber or coil 2 which may be supported upon lugs 3 in the Volcanically shaped deflecting member 4 (which perhaps had better be called in the form of a truncated cone) is adapted to be removably inserted in the cook tank and spaced apart from the bottom of the tank as by means of pins 5 attached to the lower portion of deflectorpr member 4 and socketed into recesses 6. Ohviously, other forms of support may be provided and yet obtain the desired result.
In operation, the size making materials are placed in the tank and the steam turned into the coils. The heated liquid rises Specification of-Letters Patent. Patented Mal 22, 1921.
1920. Serial Io. 376,662.
through outlet a owing to expansion and is displaced by the cooler liquid at b. The
restricted outletlat' a for the hotter liquid" and the tapering inlet for cooler liquid I) tend to increase the speed of the two cur: rents. By this action a thorough and complete agitation and circulation results, and a column of heated material erupts or bub bles above the level of the material in the tank which is like a volcanic eruption. ,The circulation of the size prevents it from getting thick and viscous around the coils whereby more size is heated in a given time with the same amount of heating surface. It will be readily apparent that by the use of this deflector, currents of heated and cooler material are kept separate and no interfering eddy currents are produced. Also the currents of liquid are separated, and owing to the-restricting walls surroundin the currents, an increase in their speed 0? travel is produced, resultin in ebullitiqn and "increased efliciency o the apparatus.
This'invention is equallyapplicable to the soap making industry and the efficiency of the tank makes it possible to cook the soap "in-a much shorter time than is ordinarily uired. hat I claim is:
1. In a cook tank, a steam member and a deflector of frusto-conical shape standing on its base directly over the steam member andkspaced from-the steam member and "the tan 2. In a cook tank, a steam member adjacent the bottom of the tank, a deflector substantially frusto-conical in shape, and means for removably spacing the deflector from the steam member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
