Description

H. W. MCCULLOCH.
BRAKE BAND.
APPLxcATIoN FILED SEPT. 15,- |919,
@amm Mm. 159 w21.
. of my invention` The' tivo sectional hand ineinhers lil toY which the lugs are attached in the inanncr described, and the niaiii sectional inenilicr 20 to which thefty are united in a manner next to be described9 together :torni theperiplieral twain-i hand oit the preferred torni The intiin section 20, as already pointed out, lies been designed to e: nd circui'nlier tizillv to cover sligjlitly more than one halt the druni periphery 3u te which it :ipplies so that it may he sprung on and ofi the liodjv oil the drum iv 1th greater ittici Qin Y in the forni illustrated in the drawings tt.; hand sections l() ere 'united to the inaiii section by means of the hooi; sind screw ierices already described whereby the lugs 2 ind 3 are etteclied to the iirst mentioned sections, und to this end the said sections it) nd lile conitoriniiiir to the curvature oit the druin to which `iiie hand appliesg ere offset at their medial transverse line to the extent ot the thickness of the nicht-section 20, the portion oi the smaller diei'neter containing ofhoolr 4 and the threaded orifice for 'receiving' the screw t5, sin'iiiiiij tothe devices by ineens oit which the' lugs 2 and 3 are attiiclied es described.
Accordingly upon the respective ends ot.
the n'iemlier 20 are provided the siinilitrly disposed outwardly projecting liooircd catches 4: 'adepte to enter the slotted open ings 5 which are in the portion ot the larger diameter ot the respective section l() and the screws ti and ineke permanent the connections between the band sections substitutially in the saine iminue f as' that described for securing` the lugs to the first mentioned hand sections.
While l have desiV the tentures :illustrate ot the ineens ior uniting' bond sections, as iilso'ii'eigfi d ing ineens lietiveen sections oi the, hand proper, it is however not desired to liinit niy i1'i-,'e;ution to the particular means 'thus .-riecit'iciilly desci'ihed. ill improvement is designed hrozifillnv provide ii sectional hand .hat'i'iossesses :ill the advantages oil a single liiudfliut liavinrr ineens tor disconnecting its parte :is occasion arises.
iii on'iiiloying .niv improved bend it nur v "oe zisseiiililerfl completely as shown in Figs. l. and "Za and applied to the drum in the ril'ied s oniei'vhiit fully :is iiire'l'erreii 'forni the lugs to the 'le the eminent- Lerner? snel manner and if ani7 section becomes Worn or injured it will be replaced by tali- :ing out the screws 6 and unliooking the parts affected, replacing the section to he restored.
But it it he t'ound necessarir to place the band upon ii druin partially inclosed in :i casing, such as the Ford transmission case iis hereinabove referred to-r the parts would ,lie disconnected prepi'iratory to their insertion and the section Q() ivith the full strip oi lining riveted thereto is inserted longitudinally through the smaller openingat the top of the easing; and in this manner forced around the di'uin until the forward end1 of the lining' appears at the upper surface ot the drurn.
The usual brake lining is securely riveted midway oi its length to the sectional ineinber 2() as it hes been found necessary only to secure to the respective sections l() the entreine ends et the linin. Hence, in proneeding` ivith 'the inserting' ot the hand through the narrow openingF :is above the' section l0 before having' the lug attached thereto is then attached to the end ot the bend section 2O hy *having the hook 4 thereon passed through the squaro`opening 5 and completing the union by inserting the screw 6. Thereupon the second section is added in like' manner, the bend being properly shifted longitudinally upon the drum successively to expose the unconnected portions in the order required as indicated.
After the sections l() and 2O have been articulated the lugs 2 and 3 are thereupon attached one after the other in practically the same manner as the sections l() were put on the main baud section, and then the re-f tivo minor sections dctachably connected to ends oi' the major section and forming therewith substantially continuous inner hearingr surface, operating` lugs detachebly chrried by the man); section, and detachable ineens for securing' the tree ends of? the liningr to the tree ends ot the minor sections.
3. A iii-alte hand having a inajor section, tvvo minor sections detachably connected to the ends ol the major-section, operating lugs detiichahly secured to the t'ree ends of the minor seirrtioi'is, e lining element carried hy thefinajor section7 and detachable means tor 'tions Whose ends overlap and means for se# A' curing sind overlapplng ends together, said' means comprising a hook in one of 'said sections anda slotted opening 1n the over;
. lapping end of the other of said sections,
5. A brake band having articulated sections whose ends .overlap'and means for se; curing' said overlapping ends together, said means comprising a hook in one of said sec-'- tions, a slotted oipening'-in the overl'aqiping.
end of the other ofsaid seetions,:and screws securing said overlapping parts together.
6. fA brake band adapted cov be used on a drum, Said band having.readilyseparable steel band sections, an inner lining of suitl of said sections and detaehably securedat its ends to .two of said. sections. 1
In testimony whereof have' hereunto Sset myhand. f
