Application filed October 19. 1920. Serial No. 416,356.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR P. HORN, a citizen of the Unit-ed States` residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifeboats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel construction 0f life boats, the principal object of the invention being to provide means for propelling the boat by manually operated means which are arranged to drive the propeller of the boat.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for rotating the propeller at different speeds.
A further object of the invention is to provide a number of hand levers which are pivoted to the boat and are adapted to be worked back and forth, with means for converting this movement of the levers to a rotary movement of the propeller shaft.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and lin the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a boat'constructed in accordance with myinvention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3 3 of rig. i.
plan view of the recipvided with a grooved collar 5 in the groove o of which engages the forked end' of a hand lever 6 which is pivotally connected with a stationary part. By rocking this hand lever each beveled gear vcan bemoved into active or inactive position on the propeller shaft; A shaft 7 is arranged crosswise of the boat and this shaft carries a largegear 8 which is provided'with three rows of beveled teeth which are adapted to be engaged` bythe beveled gears 5 on the propeller. shaft. The rows of teeth are spaced apart so as to permit the beveled gears to be moved into and out of engagement with the teeth. As will be understood7 one of the beveled gears is adapted to be moved into and out of engagementV with the outer row of teeth, the next gear with the middle row of teeth and the third gear with the inner row so Vthat the propeller shaft can be driven at three different speeds or; it can be entirely disconnected from the large gear wheel.
A reciprocating member 9 is movably supported in the uprights 10. This member is formed of two bars 9 which are bolted together n spaced relation and this member is'pivotally connected at one end to an arm 11 which has its other end pivotally connected with the wheel 8 by the pin 12 so that the reciprocating movement of the member 9 will act to rotate the wheel S.V Boxings 13 are pivotally mounted between the bars 9 of the member 9 and theactuating levers 14,
which are pivoted at thel lower ends to the bottom of the boat, pass through said boxings. The upper ends of the actuating levers are provided with the handles 15, so that the said levers may be rocked back and forth by hand. This movement 0f the levers acting on the member 9 through the boxings 13 will reciprocate said member andr the reciprocation of this member will rotate the wheel 8 so that b v moving the desired gear 5 in engagement with its row of teeth on the wheel 8 the propeller shaft will be rotated at the desired speed.
While I have shown means for driving the propeller shaft at three speeds with two actuating levers, it will of course be understood that any desired number of gears and actuating levers may be used.
It is thought from the kforegoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I `may make changes in the construction and inthe combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Wthin the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In combination with a boat and its prof' peller shaft, a second shaft arranged transversely in the boat, gears Connecting the shafts together, uprghts in the boat, a reoproeatng frame supported by said up-V rghts, hoxings located in said frame, actuating, levers passing through said hoxngs and having their lower ends pvoted to the bottom of the boat, handles on the upper ends of said levers and means for connectw ng one end of said frame with the gear on the transversely arranged shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
