FRIEDRICH BRENNER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIOa IMPROVEMENT |N APPARATUS Fon PITcHlNe cAsKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. JS, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH BRENNER, ot' Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvenient in Machines for Pitching Beer- Casks, of which the following is a specification :v
Nature and Objects of Invention.
My invention relates to the class of machines which are designed to be used to rotate beercasks while they are under the operation of pitching77 interiorly, and consists of a combination of devices by which the cask, after being supplied with the necessary amount of pitch, is not only rotated continuously7 but is moved laterally with a rocking motion.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of a beer-pitching machine embodying my invention.
General Description.
A is the frame of the machine, made in any preferred way, and provided with journalbearings B B 011 both sides of the machine, for the reception of the rollers C. The rollers C, which may be made of any length, and supported at any number of points in its length, are loosely journaled in the bearings B, and forcibly rotated by gear-wheels D, connecting` with or meshing into the driving-wheel E. I prefer, in the construction ot' this machine, to use three lines of rollers, as indicated by the three gear-wheels D, one line at the top of the machine, and one upon each side ot' the same. One or more of the rollers have screw-threads el upon their peripheries, as shown, which serve to carry the cask laterally in the operation of the machine. The roller or rollers on which there are no screw-threads may be plain faced. The'cask to be pitched is placed between any two of the rollers C, by which it is rotated, as the machine is put in motion. The screw-thread d, as the cask is rotated, acts to carry. it along laterally toward the side of the machine it is delivered upon, and in this double motion the cask is also tipped or rocked to and fro as the thread upon which it rests is moved to or from the center of gravity of the cask, and the pitch is by this treble motion distributed equally over the staves of the cask, the pitch, oil course, as is necessary, being heated or melted before it is put in. The rollers may be two in number only, or as many more as desired.
I do not propose to claim broadly the com bination ot' a series of revolving rollers, so constructed and arranged as to both roll and rock barrels placed upon any two of the series. The distinguishing feature of my invention is the screw-threads upon at least one ot' a pair of such rollers, to impart to the barrel or casi; an endwise as well as a rotating and rockin g motion.
Claim.
A beer-cash pitching-machine, having revolving rollers C on which the cash rests, oie or .more of the rollers having a screw-thread or threads, d, the whole being arranged and operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto setmy hand.`
FRIEDRICH BRENNER.
