IMPROVEMENT IN HARVEST'EES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 37 E62 dated March 25,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM M. YALE, of Goldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjust able pin-holder, to hold thepin in the eye of the sickle-bar of a reaper or mower, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of my invention.
A represents the finger-bar or rather a part of the finger-bar of a reaper or mower; and B is the eye of the sickle-bar running in a groove on the same, and through which apin, a, passes to secure the pitman O to the eye. D D represent two plates fastened to the finger-bar, each by means of a screw, 1), passing through a slot d, in the plate into the finger-bar, so that said plates may be adj usted to or from the eye B, as occasion may require. Between these two plates D D is placed another plate, E, provided with a flange, G, at the end nearest to the eye, which flange extends along the ends of the plates D D. The other ends of the three plates D D and E form tubes or pipes, through which a rod passes forming a hinge for the middle plate E, so that the same can be thrown up when desired to remove the pin a in the eye B. The pin a being inserted in the eye connecting the pitman to the same the plate E with the flange Gis thrown down and fastened between the plates D D by buttons h h, and the whole attachment is then adjusted by the screws 1) b, so that the flange G will be close enough "to the head of the pin a to prevent the same from coming out, but, of course, not interfere with the reciprocating movement of the eye.
In the old way of securing the pin there is great difficulty in removing the same when,
as often happens, it is necessary to remove the sickle-bar, requiring two wrenches and a considerable time. There are, however, different ways of securing the pin, but they are all more or less insecure and objectionable.
My invention secures the pin beyond any question, and the pin can be taken out and restored by the hand in a few seconds of time simply by turning the buttons h h and throwing the plate E with its flange upward.
When this device is applied to old machines setscrews m m are used to adjust the device more or less inclined, because of the bevel usual in the cutter-bar; but in the manufacture of new machines they may be dispensed with by the level surface of the cutter-bar, except that they may still be used for the purpose of adjusting the surface of the flange G, against which the head of the pin moves.
Though this device is specially intended for use on reapers or mowers, as above described, it may equally as well be used on any other machine to hold a coupling-pin or similar device in its place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The adjustable plates D, in combination with the hinged plate E, flange Gr, buttons h, and set-screws m, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own ,I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I HIRAM M. YALE.
Witnesses:
N. P. LOVERIDGE, H. H. BARLOW.
