Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, I have there illustrated-a machine embodying a stapling mechanism and acirc'ulating carrier for the box materials which is adaptedto move the latter beneath the stapling mechanism for operation of the latter thereon. Means are provided for halting the conveyer for holdingit stationary against the driving action of'this train while the staple is being driven. 7 Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 4, I have thereshown one suitable mechanism by which the conv'eyer chains 3 may be advanced through the. sheaves from the main shaft 15 .of the machine. The mechanism illustrated comprises a worm shaft 17 driven by the miter gears 19 from the 'main shaft 15, and transmitting motion through worm wheel 21 to friction disk 23 both of which members are on the sleeve 25 supported by and free to turn on the axle 27 of the sheave 5. Splined to the axle 27. is a friction disk 29 adapted to cooperate with the disk 23. If desired the disk 29 may be pressed against the disk 23 byfspring 31 the tension of which, in the embodiment shown, may be adjusted by means of a nut 33 threaded on axle 27 to vary the pressure on the disk 29. It is apparent that when the main drivipg shaft 15 of the machine is rtated power will ordinarily be transmitted through the frictional couple 23 -29 to r0- tate the sheaves 5 and so move the conveyer chain but that, if there is excessive resistance to movement of chains 3, the disk 29 will slip on disk 23 and the movement of the latter will be an idle movement not affecting the chains.
.- The worm-on shaft 17 cannot readily be i turned by the wheel and so the resistance to movement of the conveyer is not communicated to the shaft 15 in such a manner that v slippa e of the main driving belt might ooour. owever, I do not, wish to be limited to the particular form of train shown.
The motion transmitted to the conveyer chains 3 is of sufficient rapidity to move the latter through the maximum distance which it is desired to-have'between staples in the interval between successive reciprocations of the stapler head. Mean'sare prov ded to halt the conveyer chain when any desired length thereof-has moved beneath the. stapler head after the last operation of the lat- Y terand to hold the same until the next staple is driven. I will now describe, with referen'ce particularly to Figs. 2 and 3, one suitable mechanismfor accomplishing this purpose. I have in those figures shown catches 35 adapted to cooperate with adjustable holes 39 at suitable intervals into which the pins may be fitted. When a stop pin 37 is in contact with the catch 35 as shown' in Fig.
3 the chain which carries it is held against movement and the stapler head descending will drive the staple in the box ,material which is supported by the conveyer-chain immediately above or adjacent the point 1 where the stop pin 37 is placed.
The catches 35 may take the form of links 41 pivoted at one end to blocks 43 sustained on the frame of the machine and having abutments 45 adaptedto cooperate with the stop pins. The link 41 is normally depressed as by a suitable spring '47 so that the ab'ut-. ment 45 is presented in the path of the stop pins 37 on the conveyer chain 3. Means are provided correlated in action with the stapler head for tripping the catches in order to release the conveyer chains to permit a further feeding movement of the box material. In the present embodiment of the invention this means takes the form of latches 49 carried by the crosshead 9 to which they are pivoted, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The
.latch 49 is provided with a beveled end 51 bevel to permit the pin to enter the hook 53 wh1ch will swing into engagement with the .same when the latch again hangs down straight As the crosshead 9 rises the link will swing upwardly on its pivot against the force of spring 47 releas'ingstop pin 37 from the abutment 45. Cross bar 7 is pro- Vided with a guide 57' in which the latch 49 .runs and this guide is provided with a cam surface 59 adapted to cooperate with a pin 61 on the latch. After the latch in ascending has swung the catch clear of the stop pin the cam surface 59 of the guide will act on pin 61 to swing the latch once again to the left and thereby to disengage the hook portion of the same from the pin 55. The link 41 .will then drop aided by the action of spring 47 and'the abutment surface 45 will be in position to engage the next stop pin on the conveyer chain to halt the latter once again at the proper point for the driving of the next staple.
It will be apparent from the description given of one embodiment of the invention that I provide means whereby fastening devices such as staples can be accurately fastened in any desired special relation and at selected points on the work. The stop pins 37 may be adjusted along the length of the conveyer chains in the position in which it is desired to have the staples placed, using the blank as a guide if desired, and the chains 'will be halted when those points arrive beneath'the stapler head so that staples will be driven there. The spacing is entirely arbitrary and not only may the relation of staples on a single blank be varied but the distances between the blanks can be'readily cared for without causing a useless staple to be'formed and driven between blanks. Furthermorefthepositioning of the staple is controlled-directly from the materials them selves, that is, by pins on thework conveyer placed relatively to the materialswhichare being held and moved forward by the con; veyer, and not by a'p'rocess which-locates the staples of a' series by determining their dis- .tances from the first of that series. I In the latter method there is a possibility for accumulated errorand furthermore, when the machine moves from one blank to another it is necessary in practice to provide some means for bringing the mechanis back to a starting or zero point. This is provided for in the present machine automatically in the regular operation thereof. V
In machines of the general type shown in the drawing such as hitherto have been known there have beenyvarious factors con polygonal minimize the tributing to an inaccurate positioning of the staples. In order to reduce the number-of joints in the conveyer chain and thereby possibility of having to place spacing blocks for the cleats at such joints, the links of the chains have been made quite long and the sheaves 5 therefore of markedly polygonal form. The use of these sheaves has given an irregular drive to the chains since the effective crank arm thereof varies according asv to whether an apex or a side ofthepolygon is upper:-

It will be apparent from the above description of a single illustrative embodiment of my invention that I have provided a simple and efi'ectivemachine whereby fasteners may be driven into materials in any desired relative position. In explaining the machine shown in the drawings, I havedescribed the same in considerable detail and named specifically the different parts of the mechanism shown.' It will be understood, however, that I have done this in order that the structure and operation might be more readily understood and not becausethese matters of detail are essential to my.
invention, but that what I do claim'and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A box-blank machine. comprising in combination, cooperating blank-feeding and binding-wire applying mechanisms in a continuously-operating organization. for wiring" successive blanks; said blank-feeding means comprising continuously-driven means for yieldingly advancing the work; and automatic means, including a set of irregularly spaced members correlated with desired relative positions of the work and binding-wire applying mechanism for successively-stopping the movement of the work in such selected relative positions. .3.
