To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR E. Gnnvna citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented ce1'- tain new and useful improvements in Rotary Drilling-Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.A l
My invention relates to improvements in hydraulic drilling machines, particularly designed for use in drilling wells. Machincs of the class to which my invention relates include a rotatable centrally aperturcd table, means for rotating the table, a drivering mounted on and connected with the table, one or moreV bushings co-acting with the drive-ring, a sectional drill stein, and a grip or grief stem connecting the drill-stem and the rotary table through the bushing or bushings. These parts are arranged so that the grip or grief stem is allowed a longitudinal movement through the bushings during the operation of drilling and are of such a character as to permit the grip stem and the sectional drill-stem to be lowered and raised through the rotary.
Owing to the fact that the drill-stem is made up of sections secured together by threadedcouplings and the necessity for adding new sections as the well deepens, it will be understood that considerable time and labor arerequired in connecting and disconnecting the grip stein and the various sections composing the drill-stem.
S0 far as I am aware, rotary machines of the character to which the present invention relates, as` heretofore constructed, have been incapable of being utilized for joining or connecting the various sections.
One of the principal objects off the present invention is to provide a rotary drilling machine of simple and eiiicient construction that may be utilized. for joining the sections together las well as disconnecting the sections.
Other objects of the present invention are, to provide means for connecting and disconnecting pipet sections without rotating the sections in the hole below the rotary; new and improved bearings and lubricating means; means for preventing the rotary table from being accidentally raised from the bed-plate; means for preventing the entrance of mud, etc., to the movable parts of the machine; means for connecting and disconnecting tlie drive-ring and rotary table. In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an application of my invention,

Referring to the drawings, 2-2 designate suitable skids or supports for the bed plate orhbase 3, and d is a rotary table, the latter being provided with an annular rack 5 adapted to cooperate with drive-pinion G carried on drive-shaft 7.
The table, as illustrated and as preferred, hasa central opening 8 into which the driven ring is entered, said table being also nrovided with an annular depending portidn 9 which extends downwardlyy through au opening in the base 3. The lower end of depending portion 9 is threaded as shown at 1Q to engage a thrust ring 11, said thrust ring adapted to engage the under surface of the base 3, thereby preventing the table from working up through the base. rTable 4 is designed to revolve on a series of roller bearings 12, the latter being located in an annular raceway 13 formed in the base 3.
111 designates a drive-ring adapted to be positioned on the table and designed to be connected to and disconnected therefrom by means of a hdrizontally movable pin or plug element 15. Drive-ring 14 is mounted on bearings 16, the latter being disposed in a raceway 17 formed in the table.
The drive-ring 14.-, is formed with an interior tapered face 18, said tapered face or portionbeing designed to receive slips, the latter being designed to make engagement with the drill pipe for the purpose ofy suspending the pipe when desired. The drivering bushing 14 is also provided with an annular lower end formed withopenings 20. The purpose of said openings 20 is to receive a sliding bolt 21, the latter being mounted and operative in a casing 22 secured to the underside of the base 3 b means of bolts 23. Sliding bolt 21 is moved .by means of a handle 24, and casing 22 is provided with two recessed portions 25 and 26, the latter being adapted to receive and,

Located in the drive-ring 14 I have shown two bushings 27 and 28, the outer bushing 27 being designed during normal drilling operations to be connected with the table and with the drive-ring by means of the horizontally movable elements 15 and the bushing 28 to bushing 27 by a key 29. The bearings 12 and 16 are lubricated from an oil reservoir formed in the drivering, said reservoir communicating with said bearings by means of passages 86 and 37. 38 designates roller thrust bearings interposed between the bedj and the annular de ending portion 9 of the table.

The function of the post 40 is to engage pipe tongs, not shown, designed to be secured to a section of the drill-stem or to the grip stem above the rotary table, thus turning the section above the table by rotating the table.
In the operation of my machine the turning of the section or sections above the table either for the purpose of connecting the sections or for disconnecting the sections is.

During the drilling operations the drivering and 'bushings are designed to be driven by the rotary table, the connecting elements 15 being in the position shown by Fig. 1 and the element 21 beingwithdrawn from contact with the lower end of the drive-ring.
-Assuming the sectional drill stem and the grief or grip stern connecting the diill stem with the rotary are in position for drilling and it is desired to disconnect the sections,
the key 29 is removed, the string together with the grief stem is raised in the usual well known manner, the cou ling connecting the lower end of the grie and the upper section of the drill stem, or an element on the grief stem, coming into contact with the lower face of-the bushings 28, raises the bushings free of the drive-ring, thereupon slips are introduced for the purpose of susterior face of the bushings 27 land one of the slips a being provided with a lug b on back to enter a recess 42 of the said bushing 27, the slip a with the lug being formed with vertical serrations and the other slips c with horizontal serrations. Slips of the character described are shown inU. S. Patent No. 1,259,855 of March 19, 1918. :After the slips are positioned locking element 15 is moved llniy its pin 31 from the position shown by ig. 1, inwardly, thus .carrying said element'free of the table 4. For the purpose of preventing the rotation of the drive-ring, element 21 is moved into the dotted line position shown in Fig. l.
A break-out post or posts are then placed in position to contact with tongs placed on a section above the rotary and the table to-v gether with said post or posts revolved inl ployed bushing 27 may be omitted and a larger grip or grief 'stem engaging bushing, as 28, may be employed. l
What I claim is:
1. A rotary drilling machine comprising a base, a raceway in said base having bearings therein, a rotary table carried by said bearings, means for rotating. the table, a raceway on said table having bearings therein, a drive-ring carried by the bearings, means operable for locking the drive-ring and table in drivin relation, and means operable for holding t e drive-ring against rotation when it is desired to rotate only the table.

3. A rotary drilling machine comprising a base having a central opening, anti-friction rollers carried by said base, a table having a depending portion extending into the opening and rotatably mounted on said rollers, means for rotating the table, anti-friction rollers carried by the table, a drive-ring mounted on the rollers, means for locking the drive-ring in driving relationv with the table, means operable `for locking the drivering against rotation when it is desired to rotate only the table and a thrust member secured to the depen ing portion of said table and adapted to engage the said base whereby vertical movement of the table relative to the base is prevented.
4. A rotarydrilling machine comprising a base portion having an annular race-Way thereon provided with bearings, a rotary table carried by the base portion and supported by the bearings, a race-Way having bearings therein on said table, a drive-ring supported on rthe bearings in the table, an oil reservoir in the drive-ring, passages 'for conducting oil from the reservoir to the race- Way, means for rotating the table, means for imparting the rotation of the table to the drive-ring, and means for holding the drivering against rotation when it is desired to rotate only the table.
5. A rotary drilling machine comprising a stationary base portion, anti-friction bearings on the base portion, a rotary table mounted on the bearings, means for rotating 'the table, anti-friction bearings carried by the table, a drive-ring supported on the anti-friction bearings in the table, said antifriction bearings on the table permitting of .the relative rotation between the drive-ring and the table, means for locking the drivering and table against relative rotation whereby the drive-ring may be rotated with the table, and other means operable for holding said drive-ring against rotation When said locking means is inoperative and it is desired to rotate only the table.
6. A rotary drilling machine comprising a stationary base, anti-friction bearings on the base portion, a rotary table mounted on the bearings, means for rotating the table, anti-friction bearings carried by the table, a drive-ring supported by the anti-friction bearings on said table, said anti-friction bearings on the table permitting of relative rotation between the drive-ring and table, said table and drive-ring being provided with openings adapted to be brought into alinement, means slidable in the openings for locking the drive-ring and table against relative rotation whereby the drive-ring may be rotated with the table,.and other means operable for holding said drive-ring against rotation when said locking means is inoperative and it is desired to rotate only the table. A rotary drilling machine comprising a base portion, anti-friction bearings on said base portion, a rotary table carried by said bearings, means for rotating the table, antifriction bearings on the table, a kdrive-ring carried by the said anti-friction bearings on the table, a removable bushing in said drivering, a second removable bushing in said first bushing, a locking means operable for engaging said rotary table, drive-ring and iirst mentioned bushing when it is desired to rotate them in unison, said locking means being operable to disengage the first named bushing or the rotary table, and means on the base portion operable for engaging the drive-ring and holding the drive-rin and its bushings against rotation when it 1s desired to rotate only the table.
8. ln a rotary drilling machine, a rotary table, means for rotating the table, a drivering, outer and inner bushings Within the drive-ring,- means for connecting and disconnecting the table drive-ring and outer bushing, and means for preventing a vertical movement of 'the inner bushing relatively toy the outer bushing.
