To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMIL IBACH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, who have declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of lPennsylvania, have ,invented certain new and useful improvements in Milling-Fixtures, of which I declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to milling fixtures.
The principal Object of the inventien is to provide a unit milling fixture on which the front or rear inner hubs of motor vehicles can be centered. and held for milling the seating surfaces for the outer hubs.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a unit milling fixture for milling the seating surfaces on inner hubs whereby a hub may be easily rotated and rigidly locked in the different positions relative to its rotation for bringing its seating surfaces into milling position.
Further objects, and objects relating to economies of manufacture and details. of construction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
l accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. My 4invention is clearly dened and pointed out in the appended claims.
A. structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which:

Fig. lll is a vertical, sectional view taken substantially on the line III-III of Figs. l and Il.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, a circular hollow `casting is provided comprisin the base portion 12 and the conical shape portion 13. Securing members 14 are integrally formed on the outer wall of the conical portion 13 having central openings which extend through the base portion 12. At the upper end of each securing member 14 a recess 15 is provided in the outer wall of the conical portion 13. A semi-cylindrisleeve 34 extends' below the cast' cal member 16 is formed on the outer Wall of the casting 10, the purpose of which will later appear.
The inner wall of the conical portion 13 of the casting 10 has an inwardly projecting portion `1'? which provides an upper and lower seating surface 18 and 19 respectively. An annular sleeve 20 is provided, having an outwardly projecting flange 21 on its upper end and its inner surface in the shape of the frustum of an inverted cone. 2O f ts snugly within the upper end of the projecting wall portion 17 and its iange 21 1s adapted t o seat on the Seating surface 18 ef said projecting wall portion. Registering-openings are provided in the fiange 21v and projecting wall portion 17 adapted to receive t e screws 22 whereby the sleeve 21 is held in position. A second annular sleeve 23 is provided, having an outwardly projecting flange 24 on its lower end and its i11- ner surface in the shape of the frustum. of\ a cone. This sleeve 23 ts snugly withinthe lower end of the projecting wall portion 17 and its flange 24 is adapted to seat on the lower seating surface 19 of said projecting` wall portion. The sleeve 23 is held in positionby screws indicated at 25.
A spindle 26 is provided, havin larged end portion 27 on which is ormed a collaror Aband 28. Immediately below the` collar 28 a sleeve 29 is provided, said sleeve having formed on itsv upper end a laterally extending iiange 30 which will be hereafter referred to as lan index plate. The outer surface of lthe sleeve 29 is complementaryY to the inner surface of the annular sleeve 20 and ada ted for rotative movement in said sleeve. iametrically opposed openings are provided in the sleeve 29 and in registering relation therewith, an opening 31 is provided in the enlarged portion 27 of the.
spindle 26, said openings being ada ted to receive the tapered pin 32 where y vthe spindle is held for rotative movement with the sleeve 29. A wedge-shaped sleeve 34 is provided on the lower end of the spindle 26 and held to rotate with said spindle by a locking pin indicated at 35. -The outer surface of the wedge sleeve 34 is adapted to engage the inner surface of the annular sleeve 23. Lock, nuts 36 and 37 are provided on the nthreads 33 whereby the wedge shaped sleeve 34 may be forced upwardly and the friction increased between its outer surface and the inner Surface of the annular sleeve 23. Also, when the wedge shaped sleeve 34 is forced upwardly by the nuts 36 and 37 the spindle is slightly drawndownwardly and the friction between the outer surface of the sleeve 29 and the sleeve 20 is increased. As is obvious, any desired resistance of the spindle against rotation may be had. Openings 36 are provided in the lock nuts 36 and 37 adapted for the insertion of the pins of a Spanner wrench for loosening or tightening t e nuts. An oil vent 39 is provided in the conical portion 13 of the casting 10 whereby the bearing surfaces of the annular sleeves 20 and 23 and the sleeves 29 and 34 may be lubricated.
In the wall of the casting 10 and the semicylindrical member 16 formed on said wall, there is provided an opening 40 adaptedV to receive a sleeve 42. In the sleeve 42 is inserted a compression spring 43 on which is seated a plunger 44. An oblong opening 45 is provided in the wall of the semi-cylindrical member 16 and in registering relation therewith a like opening 46 is provided in the sleeve 44. A threaded opening 47 is provided in the plunger 44 in registering relation with the upper end of the oblong openings 45 and 46 in the semi-cylindrical member 16 and the sleeve 42. The threaded opening 47 is adapted to receive the threaded end of the handle 48.
The upper end of the plunger 44 is reduced to provide a pin or head 50 which has a slightly tapered end 51. In the index plate 30, before referred to, spaced openin s 52 are provided, which are adapted to be rought into registering relation with the pin o r head 51 on the plunger 44 when the spindle 26 is'rotated. A bushing 54 is provided for each opening 52. This bushing has a collar 55 on its lower end and is adapted for a forced iit in the openings 52. `The inner surface of the oomplemental to the tapered head or pin 50 of the plun er 44.
As-is wel known, the inner hubs of auto vehicles consist of various forms. In this instance the hub 56 has an. enlarged pyramidical portion 57 which, in lits illustrative form of embodiment, is a decagonal pyramid having like faces 58. The wheel hub (not shown) has a portion'complemental to the portion 57 of the inner hub 56. The hub 56, at its inner end, has an inner bearing surface 59 for accommodating the usual ball or rollei` bearing. The bearing surface 59 forms the annular shoulder 60. The collar 28 formed on the enlargedend 27 of 'thev spindle is adapted to it snugly in the bearing surface 59 of the hub 54, the upper end circumferentially bushing 54 is 'of the collar engaging the annular shoulder 60 whereby the hub 56 is seated. The outer end of the hub 56 has the bearing surface 61 which forms at its inner end the shoulder 62. Also the outer end of the hub 56 has the usual threads 63 to receive the hub cap 64. Between the bearing surface 61 and the spindle is provided a sleeve 65 adapted to seat on the annular shoulder 62. The outer end of the spindle 26 which extends beyond the hub 57 is reduced, and the shoulder 66 thus provided is flush with the surrounding surface of the bushing 65. The hub cap 64 is provided with a central opening 67 adapted to receive the reduced portion on the outer end of the spindle. On the outer end of the spindle is provided a washer 68 and anut 69 wher'ely the hub cap 64 is held against backing-0 4 'It is to be here noted that the' openings 52 'in' the index plate 30 correspond in number Ito the faces or seating surfaces of the inner hub 56. Also, it is to be observed that the spindle 26 is interchangeableand a spindle of any form may be used which is adapted for mounting the hub to be milled.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is: v
1. In a milling fixture of the class described, thev combination of a base comprising a base plate and a housing formed thereon; a sleeveI secured in said housing having an interior bearing surface the shape of an inverted cone; a spindle; a second sleeve secured to said spindle having an exterior bearing surface complemental -to the bearing surface of the first mentioned sleeve, whereby said spindle is seated for rotative movement; and coperative means on said base and spindle whereby said spindle may be locked in different positions relative to its rotative movement.
2..In a milling fixture of the class described, the combination of a base comprising a base plate and a housing formed thereon; a sleeve secured to the inner wall of said housing having an interior bearing surface in the shape of an inverted cone; a spindle; a sleeve secured to said spindle and having an exterior bearing surface complemental to the bearing surface of said firstvmentioned sleeve; meansgin said housin spindle and housing whereby said spindle e may be locked in di rent positions relative to its rotative movement.
3. In a milling fixture of the class described, the combination of a base comprising a base plate and a housing formed thereon; a sleeve secured to the inner wall. at the upper end of said housing having an interior bearing surface in the shape of an inverted cone; a spindle; a sleeve secured t0 said spindle and having an exterior bearing surface complemental to the bearing surfaceof said first-mentioned sleeve; means in said housing for securing said spindle against upward movement comprising a sleeve secured in the lower end of said housing having a conical shaped interior bearing surface; a second sleeve secured to the lower` end of said spindle having an exterior bearing surface complemental to lthe bearing surface of the last mentioned sleeve; and c0- operating means on said spindle and housing whereby said spindle may be locked in different positions relative to its rotative movement.
4.-In a milling fixture of the class described, the combination of a base provided with a central opening therein, a pair of sleeves mounted in said opening and pro vided with opposed internal conical bearing surfaces, a spindle adapted to 'support an inner hub, a conical sleeve non-rotatably se-' cured to the lower end of said spindle and adjustable longitudinally thereof, an index plate keyed on said spindle, said plate having a downwardly extending conical boss seating on one'of said internal conical bearing surfaces,'and a spring pressed plunger mounted in said base and cooperating with a spaced circumferential series of openings provided. in said index plate, to lock said spindle in any one of a plurality of predeermined positions with reference to said ase.
5. In a milling fixture of the class described, the combination of a base, a spindle rotatively mounted in said base, means for locking said spindle in any one of a plurality of predetermined positions with reference to said base, a collar on said spindle corresponding in dimensions to the inner bearing seat of an inner hub to be mounted on said spindle, a sleeve mounted on the upper end of said spindle and adapted to seat inthe outer bearing. seat of such a hub, a cap adapted to be screwed on the outer end of such a hub and having a central opening receiving the Areduced upper end of said spindle, whereby said cap engages a shoulder on said spindle, the upper end of said sleeve and the upper end of such hub, anda nut screwed on the upper end of said spindle and engaging said cap for the purposes specified.
