Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 7, 1918. Serial No. 257,160.
To all 'whom t lmay concern Be it known that l, LEONARD KUNDiNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sebewaing, in the county of Huron and State of lvfichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bean-Separators,of which the following is a specilication.
This invention ielates to improvements in bean separators and its object primarily is the separation of bad beans and other waste material fiom good beans. A further object is to provide a device of this type that will accomplish the maximum amount of work with the minimum of effort on the part of A further object is to provide a simple compact machine 'ofthis type that is efficient 'in operation and cheap to manufacture.

My separator comprises a frame comprisconnected by the base bars 2, 3 and carrying the top bars 4 to which the auxiliary end frame 5 is se-' cured that supports the hopper 6 the semicylindrical pit 7 of which is formed with an opening which may be closed by al sliding gate 9 having an elongated slot 10 therein through which a pin 11 extends that is carried by the pit 7 said pin slidably securing the said gate to the pit 7 A cord 12 secured to one end of the gate 9 is attached to a thumb screw 13 carried by the hopper which thumb screw, as it is turned in one direction, will serve to slide the gate 9 into open position. -lVithin the hopper pit 7 is a longitudinally grooved feed roller 14 fast upon a shaft 15 which is journaled in the ends of the pit 7 and which carries upon one end a pulley 16 which is connected by belt 17 with 18, 19, the former of which is 'neath the canvas conveyer to the fra-'me are the chutes 59, 60 which are,
arranged upon a pin-shaft 2O carried at one end of a lever 21v fulcruined upon a pin 22 carried by the hopper 6, the opposite end of said lever being connected by a contractile leo spring 23 to the hopper, said lever, spring and pulley 18 serving as adjusting and tightening means for the belt 17. The said pulley 19 is fast upon the conveyer shaft 24 which is journaled in the ends'of the top bars 4, said conveyer shaft carrying a roller 24a and one end of the conveyer 25, the other end of whichds carried by the shaft 26 which carries roller 26% and which is jouriialed .in the bearings 27 carried upon the adjusting screws 28 which move through bearings 29 carried by the frame and which screws are actuated and controlled by the nuts 30. lt is obvious that -by means of the supports of shaft 26 that shaft may he moved toward or away lfrom the shaft 24 t0 regplate the tension of the conveyer 25.
- pon the said shaft 24 a large wheel 31 is made fast which is connected by belt 32 to a small pulley 33 fast upon the double crank shaft 34, said belt 32 passing over the guide pulleys 35, 36, the former of which is carried at the end of a bar 37 fulcrumed upon one of the cross bars 39 of the frame, said bar 37 being yieldingly pressed downward by the spring 40 arranged upon a bolt 41, said bolt connecting the bar 37 and cross bar 39. The said shaft 34 is journaled in a. bearing 42 that connects two of the legs 1 and in a standard 43 carried by thevframework, said shaft carrying a iiy wheel 44, said shaft 34, further, being connected by the pitmen 45, 46 to the edals 47,48 which are operatively connecte 49 carried by the frame. To the top bars 4 I secure a pair of adjustable guide arms 5G which extend inwardly over the conveyer 25 and are retained in adjusted position by means of a pair of spring arms 51, and another pair of adjustable guide arms 52 spaced away from the arms 50 and operatively carried by a bar 53 secured to a shelf 54 connecting the top bars 4 at one end of the machine, -from the conveyer.

The guide arms 50 serve to prevent the beans from spreading laterally and falling off the conveyer which latter member carries them forward or longitudinally of the frame, 4the operator easily preventing them from becoming rhoked between the free ends of said arms. Such beans as may move off the Conveyer laterally between the arms 50 and 52 will drop through the recessed portion 56 of wings into the chutes 59, 60 and out through spoilt (il unto such containers as may be provided for them.A Most of the lbeans will pass from the arms between the arms 52 and will be conducted to the end of the conveyer and deposited through the opening 63 formed between said conveyer and shelf 54 into the chute 62 and vsuch receptacleiasmay easier to pick and sort.
