T allwhom it may concern NEWTON S. NOBLE, and EARL S. Tnno, citizens of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Gas- Mask, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of gas masks and respirators, and its principal object is to provide improved sealing means for the breathing chamber and other Of the accompanying drawings,

Referring at first to Figs. 1 to 3, 10 is a face cover adapted to be made of any suitable material such as rubber or rubberized fabric and provided with straps 11, 12, 13
forming a head harness. 14, let are the eyepieces comprising suitable frames and lenses, and 15 is a nozzle formed integrally with the body of the face cover and inclosing a relatively-small breathing chamber 16. In side connection with this chamber isan inhaling pipe 17 (Fig. 3) leading to the air filter (not shown), and in the bottom wall thereof is an outlet 18 provided with the usual exhaling valve 19.
The outline of chamber 16, when viewed from the rear, as in Fig. 2, is substantially triangular or pear-shaped, and around its rear opening are located suitable free-edged, flexible, soft-rubber packing lips or gaskets, which, as here shown, project laterally both inwardly and outwardly of the chamber, 20 being the inwardly-projecting lip completely surrounding the rear opening of the chamber, whose apex is on the bridge of the nose, and 21, 21 being two similar, outwardly-projecting lips located at the sides of the chamber and merging with a similar, flexible packing lip orfiap 22 which surrounds both of the eye-pieces 14. flap 20 seals the chamber 16 when the wearer exhales, and the outer flap's 21, 22 seal it when'he inhales, the combination of the two providing effectively for both conditions. The marginal portion of the covering 10, which acts only imperfectly to seal the mask because it cannot readily be made to conform accurately to diflerent wearers, is therefore not relied upon as much as in other .masks. I The provision of the relativelysmall breathing chamber 16 greatly reduces the dead-air space as compared with masks which are sealed only by the margins of the face cover. This renders breathing easier and also reduces the fogging of the eye-piece lenses by condensedbreath moisture. The flexible lips 20 and 21 promote the sealing of this chamber by conforming to the wearers face, and the lip or flap 22 performsa similar function for the spaces in front of the wearers eyes.
The embodimentshown in Figs. 4 and 5 differs specifically from the foregoing in the use of a structurally-separate nozzle15 containing the breathing chamber 16 and mounted within the main face cover lO ,.to
the front portion of which it is attached by valve 19.' The nozzle 15 is further supported from the margin 24: of the face cover by means of straps 25, 26 which hold its rear edge against the wearers face. Thefinwardly and outwardly directed packing lips are shown at 2O and 21, and the lower margin of the nozzle in this instance underlies the wearers chin instead of his lower lip. In this case the packing flap surrounding the eye-pieces .1 1 is omitted. A pair of free-edged, depending flaps 27 are provided at the two upper corners of the face cover to increase the sealing effect at these points, their function being broadly similar to that of the flexible packing flaps previously described. v
Various other changes may be made without departing from the scope of our invention, and it will be understood that the invention is not wholly limited to a respirator employing eye-pieces.
lVe claim:
1. In a respirator, the combination of a matic valve controlling the exhaling passage,
. and free-edged, face-engaging, flexible flapsaround the margin of said chamber, projecting inwardly and outwardly, for substantially sealing the interior of said chamber at said margin, during both inhaling and exhaling.
2. A gas mask comprising a face cover, having eye-pieces, a relatively-small breath- 10 ing chamber in front of the nose and mouth,
and a flexible, free-edged, face engaging sealing flap surrounding the eye-pieces and extended downwardly at the sides of said chamber.
