.CHICKEN-Roose.'-
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 113W, 15, 1921.
Application filed February 13, 1920. Serial No. 358,366.
T o all whom t may concern.'
- Be it known that I, THADDEUS C. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States and residing at Grinnell, in the county of loweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken- Boosts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chicken roosts, and more particularly to roosts constructed to receive and dispel therefrom as needed a liquid disinfectant.
Among theA objects of my invention is to provide an improved roost for fowls, adapted to contain therein, and dispel therefrom, a liquid disinfectant; to protect the chickens and other fowls from vermin, lice, mites and insects; further to provide a poultry roost which will contain sufficient amount of the disinfectant within the container, and properly protected from dust, dirt and the like, but capable of transmitting the disinfectant in the shape of oil or gas, to the exterior of the roost, where it will kill, or drive away vermin, but which will permit of suliicient of the disinfectant to reach the outer covering, so thechickens or other fowl roosting on the perch will get the same on their feet, and thereby permit the fumes to pass into their feathers; further to provide extensible supporting elements at both ends of the roost, which may be pushed in or out, so that the roost may be shipped with the ends pushed in, and when received by the purchaser may be pulled out and be adjustable to different lengths desired; and such further objects, advantages, and capabilities as will later more fully appear.
My invention further kresides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment', I desire it to be understood that the saine is to be considered as illustrative only, and not as limiting my invention.
In the' drawings, View of the roost;
Fig. 2 isa fragmentary plan view of the same, having parts of theouter covering and metal container removed; Y
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the roost, showingin elevation the wire ends in closed position, and in dotted lines in extended position;
Figi.- ll is a transverse vertical section Figure l is a perspective showing the slot of the metal container, surrounded by the outer covering;
Y Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but
taken on a plane passing through opening 8 hereinafter referred to.
vFig. 6 isla view similar to Fig. 4:, showing depending flanges of the outer covering.
Referring to the drawings. The roost l consists of a metal container 2, shaped like a long tube, having at its upper edge a longitudinal slot 3 running lengthwise of the roost. It is preferable to have the edges of the longitudinal slot serrated as shown at 4, but they may be modified to any other acceptable contour. The metal tube is provided with stoppers 5, to seal the ends of the tube, 'to hold the contents therein. These stoppers may be made of wood or other suitable material. The roost is also provided with an outer rtube or wrapper 6, which entirely surrounds the tube. This outer wrapper may be made of thin strips of wood or veneer, or other ysuitable substance. A'strip of wood 7 is inserted in the slot, and extends to the bottom of the inner container 2. Such strip is gripped by the serrated teeth l of the slot, and held in contact with the outer covering 6, or one edge, or both edges of the outer wrapper, may if desired, be inserted in the longitudinal'slot Bbetween the serrated edges thereof, and may be of such length that they will reach tothe bottom ofthe interior of the metal tube 2. This is shown in Fig. 6. It will then be seen that lthe longitudinal slot of the metal tube is thereby closed, and the contents thereof are pro- -where liquid material maybe pouredV into the roost. A wire coil, cord, or other suitable material 9 is bound around the outer wrapper 6, the entire length of the tube to bind the vtwo tubes together, and'to provide a better perch forV the fowls roosting thereon. Additional binding and holding means are provided bybands l() at either end or other part of the tube. These bands are adjusted Y provided with adjustable wire ends 13, the arms of which are adapted to .pass through, or by the end blocks 5. These wire ends may be pushed in when the roost is being shipped or handled, and may be pulled out to variable lengths to adapt the roost to be atscrews 11, and a nut l2. The roosts are vtached to racks or foundations of different Widths. n
When the roost is placed in position using the extensible wire ends to adjust it to t e exact space available, liquid disinfectant, insecticide or germicide, or the like,
; is poured into theV interior metal container,
liquid disinfectant, insecticide or germicide' absorbed by said outer wrapper will be to kill, or drive oil' lice, mites and other vermin` The fumes of such disinfectant will also pass into the feathers'of the fowl to serve a similar purpose. The wick-like Vaction of the strip 7, or the depending flanges of the covering 6 in Fig. 6, will also carryV enough of the liquid to the outer wrapper to allow the disinfectant to get on the feet and legs of the fowls, and will tend to keep such fovvls free from vermin.
Having now described my invention,
I claim: i
Q1. In a device of the class described, a metal container, an outer covering of absorbent material, for the absorption of the contents of said container, and wick-like means for transferring said contents from the container to the covering and to support and strengthen said container, said outer wrapper surrounding and inclosing such metal container, except for a small aperture wherein: the contents of said container are inserted.V l
2. In a device of the class described, al metalV container, having running along the top thereof, a longitudinal slot, an outer wrapper or container having depending edges adapted to be inserted in said slot, and to completely fill said slot, except at an aperture for .the insertion of the contents of said metal container, said outer YWrapping being constructed of material'ca-pable of absorbing and carrying moisture.
In a divice Aof the class described, a
lmetal containerprovided at the top thereof With a longitudinal slot having serrated edges, an outercovering ofV absorbent material, a strip ofV absorbent material inserted in said longitudinal slot, and reaching to the bottom of said inside metal'container, said outer covering inclosing said inner container, except `for a Ysmall aperture in i* Witnesses which the contents of said metal container are inserted.
4L. A chicken roost consisting of a metal tube, having a longitudinal slot, Stoppers to be inserted in the ends of said tube, an outer tube of absorbent material, a wicklike'extension of said outer wrapper, extending in said metal container, through said longitudinal slot, and adapted to completely close said slot, except for a small aperture at the top of said roost for Vthe insertion of the vcontents in said metal tube and bandsadapted to-hold said tubes in compact engagement with said Stoppers.
5.A roost 'comprising an inner metal tube, adapted to hold aliquid disinfectant, a small opening in said tube for the insertion of said, liquidY disinfectant; a longitudinal slot running lengthwise of said` tube; an outer wrapper. of absorbent material, wick-like means entirely inclosed by said outer wrapper and extending therefrom through the wall of the metal container to the bottom thereof; means for binding said tubes together. .Y
,6. In a device ofthe class described, a metal tube withend'blocks to close the ends of said tube, a longitudinal slot Vrunning the length of said tube, edges;` an outery wrapper of absorbent inaterial with Adepending edges adapted to be inserted Within said horizontal slot and reaching to the bottom of said metal tube, said outer Wrapper Vcompletely surrounding said metal tube except at a small aperture wherein the contents-of said metaltube are inserted; a, binder coiled around said outer Wrapper; a small binder at each end of the roost, and vadjustable Vwire Grips capable of being extended throughsaid end slot'.
7. In a device ofthe class described, a metalcontainer, having an opening for the insertion of the contents thereof having running along the top thereof a longitudinal slot, an outer wrapper lor container of absorbent material, for the absorption of the of thermetal container to the bottom therehaving serrated e of and completely'iilling said slot except the opening for the insertion of the contents of said container. Y V
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses..
