Be it known that we, BENJAMIN. Scrum)- LER and JACOB Goaoon VInR'rnL, citizens of the United States, and residents of F reeport, L. 1., county of Nassau, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puff- Irons, of which the following is a specification.
Our improvements relate to fabrlc heatmg and smoothing devices, known to the trade as puff irons, in which the material to be treated is drawn over a heated convex contactual surface which performs the double function of a support as well as of means whereby the goods may be mampulated to attain the desired effects without sub ect1ng the same to pressure on both sides thereof; and our invention has for its mam ob ects the heating of such an implement effectually by electricity; the provision of means whereby ironing heads of different sizes and shapes may be readily substltuted for each other according to the varying requlrements of use; and the adaptation of the device for convenient installation wherever electrical circuits are available, all as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed speclfically.

S, is a tubular standard formed with a relatively broad base S to aiford adequate support for the convex 1ron1ng head H, under the stress of use. The base S, is formed with a recess or sleeve 8, in which is positioned a bushin b, of any suitable insulating material. mbedded in the insulating bushing b, are two metallic sockets e, e, for the reception of the terminal plugs p, p, of wires w, w, forming part of an electric circuit.
The plug sockets e, e, are connected electrically by copper or other suitable wire conductors c, c, with binding posts (1, d, secured to the lower portion of another bushing 12', of insulating material fitting tightly or otherwise secured in position in the upper end of the standard S. This upper bushmg 6', is formed with two vertical recesses 5 b lnto which the upper ends of the binding posts d, d, protrude as shown in Fig. l, PIOJGCtlIlg sufiiciently above the bottom of the bushlng of insulating material to form contacts for electrical engagement with the lower ends of the terminal rods 1", r, of the resistance coil R, which constitutes heating element. The ends of the coil R, are 'of course electrically connected to the upper ends of the terminal rods 7*, r, by suitable means, as by binding nuts r, r, or equivalent expedients.
This relatively fiat resistance coil R, formed of suitable metallic wire is embedded 1n a layer M, of mica, asbestos, or other suitable refractory insulating material, which is confined between the convexo-concave face plate 71., of the head H, and the clamping plate K, thereunder by means of nuts 70, 70, on the assembly bolts A, A,the threaded upper ends of which latter engage with female screw threads formed for their reception in the concave under side of said face plate It, and said bolts A, A, extending through both the clamping plate K, and the back plate h, of the head, and being threaded not only for engagement with the aforesaid clamping nuts 7c, is, but also for engagement with the nuts 11, a, Which secure the back plate in, in position. Thus the two assembly bolts A, A, with their nuts 70, 7c, and n, n, afford means whereby the three main parts of the head (the face plate, heating element M, R, and back plate It) may be effectually secured together in a simple manner, thereby reducing cost of manufacture to a minimum while insurin a rigid unitary structure of ironing hea which is especially desirable in this case because we purposely make the ironing head H, easily detachable from the standard S, and contemplate the provision and use with each standard S, of a pluralit of ironing heads H, of different shapes an sizes adapted to the varying requirements of the dissimilar kinds or shapes of goods to be treated.
To this end we support the coil terminal rods 1', '7', in a block F, of insulating fiber or other suitable insulating material, which is securedin position by and between flanges on the clamping plate K, and the back plate (13', by the nuts 11, n, as will be understood by reference particularly to Fig. 1, of the drawings. Thus held and centralized, the terminal rods 1, r, are in alinement with the inner, upper ends of the binding posts (Z, d, which protrude into the recesses 6 b in the upper insulating bushing b, as hereinbefore stated. Hence, when the ironing head H, is lifted from the standard S, contact between the coil terminal rods 1, r, and the circuit terminal posts (Z, d, is broken automatically without any disconnection of parts other than that suilicient to release the head from rigid engagement with the top of the standard. Although we do not wish to limit ourselves in this respect to the identical structure shown, we prefer to effect the temporary union between head H, and standard S, by forming the back plate with a socket sleeve 71?. which fits over the upper end of the standard S,said socket sleeve 71 having an internal shoulder 71". which rests upon the top of the standard S, and the back plate h, and its sleeve being attached to the standard S, by means of a thumb screw t, or equivalent mechanical expedient easy to manipulate.
Thus, by simply loosening the thumb screw 2 the head H, may be immediately detached from the standard S, by simply lifting it off the latter, without otherwise disconnecting parts. terminals, or wires; and the ironing head H, or another like 1t in structure, but different in external configuration, may be as quickly and easily mounted on the standard, ready for immediate use, without connecting up parts other than to tighten the thumb screw 1, the coil terminal rods 1, 7', automatically contacting with the circuit terminal posts (I, (I. when the head is lowered into position upon the upper end of the standard S.
This feature of providing for the convenient and expeditious substitution or replacement of ironing heads on the standard is an important feature of our invention since it enables us to provide each electrical installation e.,each standard S,interposed in a suitable electric circuit) with a set or plurality of ironing heads each specially adapted to the treatment and manipulation of a particular shape or class of goods. garments or materials,-a practical advantage where puff irons are used, especially in establishments where economy of space is a desideratum, or where facilities for electric installation are restricted.
And another feature of import is the ease with which such installation may be effected in the case of our device,it being simply necessary to insert the electric circuit terminal plugs 11, p, into the sockets c, e, in the base plate S, of the standard S, in order to effect this result.
By embedding the resistance coil R, in a layer of refractory material such as mica,
asbestos, or the like, we effectually insulate the coils from each other while applying the full value of the heat generated directly against and to the face plate at an even temperature throughout the whole extent thereof.
In our concurrent application Serial No. 306,999, filed June 26, 1919, we show and describe a puff iron of the same type as that disclosed herein but embodying features not herein contained nor claimed.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A device of the character designated, comprising an ironing head formed with a concavo-convex face plate, a concavo-convex layer of refractory material contacting with the concave surface of said concaveconvex face plate, an electric resistance coil embedded in said concavoconvex layer of refractory insulating material, a convex clamping plate securing said concavoconvex layer of refractory material to said concavo-convex face plate, and means for passing an electric circuit through said re sistance coil, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character designated. an ironing head formed with a convexo-concave face plate. a layer of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil em edded in said layer of refractory insulating material, a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate contacting with said face plate and said clamping plate. assembling screws and nuts securing all three of-said plates rigidly together in one unitary structure, and means for passing an electric current through said resistance co l, for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character designated, an ironing head formed with a convexo-con cave face plate, a layer of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil ember led in said layer of refractory insulating material, a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate, assembling screws and nuts securing all three of said plates rigidly together in one unitary structure, and means for passing an electric current through said resistance coil. for the purpose described.
4. In a device of the character designated, an ironing head formed with a convexo-concave face plate, a layer of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil embedded in said layer of refractory insulating material, a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate, assembling screws and nuts securing all three upper end of a standard, said standard, and
means for passing an electrical current through the resistance coil, for the purpose described.
5. In a device of the character designated. an ironing head formed with a convexo-concave face plate, a layer of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil embedded in said layer of refractory insulating material, a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate, assembling screws and nuts securing all three of said plates rigidly together in one unitary structure, said back plate being formed with a socket sleeve for engagement with the upper end of a standard, said standard, means for detachably securing said socket sleeve to the standard, and means for passing an electrical current through the resistance coil, for the purpose described.

In a device of the character designated, an ironing head formed with a convexo-concave face plate, a layer of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil embedded in said layer of refractory insulating material, a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate, means for securing all of the three said plates rigidly together, a block of insulating material secured in position by and between said clamping plate and said back plate, coil terminal rods mounted in and extending through said block of insulating material and adapted to contact at their outer extremities with circuit terminal posts .in the head-supporting standard, said standard and circuit terminal posts, and means for passing an electric current through said resistance coil and connections, for the purpose described. In a device of the character designated, an ironing head formed with a convexo-concave face plate, a layer'of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil embedded in said layer of refractory insulating. material, .a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate, means for securing all three said plates rigidly together, a block of insulating material secured in position by and between said clamping plate and said back plate, coil terminal rods mounted in and extending through said block of insulating material and adapted to contact at theirouter extremities with circuit terminal posts in the head-supporting standard, said standard formed with a bushing of insulating material on which said circuit terminal posts are mounted, said circuit terminal posts,
and means of passing an electric currenttherethrough and through said coil terminal posts and coil, for the purpose described.
8. In a device of the character designated, an ironing head formed with a conveXo-concave face plate, a layer of refractory insulating material contacting with the inner side of said face plate, an electric resistance coil embedded in said layer of refractory insulating material, a clamping plate for supporting said layer and resistance coil at the back of the face plate, a back plate, means for securing all three said plates rigidly together, a block of insulating material secured in position by and between said clamping plate and said back plate, coil terminal rods mounted in and extending through said block of insulating material and adapted to contact at their outer extremities with circuit terminal posts in the head-support ing standard, said standard formed with a bushing of insulating material on which said circuit terminalposts are mounted, and also with a bushing of insulating material in which circuit terminal sockets are mounted, said circuit tflminal posts and said circuit terminal sockets, electric conductors connectin the same, and means for passing an electr1c current through said coil and circuit connections, ,for the purpose described.
'9. An ironing head of the character designated, provided with an electric resistance coil having terminal rods in alinement with and adapted to contact with, circuit terminal posts'in a supporting'standard when the head is positioned on said standard, said standard and said circuit terminal posts,
and means of connecting the latter with an electric circuit, whereby the resistance coil will be electrically connected or disconnected automatically by the positioning of the head upon or its removal from said standard, for the purpose described.
10. In combination with a supporting standardiormed with electric circuit terminal posts and connections, a detachable ironing head provided with an electric res stance coil having terminal rods adapted to contact directly with said circuit terminal posts of the standard when the head is positioned on the latter, for the purpose described.
