TANK-CAR DOME.'
Specification of-Letters Eatent.
Patented Maia-8,1921.
Applicationled August 21, "1919. Serial No. 313,383. I
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN .T .MCBRIDL re'- siding at New York, in the county and State of New York, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Car Domes, of which the' following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiomsuc'h as will enable others skilled in th art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate vthe preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not'limited to theexact details of construction shown and described,
as it is obvious' that various modificationsl thereof within the 'scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is' a side elevation of a tank car embodying my invention; v
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line II-II'O Fig. 1;.and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the 'line iii-1n 0f Fig. 1.
With the introduction into commercial use of liquid hydrocarbons obtained by. compressing those hydrocarbons found in a no1'- mally gaseous state, it has been found desirable to increase the volume of the tank car dome so as to permit of thevaporization occurring when such liquid hydrocarbons are transported without an undesirable rise of pressure in the tank or excessive loss by escape through the safety valves. 'With this object in view my invention consists of a tank car dome extending longitudinally of the'tank a suflicient distance. to obtain thedesired volume.`
In Fig. 1 of the drawings-A designates the car tank attachedby straps B, or in'any desired manner, to the car frame C, of any usual or desired construction, carried A'by suitable trucks D; 2 designates my improved tankdome, which lconsists of a' middle section 3, substantially semi-cylindrical in shape andofany desiredlength,
andend sections l of a general spherical shape. The end sections may be shaped separately from. the middlev section and joined thereto by riveting or welding or, Jfor f the smaller sizes, the entire dome Vmay-bev shaped from a singleplate at one operation.
Placing the dome with its'longitudinal axisv parallel to the longitudinalaxes' ofthe tank `dome sheet.
f middle' and end curved middleandend sections. 8; A -tankicar having afframe, a 'tank car ried by said frame and ai dom-e on said'ta'nli having its longitudinal axisv parallel'to the Vcenter line cf said frame and its greatest' transverse dimension less than that ofsaid.
tank,
and car frame permits or the dome being' 'f The tank .and thedome are joined as at 5, in any suitable manner, as by' riveting or welding.` 'Provision 1s made, as shown in the 'middle section 3 yin the drawin s, for the dome head opening by means o a flanged collar 6 secured to the tank dome sheet in any suitable manner and in which the cover 7 1s screwed.v Safety valves 8 are screwed into flanged collars 9 attached tothe tank u Openings, as 10- and 11, are provided 1n the tank sheets to permit of entry to the tank and escape of vapor to the dome.-
WhatrI claim is:
l. The combination in a tankcar, .of a tank and a dome for said tank havingits longitudinal axis extendinglengthwise of the car and having its greatest transverse dimension less than. that of .said tank.
2. The combination'in a tank car, of aV 'tank and a dome lfor said'tank comprising a section of substantially serni-cylin dricalv shape extending lengthwise'of the car and 'having a radius less than'that of said tank.
3. A tank car domecomprising a middle dome section having 'its longitudinal axisv parallel tothe longitudinal axis of the tank and its lgreatest transverse dimension less than that of the tank and end dome sections closing the. ends of said middle section.
y 4. A tank car dome comprising a semicylindrical middle dome; section extending lengthwise oi the tank and having its greatest transverse dimensionless than that of A tank car dome comprising ay middle section 'provided with manhole and safety -valve openings and. endsections closing the ends ofsaidmiddle section.' 6. A tank car'domecomprising integral `sections extending lengthwise of thetank. v I
7. An integral tank lcar dom e comprising 9. A tank car having a frame, a tank cai.'- ried by said frame and a semi-cylindrical dome foi' said tank having a radius less than that of said tank, said frame, tank and dome having thei-'rlongitudinal axes parallel.
' 10. A tank car having/a' frame, atank can ried by said frame and a dome for said tank comprising a semi-cylindrical middle section and curved end sections extending wise of the frame.
11.v An integral tank car dome comprising a middle and end sections pressed from a single sheet of metal.
, 12. An integral tank cai' dome comprising curved middle and end sections formed from a single' sheet of metal.
13;' An integral tank car dome comprising a semi-cylindrical middle section and lengthl tending lengthwise of the tank and' havinga diameter different from that of the tank. 15. In atank car, a tank and a dome for i said tank having a semi-cylindrical middle section of a diametei` different-from thatof said tank and curved end sections engaging saidmiddle section and said tank.
In Witness whereof 1 have hereunto set my hand 1n the `presence volltwo Witnesses.
JOHN J. MCBRIDE.
