IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,070, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM GowENLocK, of Susquehanna Depot, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Cylinder Lubricators; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that class of lubricators in which the steam is admitted into the valve-stem for the purpose of heating the 1ubricating material, and it consists in two or more hollow branch tubes attached to the valve-stem within the heating-chamber so as to allow the steam to heat the parts of the lubricating material more remote from the central valve-stem, as will be hereinafter more `fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in whicht Figure l is a vertical section of my entire lubricator, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the central valve-stem with branches.

other and more solid lubricating material may be used. Below the supply and heating chamber a is the injector-chamber b, and below the same is the stem to be screwed into the place where the lubricator is to be used. d represents the valvestem,the upper end of which pisses through a stuffing-box, h, in the center of the lid, and is attached to a lever, j, by means of which it is operated. On the stem d are two valves, e and f, the upper valve e closing the aperture in the bottom of the supply-chamber a, and the lower valve f closing the lower end of the lubricator-stem.
When the valve-stem is raised so that the valve f is closed, the valve e will be open, allowing the melted lubricating material to pass from the supply-chamber a into and fill the injector-chamber b. Then, by lowering the Valve-stem, the valve e is closed and the valve f opened, when the injector-chamber b will discharge into the steam chest or cylinder.
The valve-stem d is hollow from its lower end g upward for a suitable distance, allowing the steam to pass up into the same, and thus heat and melt the lubricating material; but it has been found that, when the more thick or solid lubricating materials are" used, only that part immediately around the valve-stem will become suiciently heated and melted. To obviate this difficulty I attach two 0r more hollow branches, c c, to the stem d within the supply-chamber a, into which branches the steam will pass from the valve-stem, and thus heat and melt the parts of the lubricating material more remote from the valve-stem. The branches c c may be arranged and attached to the stem in any suitable manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the hollow valve-stem of a lubricator of the class herein described, twoor more 'hollow branches, c c, attached to the stem, substantially'as and for the purposes herein set forth.
