Description
II. 8. FISHERQ Wheels for Road Steamers.
Patented March 25,1873.

JAMES s. FISHER, on UTIGA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FOR ROAD-STEAMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,065. dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. FISHER, of Utica, in the county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel for Road-Steamers and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description there of, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being bad to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wheel for steam road-wagons, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to desr rlbe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my wheel. Fig. 2 is an interior view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4: are side views thereof. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the steampipes.
A represents the center of the wheel, to which the boiler is connected by means of steam-pipes B B. (J is the outside or rim of the wheel inclosin g an annular space or chamber, E, and fitted to revolve around the center A on shoulders to a, as shown in Fig. 1. In the space or chamber E are three or more partitions, b, dividing the same in three or more equal parts. D D represent two circular revolvin g valves, placed one on each steam-pipe Bin a correspondingly-shaped recess in the center A, and extending across the space or chamber E up against the inner surface of the rim 0. In each valve D are made notches or recesses at corresponding in size with the partitions I), so that during the revolution of the rim said partitions will enter said notches or the steam, which passes through the passages k in the center A and out at m in the center G, for each of the stops at, the inner end ofv which lever rests upon a rod, 'i, that passes through the center and bears on the stop a. On the rim O are inclines s s, over which the outer ends of the levers G G are to travel, and the whole so arranged that the two levers corresponding to each valve will be turned on their pivots to force the stops it a. outward by the rods '5 i just at the time when the partition I) enters a notch, d, on the valve D to turn the same. As soon as the valve has been turned one-fourth of a revolution, and the levers G G cleared the incline, the stops it a spring in ward and hold the valve at rest.
The steam enters through each of the pipes B, and passes through one of the passages e in each valve D leading to the chamber E, Where the steam, acting on the valve and on the nearest partition 1), causes the rim 0 to revolve until the following partition I) enters the notch 01 in the valve next to that from which the steam is issuing. The valve, being at this moment released, as above described, is by said partition turned one-fourth of a revolution, at
once cutting off the steam, and as soon as this movement of the valve is completed the valve is locked, and the steam entering through the passage 0, which has taken the place of the first of said passages mentioned, and operates in the same manner on the second partition. The steam contained between the two partitions is exhausted through the other valve by passing through the passage e leading from the notch d, which is to be operated on by the advancing partition, to the passage h on the exterior of the steam-pipe; then through the other two passages e c, which are Within the center A, and then through grooves 70 to the passages 70, and out at m. Thus the steam which enters through one valve is exhausted through theother, and vice versa.
To reverse the motion of the wheel, the steampipes B B are revolved by any suitable means one-fourth of a revolution, bringing the openingf toward the other side of the valves.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The valves D provided with notches d (l and passages c c, as described, in combination with the stationary center A and revolving rim (3 forming the chamber E, said chamber provided with partitions b b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the Wheel A O and valves D D, the steam -pipes B B with side ports ff and passages h h and the grooves 70, passages k, and exhaust-port m in the Wheel, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
August, 1872.
JAMES S. FISHER.
