LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed May 10, 1920. Serial No. 380,207.
To oil we mit may concern Be it known that I, ARoHILLn VILLnNnUvn, a. British subject, mechanical drai'tsman, res. lug Notre Danie de Levis, in the Province Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Levels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to improve- -ents in levels, and to properly comprehend invention reference should be had to iollowng description and accompanying drawings.
in the drawings Figure is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. :2 is a cross section in Fig. i.
Fig. is a cross section view on line 22 in Fig. 1, with modification of the pendulum weight.
Fig. i is an enlarged detail side elevation of the pivoting arrangementon which the indicator or hand mounted, a portion of the level only being illustrated in section.
Like numerals or reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings 2 1 is the beam comprising two half portions 9 and secured together by the screws one 01 seid half portions 2 having interthereof a semi-circular lug 5 having iew on line 2-2 mediate on one side thereof a graduated or dial plate 6 to indicate the angles, and the other portion 3 being also provided with a semicircular lug 7 pref ably of smaller diameter than the lug 5, in order to clear the graduation thereon.
Both oi said semi-portions 2 and 3 are slotted on their inner side to rel recess 8 that is preferably en- 9 and 10 is longitudinal recess Y of said lugs 5 and 7 is a stub 11 on which is nwunted the pointer or iacent said dial 6,
shaft hand 19 which projects said pointer having a downward projecting portion on which is secured the pendulum weight 13. The stub shaft 11 is preferably provided at each end with the sockets 14: in which is secured the blocks 15. said blocks 15 having centrally thereof a conical hole 16 in which is adapted to engage the conical end of the pins 17. One of said pins is pretably threaded, while the other pin is adapted to fit in a cavity 18 in the threaded plug 19 and is provided with a collar 20. Between said collar 20 and the plug 19 is provided a spiral spring 21 which ollers a slight and constant pressure against said pin, to take up any slack between said pins 17 and said stub shaft 11.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the pendulum weight 13 is adapted to roll over the bottom of said recess 9 and is journaled on the pins 22 which are secured in the forked ends 28 of the pointer or hand 12. The bottom of said recess 9 is preferably circular as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In this modification, the weight is supported by the bottom of the recess while in the form disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the weight is entirely supported by the pointer.
What I claim as my invention is 1- 1. A device of the character described, comprising a beam divided longitudinally in two portions, each of said portions having intermediate the ends thereof a semi-circular outward projecting lug; there being graduations on one of said lugs; and a central recess in each of said portions; a pointer suitably mounted within said central recess; and a pendi n weight mounted at one end of said pointer substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, comprising beam divided longitudinally in two portions, one of said portions having a dial thereon; there being a central re ess in each of said portions, said recess having a semi-circular bottom; a pointer suitably mounted within said central recess; a pendulum weight rotatably mounted on one end of said pointer, said pendulum weight being adapted to roll on the circular bottom of ARCHILLE VILLENEUVE.
