Be it known that l, ABRAHAM Nevron, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in YWasher and .String Attaching Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are diagrammatic sections, showing the steps in the Stringing, and in the washer and string forwarding operations. F ig. 11 is a plan view and partial section of the bottom washer forming and forwarding mechanism, and Fig. 12 is a side view and partial section of' the same. Fig. 13 is a View of an envelop to which washers and string have been attached by my machine.
For detailed descriptions of the mechanism used for attaching a washer and string to an envelop by means of an eyelet, reference is made to my Patent 1,104,128 and for descriptions of the mechanism for use in forming bottom washers and for attaching them t0 envelope, reference-is made to my Patent 1,255,558 and to the patent to Olm 1,114,177. Only a general description of the above mentioned mechanism as is used in connection with the present invention need be given hereinafter for the purpose of understanding the invention proper.
The main driving shaft 1, controlled by a one revolution clutch not shown, is driven through pulley 2 from a source of power not shown. The various submechanisms are driven through cams or cranks mounted on main shaft 1 as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A bottom washer forming mechanism, similar to that shown by Patent 1,114,17 7 is driven by cam 3 on shaft 1, through rod 1., which is connected to crank 5, loosely mounted on shaft 6. .A pawl 7 pivoted on the end of rod 4f, engages ratchet wheel 8 for intermittently turning shaft 6 to rotate paper forwarding rolls 9 and 10 for advancing the web of paper 11 a sulhcient distance at each impulse to form a squa 1e washer at the setting position, this being the term l will use to designate that point in the machine where the top washer, eyelet, string and bottom washer are assembled in proper relation and the eyelet clenched to secure the washers and string to thev envelop.
For forming the bottom washer .12 from web 11, (Figs. 12 and 13) stationary blade 13 on an anvil 20 coaets with the'edge of hollow die 14 to sever the web between them. Said die le is arranged to reciprocate vertically, a stationary cutting pin 15 coacting with said die to cut a hole in web 11 in the center of the next prospective washer of said web, while the first washer is being severed. For reciprocating said die, a series of connections are provided, comprising link 16, rod 17, lever 18, and cam 19, operated from shaft 1.
An eyelet supplying chute 21 is pivoted to upper frame 22 at 23, and is arranged to be oscillated by means of cam roller 24, which is fastened to vertically reciprocating shalt 25 by a split collar as 26, and which engages cam 27 on said chute. The timing ot the parts is such that an eyelet as 28 is brought into setting position at about the same time that a top Washer and bottom washer are brought to that position in a manner known in the art. y l
The `setting or clenching o1 the eyelet is accomplished by the usual mechanism used for that purpose, (Fig. 1) such as reciprocating shaft 25, operated through Vlever 32, and rod 29, from cam disk'30 on shaft 1. said shaft-25 carrying pilot needle 31 and eyelet Hanging die 33 in the lower endthereoi. Aspring 34 is placed in shaft 25 in the space above needle 3l, and acts to maintain said needle normally in its extended posi-y tion. On anvil 20, is provided a stationary die35 of suitable shape to coperate with dief33 to iange the eyelet when shaft is brought down to its lowest position where by pressure is put on the eyelet by m vable Hanging die The mechanism tor supplying` top lwashers 36 and for 'delivering them one at a time to the setting position, Vis supportedby auxiliary trame 37 suitably attached, as by screws 138 to upper frame 22. Said frame 37 has an opening 36 therein which is used as a washer' reservoir, a gate 39 adjustably cured in anopening as 40, being provided to partly close the lower side oi said reser- -voir 38. y
' Frame 37 has guides 41 at the bottom thereof, slots 32 being cut in said guides to receive stepped forwarding slide 43. Washer ejecting member 44,shaped at its forward end at to lit washer 36 is set into slide 43 so that it projects upwardly from said slide an amount equal tothe thickness of one ot saidwashers 36, to form the lirst step in said slide. Depression 46 at the forward end ot slide 43 is cut down into said slide a distance somewhat greater than the thickness of. said washer to form the second step, and is undercut at the rear portion 47 thereon to prevent the washer resting in said depression't'rom being lifted out. A slot 48 .somewhat greater in width than the diameter et the hole in Vwasher 36 extends from the forward edge of slide 43 rearwardly a suiicienty distance such that a Washer in contact with edge 45 is positioned with the hole thereinV directly over the rear end of said slot.l
For reciprocating said slide 43, lever 49 pivoted at 50 from bracket 51 of lower trame .32 and carrying cam roller 123 in engagement with the outer edge of cam 30 on shai't 1, is oscillated on the rotation o said cam and in turn oscillartes shaft 53 carried by brackets 54 and 55 from frame 22, through connecting link 56 and crank 57 on said shaft 53. Crank 58 mounted on said shaft 53 is connected to one end of link 59, the other end of said link being connected to post 60 suitably attached to the rear end or slide 43. Cam 30is designed to halt the slide so that the washer carried thereby brought to the stringing position for having a string passed through the hole thereof, and another washer is carried in depression 46 at the same time to the setting position to allow pilot needle 31 to pass through said washer, said cam also being shaped to carry said slide rearwardly Ito its initial position in proper time.
For supporting stringl tube 6l for reciprocation vertically therein, an opening 62 is made in trame 37 rhe lower end of string lube 6l is constricted to form string needle 63 of a diameter slightly less than that of. the hole in washer 36, string 64 being threadcd through said tube and needle from a suitably supported spool, not shown.
The mechanism for reciprocating tube 61 and needle 63 comprises cam 65 on shaft 1, which actuates-crank 66 through cam roller 67, and lever 68 connected at one end to said crank 66 and at the other end to crank 69 on shaft 70 passing through trame 22, arm'71 being` .suitably mounted on that end of shait 70 opposite to the one on which crank 69 is mounted, :said arm 7l engaging tube 6l at double collar 72` Spring 77 attached at one end to rod 76 on sha'tt 70, and at the other end to pin 78 on frame 22, serves to take backlash out of the connections. A pair of blades 73 and 74 are provided as close as is mechanically possible to shaft 25 for sever- Y ing the string 64, said blades being pivotally attached to frame 37 by means ot screw 75. Springs 79 and SO attached at one end respectively to blades 73 and '74 are connected at the other ends to pins 8l and S2 respectively, on iframe 22, and serve to keep said blades normally apart, stop 63 on trame 37 acting tolimit the separating movement of said blades by engaging projections S4 and 65 thereof. Collar 86 is mounted on the lower end of shaft 25, and carries two pins 87 and 88 thereon, of sufficient length to engage blades 73 and 74 respectively for pressing said blades together to sever the string between them on the downward movement .-3
of said shaft 25.
A pair ot string gripping tongs 89 is carried byV arm 91 which ends in cylindrical portion a spring acting to urge the string gripping jaws of saidtongs towardv ieu each other. Radial adjustment of tongs 89 is provided for by moving cylinder 92 in or out of hollow cylinder 93 carried by arm 94 on shaft 95, a screw 96 being arranged to hold arm 91 in adjusted position. For opening tongs 89 a iinger 97, pivoted on bifurcated arm 91 at 100 and carrying cam roller 98, is ldisposed so that said roller 98 engages the outer edge of adjustable cam arm 101 on the rearward oscillation of arm 91. A stationary stud 104 (Fig. 1) suitably mounted in frame 22 carries stationary segment 102 having slot 103 (Fig. 7) therein, said arm 101 being adjustably fastened in slot 103 by wing nut and bolt 99, the inner end of said arm 101 `being loosely mounted' on shaft 95.
The mechanism for rotating shaft 95 is so designed that adjustment thereof will vary the length of only one end of the arc through which tongs 89 travel, the limiting position of the other end of said arc being the Stringing position, by which I mean that the point of the machine at which a string loop is formed by string needle 63 in manner more fully described hereinafter. Said shaft 95 is supported in bracket 105 extending from trame 22, and in segment V102, and has mounted thereon bevel gear 106. Meshing with said gear 106 is segmental bevel gear 107 supported on stud 104 for oscillation thereon. Segment-107 has slotted arm 108 extending therefrom to which is adjustably attached a hollow connecting coupling 109 by means of wing nut and bolt 110 passing through slot 111, which is suitably' curved. Said coupling 109 has slots 112 therein to receive pin 113 of connecting red 114 attached to rod 115 of cam disk 30, a spring 116 being provided between rod 114 and coupling 109 of suflieient strength te keep said rod and coupling normally in the position shown in Fig. 1, said spring being designed to take up motion of rod 114 past the usual limiting position o f said rod. A stop 117 on frame 22 is arranged to prevent oscillation of segmental gear 107 past a predetermined point, namely, the Stringing position. Stop 118 is adjustably held in bracket 119 supported from frame 37, by set screw 120 and is arranged te strike lng 121 on finger 97 for withdrawing said iinger from between tongs 89 when said tongs reach the Stringing position.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows:
String tube 61 having been threaded, top washer reservoir 38 having been supplied with washers. eyelet chute 21 having been provided .ith eyelets, a web of paper havinfr been drawn between rolls 9 and 10 and between die 14 and pin 15, and the envelop to w ich string` is to be attached having been properly placed on anvil 20, pulley 2 is started revolving. Slide 43 is thereby moved from its rearmost position toward the Stringing position, member 44 removing the bottom washer' of the nile, which rests on slide 43 past gate 39 into the stringing position. (Fig. 9). Tube 61 moves downwardly when said slide has been halted in the Stringing position, needle 63 carrying string 64 with it through the hole in washer 36. (Fig. 10). At the same time, shaft 95 is rotated to bring tongs 89 ton/ard the stringing position, and slide 43 is moved rearwardly. The washer is held on slide 43 by needle 63 which passes through slot 48 of said slide, whereby the washer is forwarded to depression 46. When tongs 89 in their forward oscillation are very close to the stringing position, finger 90 having been inserted between the ends of said tongs to keep the jaws thereof open, needle 63 is lifted out of washer 36, the diameter of said needle being only slightly less than that of the washer hole, string 64 is held by friction against the side of the hole while said needle is being withdrawn therefrom, and a loop in string 122 is left pendent from said washer. Immediately after the withdrawal of needle 63, the open tongs 89 reach loop 122, lug 121 of finger 97 striking stop 118 to rotate said finger about pivot 100 for withdrawing said finger from said tongs, whereby spring 90 acts to close the jaws of said vtongs upon loop 122. (Fig. 8). The closed tongs are now swung rearwardly while slide 43 is advanced between blades 73 and 74 whereby a length of string is fed through tube 64, and the washer 36, which has been strung, is forwarded to the setting position with the string therethrough.y said washer being prevented from lifting oif slide 43 by being drawn back into the undercut part 47 of depression 46, by the pull on the string, and another washer is removed by member 44 from thel pile. (Fig. 9).
As tongs 89 reach their rearmost position, shaft reaches its highest position and chute 21 presents an eyelet into setting position above the forward top washer held by slide 43, the last part of the rearward me tion of tongs 89 causing cam roller 98 Vto engage the outer edge of arm 101 to insert finger 97 between said tongs, causing them to release the string loop. At this time, die 14 is about to move down to eut off a washer from web 11. As tongs 89 again move forward, shaft 25 moves downwardly, pilot pin 31 passing through an eyelet, top washer and envelop until it comes in contact with stationary die 35. Needle 63 now passes through the washer removed from the pile by member 44 as above described, while slide 43 again moves rearwardly to leave the foremost washer on pilot needle 31, needle 63 again forms the loop 122, tongs 89 move forward to grasp theI string, and shaft 25 moves downwardly until dies 33 and 35 eoact to drive Vthe eyelet through the top washer, envelop and bottom washer, and to flange the eyelet, (Figs. 3 and 8), a bottom .washerbeing severed from web 11 just before the Hanging` takes place.

ifljustment of the machine for cutting strings of various lengths is obtained by moving nut and bolt 110 in slot 111, adjusting arm 101 in slot 103, and adjusting arm 91 radially.
lt will he seen that the string feed is positive, and automatic, and that the stringis automatically fed and cut therdesired length without attention on the part of the operator.
What l claim is: Y
1. ln a machine of the character described, means for stringing a washer, means for fastening said washer and the string passingA therethrough to an envelop, and means adja' cent to said fastening means forautomatically` severing` said string close to said washer.
2. ln a machine of the character described, means for Stringing a washer comprising means for forming a. free string loop pend ent from theopening in said washer, and means for gripping said loop bodily for drawing a predetermined length of string through said washer.

In a machine of the character described, means for passing string through a washer at a point in space relation to the setting position, means for gripping said string` and for dra-wing a predetermined length of string through said washer, and means for forwarding said string and washer to the setting position. v
4. In a machine of the character described, reciprocating means for passing a loop of Y string through a washer at a point in space relation to the setting position, means for gripping said string and for drawing a predetermined length of string through said washer, and means for forwarding the washer with the string therethrough to the Y setting position. In a machine of the character described, means for intermittently feeding string comprising oscillatoryT means for gripping said string, means for causing said gripping means to release said string and means for varying the position of one end of the arc through which said gripping means is oscillated for varying the length of string fed by said gripping means.

In a machine of the character described, means for Stringing a washer in space relation to the setting position comprising a reciprocating hollow needle adapted to have string passed therethrough tor forming a string loop pendent from said washer, means for reciprocating said needle and means for gripping said loop for drawing a length of string through saidwasher, means for forwarding said washer and string to the setting position, means for delivering an eyelet into setting position, means for forming a bottom washer at the setting position, means for Hanging said eyelet for fastening said washer and string to an envelop, and means for severing said string.
24. In a machine of the character described, a washer reservoir, means for removing one washer at a time from said reservoir, and for forwarding said washer to to Stringing position, and means for feeding string through said Washer at the stringing position comprising means for forming a String loop pendent from Said washer, means for gripping said string and for drawing a length of string through said washer, and means for causing said gripping means to release Said strin at apredetermined point in the oscillation of said gripping means.
25. In a machine of the character described, means for forwarding a washer into Stringing position, means for feeding string through said washer comprising means for forming a string loop pendent from said washer, means for gripping said String and for drawing a length of string through said washer, and means for causing said gripping means to release 'said string at a predetermined point, means for delivering an eyelet into Setting position, means for forming a bottom washer at the setting position, means for severing Said string, and means for fianging said eyelet for fastening Said washers and stiing to an envelop.
26. In a. machine of the character described, astepped slide for removing one washer at a time from a washer reservoir, means for Stringing said washer, and means for reciprocating Said slide for causing the rearmost step of said slide to carry a wa Sher to the Stringing posit-ion, for causing the forward step of said slide to carry a washer with the string passing therethrough to the setting position, and for retracting said slide whereby said stringing means coacts with said slide for forwarding a washer from the rearmost to the foremost step.
27. In a machine of the character de-y scribed, means for feeding a predetermined length of string through an opening comprising a pair of spring tongs for gripping a string, means for oscillating thetongs with the string grasped therein to a predetermined point and for` oscillating said tongs back to String gripping position, means for opening Said tongs to release said String, and means for causing the withdrawal of said tong opening means at the string gripping position of said tongs.l
28. In a machine of the character described, means for feeding string comprising a pair of spring tongs for gripping a string at a definite position, adjustable means for oscillating said tongs with the string grasped therein to various points as desired and for oscillating said tongs back to the string gripping position, and means for opening said tongs to release said String near the adjustable end of the oscillatory motion.
29. In a machine of the character described, a `washer reservoir, a stepped slide for removing one washer at a time from said reservoir, means for stringinof said washer comprising a reciprocating liollow needle adapted to havespring passed therethrough for forming a string loop pendent from said washer and lmeans for reciprocating said needle, and means for reciprocating saidv slide for causing the rearmost step of said Slideto carry a washer to the stringing position, for causing the foremost step of said slide to carry a strung washer to the setting positioinand for retracting 'said slide whereby said Stringing means coacts with said slide for forwarding a washer from the reai'most to the foremost step. l
