UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUKE CHAPMAN, 0E COLLINSVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR .ro HIMSELF AND WILLIAM J. woon, 0E SAME PLAcE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,054, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE CHAPMAN, of Collinsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary with the plate which forms the head removed to show the interior. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the rotary plungers used. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of the outside, so to speak, of one of the yokes used to connect the cylindrical valves used. Fig. 6 is a side view of the inner side of the same. Fig. 7 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 8 is a detached view of one of the plunger-shafts with yokes and valves, but without the plunger itself.
The invention consists in a new method of construction for connecting and supporting the cylindrical valves used.
The letter a indicates the outer shell of the pump, formed of two intersecting hollow cylinders of equal size. I) b are the heads of the same, appropriately fastened on by screws b and having bearings and boxes b for the plunger-shafts 0 which are made to rotate with equal motion by engaging gears, one of which, c is seen. Power may be applied to either shaft. The motion is in the direction dis the in gress-pipe and d the exit. On the shafts are fixed the plungers 0, which are exactly alike, each having four parti-circular valve-plates 0 In each plunger two of these valve-seats are permanently occupied by cylindrical valves e, which are pivoted by their ends upon the round pins t" projecting from the yokes i, which fit into corresponding beds 04 made for them in the ends of the plungers, so that the outer sides of the yokes are flush with the endsof plungers.
As the plungers rotate, their surfaces are always in contact, except at the valve-seats, and these are closed by the valves themselves, each valve borne by either plunger striking into an empty valve-seat in the other plunger. The plungers just fill the inside of the pump from end to end, and the valves extend from the plungers to the outer shell.
It is not intended to claim in these Letters Patent anything which can be properly claimed under my Letters Patent, dated September 19, 1871, and numbered 119,011.
I claim as my invention- 1. The yokes i, when used to connect the the valves 0, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. The combination of the two plungers of equal diameter, each having an equal number of valve-seats, the half of which are occupied by cylindrical valves loose in their seats, and the other half of which are for the reception of the valves carried by the other plunger, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the two plungers, the cylindrical valves free to turn in their seats, and the yokes connecting the valves set into the ends of the plungers, so as to be flush with the same.
LUKE CHAPMAN.
