Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL CAINE, OF BATTLE GREEK, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEEDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,051, dated March 25, 1573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL UAINE, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Broadcast-Seeding Machines, of which the following is a specification:
This invention comprises certain improvements on a machine for distributingfertilizers and sowing seeds for which Letters Patent were granted to me under date of June 2, 1868, No. 78,428.
The present improvements consist, first, in the employment of a plate arranged underneath or in the rear-of the clearer, said. plate having a series of openings through it, and being adjustable by means of a lever to increase or diminish the capacity of the openings, and thus regulate the delivery of the contents of thehopper; secondly, in the combination with the hopper of a removable slant ipg platform arranged below the same, and provided with rows of pegs to assist in scat tering the grain.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the hopper with a portion of the front broken away to disclose the interior. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
Similar letters ofreference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents the hopper, which is umally made in about the form shown in the drawing, and is constructed with inclined sides a a, strengthened by one or more partitions, B, secured between them. The hopper is furnished at each end with a hanger, D, to receive the bearings of a feed-roller, R, which takes the place of the bottom of the hopper. The hopper is hung in any suitable manner to an axle-tree, O, carrying traction-wheels, (not shown in the drawing.) The feed-roller R is journaled in bearings in the hangers D, and these bearings are capable of adjustment by means of set-screws N N. On the projecting ends of the roller R are secured wheels P P formed with cams O on their inner faces for operating the clearer F, to be presently described. The wheel P is formed with teeth on its periphery to engage with the teeth of a pinion attached to the hub of one of the traction-wheels. The clearer F is operated by means ofa cam-wheel at each end; where by regularity and certainty of motion are insured. The cams of the one wheel are in line with the spaces on the opposite wheel, so that a reciprocating motion is given to the clean er. The projecting ends of the clearer against which the cams act may beprovided with friction-rollers, as shown. In the rear of the clearer is arranged a movable plate, E, provided with a number of Lshaped openings, G, about six or eight inches apart. Openings are also made in the hopper at its lower edge, as. shown. The plate E is provided with a hand-lever, H, pivoted within the hopper, by means of which the plate may be adjusted longitudinally to increase or diminish the capacity of the escape-orifices or close them entirely. Beneath the roller R is a removable board, I, fitted in an inclined position, as shown. The upper surface of this board is studded with rows of pins t, which assist in scattering the grain.
When plaster is to be sown the board I is removed and the roller It is lowered by means of the set-screws, to leave a greater space for the passage of the fertilizer.
The clearer is usually made in sections, the ends of which simply abut against each other, the sections being held in place by means of division-boards, as at B, which cover the joints. These boards, which divide the hopper into several compartments, also serve to materially strengthen the sides.
The cam-wheels are preferably cast with a sleeve or socket to receive the end of the roller, the parts being secured together by means of a bolt passing through the sleeve.
The general construction and operation of the machine being fully described in my former patent, to which reference has hereinbefore been made, it is not deemed necessary to repeat the details in this connection.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a broadcast-seeding machine, the adjustable plate E having L-shaped openings G, in combination with the reciprocating clearer F and the hopper a provided with escape-ori fices, when constructed, arranged, and operatin g as described.
2. Theremovable board I studded with pins 11, and arranged at an angle below the hopper a, substantially'as herein described and shown, for the purpose specified.
Witnesses: DANIEL OAINE.
