Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the engine support, the numeral 2 designates the engine, the numeral 3 reters to the fly wheel, and the numeral 4 refers to the drive shaft whereon said fly wheel is fixed. The shaft 41 has a crank 5 and a connecting rod 6 connected at one end to the piston 7 and at its other end, to the crank 5. The shaft 4 has the usual eccentric, (not shown) which opcrates the valve rods 9, 9 through the ring 10. which surrounds the eccentric and which is connected to said rods.
The numeral 11 refers to the steam pipe through which steam is admitted, under pressure, to the engine cylinder, and this pipe is controlled by a suitable out off valve 12. of conventional form. This valve has a stem 13 which projects through a suitable bearing in the valve casing and has a ratchet wheel 14 fixed thereon.
A ring 15 is keyed on the shaft 1 outside or" said eccentric, and a swinging arm 16 is pivoted at its inner end tothe periphery of the ring 15. The outer end of this arm carries a weight 17 and there is a lug 18 carried by said arm and overturned at right angles thereto. The arm is normally held against a projecting stop 19, carried by the ring, by the tension of a pull spring 20, which is attached at its respective ends to the arm and to a lug 21 carried by the ring behind said stop.
Fixed upon the shaft 4.- is an eccentric 2 around which works the eccentric ring 23 and one end of the rod 2% is connected to this ring. The other end of this rod carries the dog 25 which is pivoted thereto. A. sliding plate 26filits against the rod 24: and has long slots 21'', 27 therethrough and the pins 28, 28 are so ured to the rod and project through said slots and form bearings for said plate. A link 29 is connected, at one end, to an ear whichupstands from the dog 25, and at its other end it is connected to the near end of the plate 26. The'rod 2 1 and the sliding plate 26 have the respective lugs 30 and 31 upstanding therefrom which are connected by means of a pull spring 32 which operates to normally hold the other end. of the plate 26 against the free end of the trigger 33 which is pivoted to thorod 24;. This trigger has an overturned lug 35 which is integral therewith and which is provided for a purpose to be hereinafter stated. The dog 25 and the adjacent end of. the rod are pivoted to the lower end of the link 36. This link has a slot 37 in its upper end forming a long bearing on the valve stem 13 and the pull spring 88 is attached at one end to said stem and at its other end it is attached to said link near its lower end. In operation the fly wheel turns in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 and as it speeds up the arm 16 is relatively retarded by its inertia, and being connected eccentrically with respect to the shaft 4, as it is retarded the lug 18 is carried farther out from the center of the shaft 4 and will eventually reach the lug 35 and disengage the trigger 33 from the adjacent end of the plate 26, as shown in Fig. 5, and thereupon the spring 32 will retract said plate, aS shown in Fig. 5. This will operate through the link 29 to carry the dog 25 into engagement with the ratchet wheel 13 and as the rod 24 continues to operate said ratchet Wheel 1.3 will be turned by successive partial rotations,

Before the engine is again started the latch 35 is again manually engaged behind the adjacent end of the plate 26', as is shown in Fig. 1, which will operateto set the device in position or action before the engine is again started.

This. operates to withdraw the actuating rod and to close the valve and after the valve is closed the spring 44 will yield to permit the lug 18 to pass the lug do without breakage of parts. After the lug 18 has released the lug and 46, as t the case may be, the spring 20-will swing: the arm 16 around into its original position against the stop 19.
