HAIR-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed July 9. 1920. Serial No. 395,037.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, lVxL'rnr. ZirrEL, a citizen of Germany, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Tinpr vements in Hair-Briers, of whirh the fol lowing is a specification.
T his lIlYQIltlOll relates to devices for dry mg ladies hair and has for an object the provision of a portable device which may e connected to a suitable source of heat and arranged in a convenient manner to dry the hair in a relatively short time, without danaer of scorching or burning.
Another object is tl e provision of a hair drying device in which fresh air is mixed with the heated air and this mixture distributed over a broad area, so that the hair which may be supported above may be spread out and separated and the drying process materially advanced thereby.
Another object is the provision of novel means for supporting the hair above the device in a manner to separate and distribute the strands of the hair so that the heated air may be passed upward through these strands and the hair thoroughly dried in a safe and expeditious manner.
With the above and other objects in view the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction. to be hereinafter more fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing the heater in use, the said heater being connected to its source of fuel supply and the hair of a female person resting upon the device as in the act of drying.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the device per 80.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Fi 1 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 5 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is horizontal section on the line cheer Fig. 4.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the device comprises a casing which is made up of a base section 10, a heat conduit 11 and a heat distributing chamber 12.
The base 10 is of hollow formation and provides a heating chamber 13, one wall of which is formed with an opening 14, which is adapted to be closed by a door 15. Located within the heat chamber 13 is a suitable source of heat 16, which may be in the form of a gas or other heater, a gas heater being illustrated. If desired, an electric heating device may also be used. The burner 16 is supplied with fuel by means of a tube 17, which is connected to a gas fixture 18. Various means may be provided for supporting the device, the means shown consisting of an ordinary chair, while the user of the device is seated a short distance from the heater so that her hair is supported thereon.
The walls of the heat conduit 11 are-relatively thick and are provided with air passages 19 which extend upwardly and incline inwardly from the lower outer ends of the walls of the heat conduit to their inner upper ends, the said lower outer ends being provided with caps or hoods 20.
The heat distributing chamber 12 extends beyond the walls of the heat conduit 11 and has a flat horizontally arranged chamber which communicates with the upper end of the heat conduit so that the heat will pass from the conduit into this chamber and thereby be distributed over a relatively wide area. For the purpose of aiding in the distribution of the heat, the chamber 12 is provided with a number of spaced upwardly and outwardly inclined partitions 21 which provide heat distributing passages 22 and these passages extend upward to the upper open top of the chamber 12. This open top is covered by a screen 23 which rests upon a flange 24 extending inwardly from the walls of the heat distributing chamber 12 and upon the upper edges of the partitions 21, so that in addition to. providing heat distributing passages, these projections also act to support the'screen 23 and prevent its sa ging.
*xtending upwardly from the opposite side walls of the heat distributing chamber 12 are walls or flanges 25, the latter being provided with spaced inwardly extending flanges 26, which are provided with spaced openings for the reception of the ends 27 of transversely arranged supporting and separating bars 28. These bars are of different formation, certain of the bars being downwardly curved as indicated at 29, while others are bowed upwardly as shown at 30 and are provided intermediate their lengths with kinks 31. By reason-0f this arrangement, the strands of hair of the user of the device will be separated, a portion of the hair resting upon the downwardly curved bars 29, while otherportions of the hair will rest upon the bars 30 and be dis tributed thereover, due to the formation of the said bars. The air from the heat distributing passages may thus pass upward through the hair which is in a separated state and the operation of drying thereby greatly facilitated. By mixing the fresh air with the heated air at their point of entrance into the heat distributing chamber 12, a great volume of warm and dry air is provided for distribution through the passage of the-chamber 12. If desired, open.- ings 32 may be provided in the walls or flanges 25 to increase the circulation of air through the hair.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor 6 etails of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A hair drying device comprising a casing, said casing including a hollow base, a source of heat for said base, a vertically arranged heat conduit extending upwardly from the base, a heat distributing chamber located at the top of the heat conduit, means for supplying air to the heat conduit in advance of the heat distributing chamber, a plurality of heat distributing passages located in said chamber and means located ab ve the heat chamber to provide a hair support.
2. A hair drying device comprising a casing, said casing including a hollow base, a source of heat in said base, a vertically arranged heat conduit extending upwardly from the base, an open top of the heat distributing chamber located at the top of the heat conduit, means for supplying air to a heat conduit, a screened closure for the open top ofthe heat distributing chamber, a plurality of spaced partitions in said heat distributing chamber and providing heat distributing passages and supporting the screened closure and means located abovethe heat chamber to provide a hair support.
3. A hair drying device comprising a casing, said casing including a hollow base, a source of heat in said base, a vertically arranged heat conduit extending upwardly from the base, a heat distributing chamber located at the top of the heat conduit, upwardly extending inwardly inclined passages located in the walls of the heat conduit and extending from the lower outer ends of said walls to their upper inner ends in proximity to the heat distributing chamber, whereby fresh air will be mixed with the heated air to aid the operation of drying and means located above the heat chamber to provide a hair support.
l. A hair drying device comprising a casing, said casing including a hollow base, a source of heat in said base, a vertically arranged heat conduit extending upwardly from the base, a heat distributing chamber located at the top of the heat conduit, means for supplying air to the heat conduit in advance of the heat distributing chamber, upwardly extending side walls projecting along each side of the heat distributing chamber and transversely arranged bars extending from the side walls above said chamber to provide a hair supporfl 5. A hair drying device comprising a casing, said casing including a hollow base, a source of heat in said base, a vertically arranged heat conduit extending upwardly from the base, a heat distributing chamber located at the top of the heat conduit, means for supplying air to the heat conduit in ad Vill'lCG of the heat distributing chamber, upwardly extending side walls projecting along each side of the heat distributing chamber and transversely arranged spaced bars extending from the side walls above. said chamber to provide a hair support, said bars having diilerent curvatures and elevations whereby the supported hair will be separated to facilitate drying.
