Description

ARTURO WILLIAM WILDNER, OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA.
SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed July 22, 1920. Serial No. 398,053.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTURO IVILLIAM \VILDXER, a citizen of the Uruguayan Republic, residing at Calle Maipu 671, Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sealing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel device intended for ofiice use and consisting of a seal for stamping seals of'sealing wax, in combination with an electrical heater.
Heretofore, sealing wax has been sold in bars and for using the same, the flame 01" a match, candle or the like has been recurred to. In this way, owing to the dense smoke formed by the combustion of the resins, a clean seal of bright color like that of the rod of sealing wax employed, is seldom obtained. Besides, an excessive amount of sealing wax is usually employed and the sealing operation becomes troublesome on account of the practice required thereby, in order to conveniently perform the same and of the risk which the operator runs 1 burning himself.
These drawbacks have been eliminated by the apparatus which forms the object of this invention. The sealing wax of any desired kind and color, is prepared and sold as tablets, of diiierent shape and dimensions, adapted to those of the seal which is to be used. Thus, provision ismade for only using the exact amount of sealing wax required for each seal.
One of said tablets is placed in the desired position on the object to be sealed, whereupon the wax is softened to the desired degree by means of the electrical heater and the seal is then stamped thereon.
According to my invention, the seal is formed integral with the heater, but it will be evident that any ordinary seal may as well be employed.
By means of this novel device, any one is enabled to stamp wax seals neatly and cleanly, without smoke nor flames, and without risk of getting burned.
In order that theinvention may readily be understood, illustrative drawings have been annexed to this specification, where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electrical heating device provided with a seal for stamping wax seals, constructed in accordance with this invention.
2 illustrates a central longitudinal sect on of the apparatus! Fig. 3 is an upper plan view of the same. and
F1g. 4 is a plan view of the end of the heater, showing its heating surface.
In said drawings, 1 indicates the handle on which is mounted the conjoint of the apparatus and which carries at one. end the seal 2 for-stamping the sealing wax, while the electrical heating device is atfixedto the opposite end of the handle. Said device essentially consists of a casing 3 provided with a detachable cover 4, the bottom of the casingbeing formed with an opening, closed by means of a sheet or leaf of mica 5, so as to allow of radiation of heat but preventing contact with the'heatingelements. In the interior of said casing a plate 6 of fireproof material is arranged, surrounded by a packing of asbestos 7 and retained in position by means of a rod 8 whose ends enter into suitable recesses 9, formed in the casing. The plate or dish 6 is provided at its lower face with a series of grooves for the reception of the coils 10 which, when heated by the resistance opposed thereby to the passage of the current, constitute the heating means of the apparatus. Said elements-oi ordinary design are connected. to the current leads 11 and 12, on the former of which is insertee a contact device consisting of the terminal. 13, spring 1-1: and terminal 15, secured to the porcelain piece 16, seated within a suitable recess formed in the body part of the handle. Said recess is covered by a removable plate 17, retained in position by means of a screw 18, said plate being pro vided with an opening through which pro jects a stud 19 by means of which the spring 14 is placed in contact with the terminal 13 so as to close a circuit which determines the operation of the heater. The leads 11 and 12 emerge from the apparatus by the opening 20 and by means of an ordinary plug 21, the same may be connected tothe main 18% s of the room, in the usual manner.
T he sealing wax is conveniently prepared and purchased in the form of tablets 22, so that after insertion of the plug 21, it will be sufficient to place one of such tablets in position on the object to be sealed and apply thereto the mouth of the heater, held in a spaced relation with regard to the tablet by means of the part 23, whereupon, when depressing the stud 19, the coils 10 will become red hot and the heat radiated therefrom, Will gradually soften the sealing Wax. WVhen this has been done to the desired degree, the stud 19 is released and after raising the apparatus, the seal 2 or any other suitable seal is stamped onto the softened Wax tablet.
'Having now described my invention, I de clare that What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An electric sealing device, comprising a handle having a chamber and an opening leading therefrom, and provided With a seal at one end, a casing at the end of the handle opposite that of the seal, said casing having an open bottom closed by a heat radiating member, a heating coil in the casing, wires leading from the coil into the chamber of the handle and out through the opening thereof and adapted to be connected with a source of electrical energy, and a circuit closer mounted in the handle and operatable from the exterior thereof.
2. In an electric sealing device, a handle having a chamber and an opening leading therefrom, a casing secured to one end of the handle and having an open bottom closed by a heat radiating member, a fireproof member in the casing and having grooves in its lower face, a coil in the grooves of said member, wires connected with the coil and leading into the chamber of the handle and out through-the opening'thereo'f and adapted to be connected with a source of" electrical ei'iergy, and contact closer in the chamber of Lhehandle and operatable from the exterior thereof.
8. In an electric sealing device, a handle having a chamber and openings leading therefrom out through the handle, a casing secured to one end of the handle and having an open bottom closed by a heat radiating membeig'a fireproof member in the casing and having grooves in its lower face, a coil in the grooves of said member, Wires connected with the coil and extending into the chamber and out through one of the openings of the handle and adapted to be connected With a source oi" electrical energy, contacts in the chamber of the handle; one of the contacts being a spring and a stud mounted in the other opening: of. the handle and engaging the spring contact.
