IMPROVEMENT IN FISHING-RODS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,015, dated March 18, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. MCHARG, of Rome,county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Fishing-Rods; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing with the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitioation.

My invention consists in constructing a reelplate for fishing-rods of one piece of metal of a cylindrical or tube form, having a longitudinal depression on its surface .for inserting the foot or plate ofthe reel; and of dividing and Asplicing the rod so that such reel-plate may be placed on the rod at the proper place without destroying the proper form or elasticity of the rod.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to explain its construction and operation.

i Description of Drawing.

Figure 1 shows a perspective of metallic socket or band A with depression B and ring C for receiving the reel. Fig. 2 is a perspective of one portion of the rod, showing the conical construction at the joint. Fig. 3 shows the other portion ofthe rod with conical opening to receive the dowel D. Fig. 4L shows a cross-section of a complete joint with the metallic band having depression B for the reelplate H. Fig. 5 shows the reel and the plate upon which it rests.

-As a perfectly-constructed rod must be tapering, it is difficult to place the reel-plate secure] y on the rod without destroying its symmetry or weakening it. To avoid this objection l divide the rod into two parts, as seen in the drawing, and place them together by having the end of one part inserted into a suitable hole in the adjacent end of the other part, or in any other suitable manner to give firmness and strength to the rod.

D is the end of one part, and Dl its tenon. E is the end of the other part, with the mortise or conical opening E to receive the tenon. The ends D and E are so constructed as to conform to the inside of the reel-platefband when the end of each is inserted in such plate-band and the Whole brought together, Where they are held in their places by pins F in the band-rings C102. Sometimes, as on fly-rods, the reel is to be placed below the head or on the butt of the rod, in which case the reel-plate is slipped into the butt of the rod, the end of the reel-plate being even with the end of the rod, and it will then be unnecessary to cut or splice the rod.

Of course, instead of depressing the surface of the reel-plate, as described, the same object may be attained by cutting out a part of the tube, with or without a piece of thin metal placed thereunder, and in, perhaps, other similar modes.

I do not, therefore, desire to confine myself to this particular linode of making the plate, though I think it preferable.
