HAIR WAVER.
APPLICATION FILED AuG.23. 19H.

GEORGE W. WEAVER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIRJWAVER.
Annlcation filed August 23, 1917.
To att ifi/wm t may con cem.'
Be it known that l, Geenen lV. lVnAviiR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of. New York, have inade a certain new and useful Invention in Hair-lVaif'ers, of which the following isa specification.
The invention relates to hair wavers.
The object of the invention is to rovide a new vand improved hair waver w ich is simple and durable in construction and effective in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair waver in which a longer or shorter-wave in the haii' may be obtained as desired by the user.
A further object of the invention is to' provide a hair waver which is sanitary anddoes not injure the hair in use.
Further objects ot the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth as shown by the accompanyingdrawing, and finally pointed out by the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing, and to the figures contained therein:
Figure l is an elevation of hair wavcr embodying my invention, the saine being represented partly in vertical section.
F ig. 2 is a sectional view of same taken on the line 2 2, Fig. l, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
The same part is designated by the same reference number wherever it occurs throughout the several views.
ln accordance with my invention, I provide 'two independent short sections of flexible non-elastic strands 1 and 2, which are suitably covered by any desired material such as rubber or the like designated at 3. These independent strands areI then twisted together so as to form longitudinal extending spiral ridges and valleys as shown ini Fig. l. After the two strands are twisted together an outside cover 4 is woven over or otherwise applied thereto as clearly shown. This outside cover or stocking may be of any desired material, such as braided thread and is wovenor applied thereon with sufficient looseness to permit the two Kinclosed strands to be twisted to form variable Specification of Letters Patent.

spirals according to the length of wave to be produced in the hair.
rlfhe adjacent ends of the two twisted strands are then covered with a non-metallicand water-proof material, indicated at 5.. One method which I have found etlicient for accomplishing this, but to which method I do not desire to have my invention restricted is to dip the ends of the twisted strands into a water-proofing solution and then allowing the same to harden t ereon. In this way, the end coverings also are applied over the stocking or covering which is common to both strands, thereby. retaining the ends of the independent strands secured together side by side and avoiding the objecf tion offormingl an enlarged lump which would result if a single strand was doubled over itself.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a hair Waver with longitudinal eX- tending spiral ridges and valleys therein and that when a dampened strand of hair is wound around the same and allowed to remain fora short while, there will be produced a wave in the hair.
It willA also be noted that the length of the wave to -be imparted to the hair may be varied by simply twisting, more or less, the ends of the hair waver, thereby varying the pitch of the spiral ridges and valleys formed by the twisted strands.
It will further be observed that the novel manner of covering the twisted strands by a covering common to both of them, after they 'have been twisted together provides a smooth exterior surface throughout the entire length of the waver and prevents the loading and accumulation of dust or dirt in the crevices between the twisted strands, therebyv overcoming the objections of hair wavers which employ merely a covered wire vdoubled back upon itself and then twisted yis the manner of covering the end of the twisted. strand. By the method employed in my invention the end of the strandsvv are efficiently. protected so as to prevent them from catching in, breaking or injuring the hair.
To use the device, a strand of hair, slightly dampened, is wound around the device. The ende of the device are then bent over to maintain the heir: in position there on. A'ter a short period the device is removed :from the strand of haii? which, when combed out, contains a. weve therein.
Having thus described the objects and nature of my invention, what claim as new and useful and desife te secure by Letters Extent is:-
A hair Waver, comprising two independent ieziible non-elastic stiends twisted t0- gether to form a spiral, aV single covering applied over said assembled strands to reu tain the same in their twisted position re1a tive to each other, and to allow the pitch of 15 the spiral to be varied, and im end covering applied over the ends of the strands to bind the same together substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 20 GEORGE W. WEAVER..
