Description

J. ALTSCHULER.
FILM RACK.
APPLICATION FILED MAY7,1919.
Patented Mr. 1, 1.921.
Uitli'f@ JOSEPH ALTsciiuLE'a, or Los miennes, camroanrii.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I; Josnrii Ai/rsoiiULnn, a citizen of the United States7 residingV at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Film-Rack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates `to the art of preparing and developing motion picture films.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a rack by means4 of Ywhich the process of developing and washing' such films can be greatly facilitated. It is common practice in the4 art to provide a flat rack aroundwhich the film is wound while it is being developed. v-Tlie film, however; 'tends to change its condition when immersed in the various solutions, stretching and lcon'- V' tracting so that it has a variable length and there is danger of adjacent convolutionsoverlapping or tc'iuchingl witlipossible damage to the'film. Y j
' One'of lthe objects of my invention is to provide a film rack which Vwill ybe so constructed tliatthe `film will-be retained in av tight and uniform tension during the de'- kvelo in washin and dr ino rocess. g e
Further objects and advantages will be evidenced hereinafter. f
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only,
Figure l is a perspective view of the film rack embodying my invention. p
Fig. 2 isa section through said rack.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of one end ofVv the rack.
The rack as illustrated has rigid side members ll having central-holes 12 therein uponV i which the rack may be rotated for winding,-
and having braces 13 and fixed end members le securing the side members 11 rigidly together. Sliding in slots 20` formedin the side members 1l is a movable end member 21; this member having a cross section as shown inl Fig. 3 and being provided withk pins 22 and spiral springs 23 at either end thereof as shown in Fig. i. Wedges are provided for holding member 21 in its depressed position.
rlhe method of operation of my invention is as follows:
The wedges 30 being put in place the spiral springs 23 are forced downwardly and,l ,l the member 21is held in its lower position) The rack being mounted on a suitable hari FILM-RACK.

wound around the memberslll 21; as-
sh'own in l; the ends being secured by .any suitable means not shown. The, wedges 30 are thenremovedand the springs 2 3 exert a pressure on the member 2l7 putting an even tension on the film. A The filmv mayfnow `be sp.rings"23;fthe film being then dried upon ajtentedMar. 1,1921, Applicationiiied nay 7, 191e.V semi No.' 295,505.
the rack,v contracts; pulling the member2l back into its'original position. Whenever it is desired gto. unwindtheffilmthe wedges fare replaced *and the rackisl again mountedV on thebarand the'film unwouiid.k
. If claim as' my invention?- 1.A lm rack comprising ytwo vlrigid side l members'liaving central holes about the Aaxis of which said rack may be rotated; av sXed .end .member rigidlyL secured between: said side members; cross' braces secured between said side members ;'-a movable; end member sliding iii Islots in said side members wedges for holding said. movable end member in4 its depressed position;'a second A.fixed end member rigidly securedV inl said side members adg ace-nt to said movable end member;
and compression lsprings between `said sec-y ond fixedV end member and saidimovable end member.
2. A film rack comprising two rigid sidel members having central holes about the aXis of which said rack may-be rotated; a fixed end member rigidly secured between said side members; cross braces secured between said side members; a movable end member sliding-in slots in said side members.; a se'cond fixed-,end member l. rigidly securedfin said side members adjacent Yto said Vmovable end member; andV compression springs between said second iiXed end member and said movable end member.
` 3. A film rack comprising two rigid side ll0() i members having centralholes about the axis of which said rack may be rotated; a. fixed side members; ainovable end member sliding in slots in said side members; Awedges for #holding said movable .end Vmember in Iand compression springs between 'said second fixed end member and said movable end `1 member.
Vend member rigidly secured between said r its depressed position; a second iixedend V member rigidly secured in said side mem- .bers adgacent to said movable end-member;
iio
members having central holesabout the axis of which said rack may be rotated; a fixed end member rigidly secured between said side members; a movable end member sliding in slots in said side members; a second fixed end member rigidly secured in said side members adjacent to said movable end member; vand compression springs between said second, fixed end member and said movable end member.
5. A film rack comprising two rigid side members having central holes about the axis of which said rack maybe rotated; a iixed end lmember rigidly secured between said side members; cross braces secured between said sideniembers; a movable eiidmeniber sliding inslots in said side members; wedges Y for holding Said' movableend member iii its depressed'position; andsprings for forcing said movable end iiiemberoutwardly in said slots.' e Y Y 6. A film rack comprising two rigidside members havingV central holes about the axis of which said rack may be rotated; a'ixed endmemberfrigidly secured between said 'side members; crossbraces seeured between' "said side members; a movable end member sliding in slots in said side members; and springs for lforcing said movable `end member outwardly in said slots. I f Y 7 .-A filmrack'coniprising tworigid side members having ee'iitral'hol'es about the axis y of which said rack may be rotated; a fixed 'pend member rigidly seeuredfbetween said side members; a movable end member sliding in slots in said side members; wedges for holding said movable end member in its depressed position; and springs foiforcing said movabler end member outwar lliy in said Y slots. Y ,i
8.- A film rack comprising two rigid side members having'central holesabout the axis of which. said rack may be rotated; a fixed end member rigidly secured between said side members; a movable end member slid ing iii slots in said side members; and springs ior forcing said movable end niember outwardly in said slots.
f .i n rz 'H w e .i 9 [i fili ick compiising t o sid bu for forcing the movable bar outwardly and y means for locking the movable bar against outward movement;
In testimony whereoi7 i have hereunto set my handy at `Los Angeles; California; this 28th day of April 1919.
' JOSEPHY ALTSCHULER.'
