Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. MioHAELs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inHolding and Dispensing Devices, of which the followingisa specification.
This invention relates to devices fordispensing paper napkins one at a time, anda small'quantity of sugar, enough for one cup of coffee, tea, or other beverage, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve theconstruction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character,
WVith these and other objects in view, the inventlon consists 1n certain novel features of construction as hereinafter, shown and de-' scribed and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention. i V l Figure 1 is a sideelevation with the easing in longitudinal section.

The improved device comprises .a casing 10 preferably oblong," transversely, and mounted upon suitable stand members 11." Rising from the upper side of the casing 10 is a sugar receptacle preferably formed 'of a lower part 12 and an upper part 13, the latter having an opening in its upper side i provided with a detachable closure 14.
Connected to the casing 10, for instance by brackets 15 at its opposite sides, are sugar dispensing devices each comprising a cylindrical body portion 16 having a contracted discharge 17 and a preferably transparent extension 18 with which a conductor tube 19 is connected and leads thence to the sugar receptacle 1213. By this arrangement the sugar will flow from the receptacle 12 to the cylindrical body 16 through the extension 18.7 Preferably two or more of the sugar dispensing devices will be employed but as they are alike, the description of one will suffice for both.
Arranged within the body 16 are coacting swinging leaf valves 20 and 21, and movable through the body 16 between the valves is a spring controlled push pin 22.
At its inner end the pin 22 is connected by links 23 and 24 respectively to the valves,

The links23 and 24l-are so proportioned, that when the'pin 22 is moved into its outer m position, the valve' 20will be open and the valve 21 closedas shown in full lines in Fig. I
l, and the sugar will fill the space between the valves, and thenuwhjen the pin 22 is pushed 1n, the valves will be reversed in position, or the upper valve closed, and the lower valve opened asshownby dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this meanswhen the pin is pushed 1n the flow of sugarwill be cut OE and the oluantityfloetween the valves dischargedthrough the'contracted opening 17 and then when the pin is released, the spring associated therewith will move the'pin outwardly and restore the valves to their former. positions, whenthe sugar will again' fill the space between the valves.
Thus every time the pin is pushed in. a certain quantity of the sug-ar willfbe discharged.
' The body 16 and the spa-oe-between the valves will be so proportioned as to contain a certain predeterminedv quantity, 'for' in stance a teaspoonful, and byplacing g the tea or coffee cup beneath the dischargeend of 3 the dispenser, a teaspoonful of sugar will be deposited in the cup every time thepin is actuated.

The casing 10 contains paper napkin holding and dispensing mechanism, any required number being employed, but as the'holding and dispensing devices are preclsely allke I the description of one will sufiice for all;
Each napkin holding device comprises an inverted U-shapedplate 28 ofrelatively thin resilient metal having-an offset 29 at the end of one of its sides which engages beneath a clip 30 attached to the bottom of the casing 10 and held rigidly in position by a holding rib 31. Attached to the rigidly held side of the member'28 is. a spring 32 operating against the free side of the same. 7
The member 28 is designed to hold paper napkins in superimposed relation representpointed pin 84 upon which the napkins are 5 impaled, to-prevent more than one s napkin at a tune being removed.-
Side guard devices 35 are attached to themember 28, to prevent lateral displacement of the napkins;
A feed roller ,36 is mounted for rotation near the free end of the member 28, and the napkins are pressedagainst the roller by the .action of the spring 32 andthe resiliency of the member 28. Each" roller is provided with a turning knob 37,-asshown; i
Anopening 38 is formed in the bottom of the casinglO in vertical alinement 'with inner face'of the roller 86, and attached to the vfloor or bottom'of the casing are coacting guide plates 39 including portions depending through the opening and betweenwhich which is thus separated from the others and torn loose from the pin 3d and conducted between the guide members 39 and projected a sufficient distance below the floor'of the casing to begrasped by the fingers and fully withdrawn. The spring 32 then causes the member 28" to compress the remaining napkins against the roller ready for the next movement of the roller. Thus each'time the roller is actuated one napkin and no more will bepresented.
' The casing 10 is preferably provided with glass panels 40 in its front and rear walls.
The improved deviceis simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured of any suitable vmaterial and may be in any fanciful design. v
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and'set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, 1 v

Ina device of the class described, a casing, a U-shaped holding member rigidly supported atone side within said casing and adapted to receive a plurality of napkins in spaced relation, a feed roller mounted in said casing,.and yieldable 'means'engaging the unattached side of the holding-member and maintaining the napkins thereon against the roller.
