UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MULLALY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACI-IINES FOR MELTING SNOW.
y Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,931, dated March 18, 1873.
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J )HN MULLALY, of NewYork city, in the county ot' New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Melting Snow 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and `use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure lis avertical longitudinal section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to snow-melters,l and consists in the construction and novel ar- 1an gement of perforated cylinder-brush es having communication with a steam-boiler, substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the frame of a snow-machine constructed with my improvements. It is mounted upon tractionwheels B B, which may be .lianged, if desired, O represents a furnace and boiler for generating steam, and D a steam-drum located thereon.
E represent a series of hollow cylinders arranged beneath the furnace either laterally, obliquely, or longitudinally. These cylinders communicate by pipe connections with the drum D, and the steam conveyed therefrom is discharged through the perforations or open projections e c upon the snow.
In order to render the operation of these cylinders more effect-ive I provide them With brushes, as shown in the drawing; andthe steam being expelled thereon will heat and saturate them, thereby facilitating the melting of the snow.
The cylinders may be driven by a gear or equivalent connection with the traction-wheels or by direct communication with the steamchest, and the machine itself maybe impelled by steam or drawn by animal power.
f In a snow-melting machine, a series of perforated revolving cylinders, constructed and operating substantially as herein described, andmade either with or without brushes, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of February, 1873.
JOHN MULLALY.
