WILLIAM E. MILLEGAN, OF MGKINNEY, TEXAS.
IMPRCVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM' E. MILLE- GAN, of McKinney, in the county of Collin and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machine, of which the Vfollowin g is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of myimproved machinetaken through the line a: a' of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the under side of the rubberblock.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washingmachine which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washin g the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring them. The invention consists in the rubberblock, formed by the combination of the' rollers and bucket with the block, and in the combination of the connecting` rods, equal armed levers, and pivoted operating-lever with the rubber, the inclined wash-board, and the box, as hereinafter more fully described.
A representsa rectangular box, of suitable length, depth, and breadth. The bottom a for about two-thirds, more or less, of the length of the box A is made inclined, and has a corrugated rubber or wash-board formed upon or attached to it. To the upper part of the sides of the box A, over, or nearly over, the lower kend of the inclined wash-board a', is attached a cross-bar, B, to the middle part of which is pivoted the end of a lever, G. To the opposite sides of the lever C, at a little distance from its free end, are pivoted two equal-armed levers, D. To the ends of the levers D are pivoted the upper ends of the rods E. The lower ends of the four rods E are pivoted to the upper side of the rubber-block F, near its four corners. To cleats attached to the Aside edges of the rubber-block F are pivoted the ends of four, more or less, uted rollers, G, which are arranged one near the lower edge of said block F, and the others toward the upper part, a space being leftpbetween the lower roller and the one next to it, in which is secured a bucket, H, as shown in Fig, 3.
In using the machine the lever C is raised to bring the rubber-block F G H to the upper part of the wash-board a; a part of the clothes which have been previously soaped and placed in the Water in the box A is drawn up and spread over the lower part of the washboard a. The lever C is then moved up and down, which moves therubber F G H up and down upon the wash-board a', until the said portion of the clothes is washed clean, the bucket H, each time the lever is raised, bringing up water from the lower part of the box A to wet the clothes while bein goperated upon. When the portion being operated upon is sufficiently rubbed it is allowed to drop back into the box, and another portion is spread upon the wash-board af, and so on until all the clothes have been washed the clothes are then wrung out, and the dirty water is drawn oli' and replaced with clean water; the clothes are then put back and operated upon again in the. same manner, after which they may be wrung out again and hung up to dry.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The rubber-block formed by the combination of the rollers G and bucket H with the block F, substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it to operate in combination with the inclined wash-board a', as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the rods E, equalarmed levers D, and pivoted lever C with the rubber F G H, inclined wash-board af, and box A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
