Oran e, in'the county ofsEssexand State of New. ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signaling Systems, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to; signaling systems, and more particularly to selectively The object 'of' this invention in general I is to provide animproved organization of apparatus and circuits whereby any party on a circuit may, without assistance, call and communicate with any other partyon the same circuit without operating the signals at any of-the other waystations on the line.
In accordance with the general vfeatures of vices'of each bridge through the selectively operated device associated therewith and from a common source of energy. which is I :connected insimplex of the line through, a
high impedance retardation coil.
The drawing is a dia am of circuitsand apparatus illustrating t is invention.
. In the drawing 5 and'6 designate a pair of line Wires with which are associated waystations A and BngAt each of the 'way- 7 stations A and B is a selectively operated signal controlling device, which comprises in general a polarized operating magnet 7 a step-by-step 'elementy8 carrying a contact arm 9 and la stationary contact element 10.4: A centrally pivoted armature 11 isyadapted, to normal position under the actionlof a in response to, alternating current impulses through the magnet 7', to operate-a stepping pawl 12 to advance the step-by-step element Specification of Letters Patent."

The conthe establishment of a direct, current bridge The selectively operated signal controlling device, illustratedinjthe drawing, is acode selector of the'ty e disclosed in my copenderator thereat (whose receiver 50 is also. bridged across the linewires) that the bell across the line.wires,'which might interfere with the proper operation of the selector.
ing application, eria1.No. 98,38 1, filed Maya;
.18, 1916, Patent No. 1,343,256 issued June 15, 1920. A detaileddescriptioniof the construction and operation of this selector will be ,foundw-in this copending application,
from which it will be seen that since the se-gw lector funct ons 1n response to a code or combination of impulses, the station contacts 9 and 10 of one station only, namely the cal-led station, are; clos'ed in response to' a given combination of impulses whereby only the;
bell at the desired station operates. After the operation of: the bell at the-called station, anotheriimpulse may: he sent ,over the line to cause the elementS tO. advance one step, moving thepin 14 out of engagement with the spring-13, whereupon upon the ces sation of the impulse :the element 8- returns coiled spring 42, one end of which isse- 'curedito the shaft upon which the element,
8 is mountedand the other end of which is held infixed position.
bridge comprising two impedance coils 20 and 21, and two condensers 22 and 23, the impedance coils and condensers of each bridge being included in serial relation with respect to each other. One side of each, of the magnets 7 is connected with ground, the other being connected with the". inductive bridge at a point between the condensers 22 and 23. A battery 25 located atone end of the line wires 5 and 6 is connected in simplex of the line wires through high-impede ance, low-resistance retardation coils 27 27 and the windings 28,128 of ai'simplexicoil.
Located at each of the waystations is a key lever 30 'connected between the condenser 23 and linewire 6,"and'co6perating with two contacts 31 and 82. Contact 31 connected with ground is adapted to be opened and closed intermittently durmg the operation of the key in calling,wh1lecontact -82 connected between condenser22 and line wire 5 is adapted'to be continuously closed during the operation of the key lever 30.
The operation in this system is as follows:
Normally the condensers 22 and 23 are 1 charged to the potential ofthe battery 25. lVhen the calling key at any StatlOIl- 1s operated, the contact 32 will be closed and recausing a flow of current impulses through the windings ,of the magnets 7 alternately in opposite direction to advance the associated step-by-step elements 8 until the station contacts of a desired station are closed. The retardation coils 20 and 21 are of sufiicient impedance to talking currents so that there will be no appreciable transmission loss due to this bridge at each station. The line wiresbeing in multiple in the operation of the selectors, a much longer line with a greater number of stations can be operated with a given battery than would be possible in an ordinary bridged system.
What is claimed is: 1; In a signaling system, a metallic line circuit, aplurality of waystations associated devices.
