Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HUTCH- meson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for the Simultaneous Slitting and Artificial Selvaging of Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to machines for producing artificial selvage on fabrics while they are being slitted and has more particularly reference to devices for combining the slitting operation with that of applying a stiffening compound or paste to the edges of the slitted material.
The main object of the invention is to associate paste-applying means with slitting means insuch a way that the requisite degree of pressure for effectual severance of the web may be exerted upon the slitting members; and, at the same time, to afford adjustability of, and accessibility to, the parts.
The invention consists of the hereinafter described features of construction, arrangement of elements and combination of parts.
In the accompanying drawings, the invention is shown in a concrete and preferred embodiment in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of part of a slitting and rewinding machine to which the invention has been applied.

The material is fed to the device in any suitable manner, such for instance, as over a guide bar 7 between the backing roller 4 and score cutters 6, and thence to rewinding shaft 1. since continued movement of eccentric 13 merely places upon spring 11 a greater tension. It will thus be seen that each score cutter 6 is individually articulated and sprmg-pressed with relation to backing roller 4; and that should there be any discrepancy in the diameter f score cutters 6, eccentric 13 may be moved until that score cutter having the smallest diameter is in engagement with the backing roller 4. To prevent the formation of grooves in it by score cutters 6 the backing roller 4 is provided with a sleeve 14 of material harder than that of the score cutters.
For each cutter there is provided a pasteapplying roller 15 that may be made of fibrous or other material. These paste-applying rollers are individually articulated, and also, in a manner to be described, individually spring-pressed; and rotate in the fountain or bath in engagement with the edge of the score cutter 6. They are so mounted as to partake of the movement of the supporting member 9 when it is adjusted under the influence of eccentric 13.
At the underside of each supporting member 9 is a bearing 17 in which is pivoted, at 19, an arm 18 that supports the paste- An expansion spring 20 bears, at one end, against bracket 17 and, at its other end, against arm 20 of lever 18 and thus maintains the paste-applying roller in engagement withscore cutter 6.
I claim:
1. A machine for producing artificial selvage on fabrics while being slitted comprising: a backing roller, a plurality of cutters engaging said backing roller, an individual spring-pressed rocking support for each cutter, an individually articulated paste-applying roller carried by each support beneath the cutter and engaging with the cutter of that support, and meansfor supplying paste to the paste-applying rollers. A machine for producing artificial selvage on fabrics while being slitted comprising: a backing roller, a plurality of cutters .engaging said backing roller, an individual spring-pressed rocking support for each cutter, an individually articulated paste-applying roller carried by each support beneath the cutter and engaging with the cutter of that support, means for supplying paste to the paste-applying rollers, and a scraper carried by each support engaging with the paste-applying roller of that support.

A machine for producing artificial selvage on fabrics while being slitted comprising: a backing roller, a plurality of cutters engaging said backing roller, an individually spring-pressed .rockingsupport for each cutter terminating in a forked extension that carries the cutter, an individually articulated paste-applying roller carried by each support and engaging with its cutter at the underside thereof, a scraper carried on the upper side of each support and projecting through the bifurcated extension into engagement with the paste-applying roller of that support, and means for supplying paste to the paste-applying rollers.
6. A machine for producing artificial selvage on fabrics while being slitted comprising: a backing roller, a plurality of cutters engaging said backing roller, an, individ ually spring-pressed rocking support for each cutter terminating in a forked extension that carries the cutter, an individually articulated paste-applying roller carried by each support and engaging with its cutter at the underside thereof, a scraper carried on the upper side of each support and projecting through the bifurcated extension into engagement with the paste-applying roller of that'support, means for supplying paste to the paste-applying rollers, and means at the upper side of each support for adjusting the tension of the'scraper carried by that support.
7 A machine for producing artificial selvage on fabrics while being slitted compris ing: a backing roller, a rocking support, a cutter carried by said support and engaging with the backing roller, a paste-applying roller carried by the rocking support be-, neath the cutter, and means for supplying paste to thepaste applying roller.
8. In a fabric slitting machine an arm, a rotary cutter pivotally carried thereby, a roll movably carried by said arm for peripheral contact with said cutter, and means to retain said cutter and roll in engagement. 9. In a fabric slitting machine an arm, a rotary cutter pivotally carried thereby, a roll movably carried by said arm for peripheral contact with said cutter, and a spring operatively connecting said roll with said arm to resiliently retain them in peripheral engagement.
