TANK-FILLING VALVE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J orm W. Boznman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, and JOHN T. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madras, in the county of Coweta and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Filling Valves; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in tank filling valves and more particularly to those intended primarily for use in connection with flush tanks.
One object of our invention is to provide a tank filling valve having a renewable valve member to be replaced when worn, and to make novel provision for preventing the escape of water while renewing said valve member, thus overcoming the neces sity of cuttingv oil the flow of water through the entire supply line, as is now usually necessary.
Another object is to provide a valve of the character set forth, in which the auxiliary valve closes automatically when a portion of the main float controlled valve is removed for renewing a worn valve member.
A still further objectis to provide a valve of the type in question, which will be simple and inexpensive, easy to install, approximately silent in operation, and one in which wearing of the valve member is equalized by a novel mounting of the bell .01 valve body which carries said member.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawin s.
igure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the valve applied to a flush tank.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section with parts in elevation, showing the position of parts when the tank is-completely filled.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating the Specification of Letters Patent.

relation of parts when the valve is open for filling the tank. V
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the manner in which the supplemental valve prevents the escape of water when renewing the valve member or gasket of the fioat controlled valve.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the hollow passage member, a portion of said member being in section.
Fig. 7 is a vertical section partly in elevagkilll, of the main valve carrying body or In the drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration, we have shown the preferred form of our invention, the numeral 1 designates a hollow cylindrical passage member adapted to pass through the bottom 2 of a flush tank, the lower end of said passage member being provided with a suitable couplingii for attaching the water supply pipe 4. ny suitable means could be employed for securing the passage member 1 in place, but it is preferably provided with an integral collar 5 to rest on the tank bottom, and with a clamping nut 6.
The upper end of the passage member 1 is provided with a valve seat with which a valve member 7 coacts, said member being carried by a downwardly closing body 8. The valve member 7 is preferably in the form-of a gasket of leather or other suitable material; said gasket is received in a socket 9 in the upper end of the valve carrying body 8, and a plug 10 is threaded into said socket, against said gasket to retain the lattcrin place. The valve carrying body 8 is provided'with a suitable opening 11 exposing the lower surface of the valve member or gasket 7 for proper presentation to its seat, and in the preferred embodiment of our device, we construct said valve carrying body in the form of a bell whose wall 12 is loosely slidable and rotatable on the upper end portion of the passage member 1, being loosely guided by suitable lugs or the like 13. When the valve member 7 is unseated, the water discharges into the bell and shoulders to clamp said seat in place, a float an inwardly extending stem carried by said actuated sleeve slidable loosely on the pasplug and preventing closing of said check 10 sage member and having a closed outer end valve until said plug is removed to renew provided with a valve disk coacting with said valve disk.
the outer end of said seat, a removable plug In testimony whereof we have hereunto securing said valve disk in place, a ball set our hands.
check valve in said passage member for 00- JOHN W. BOZEMAN. action with the inner end of said seat, and JOHN T. JONES.
