Be it known that I, VICTOR MAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels for Footwear, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in heels for footwear, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character provided with a tread which may be readily renewed by the user and also provided with improved means for securing the same to a boot or shoe. 7

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a heel body 6, preferably made of aluminum and hollowed out or recessed, as indicated, for

the sakeof lightness. Hollow rivets 7 have their heads embedded in the metal forming the sides of the heel body 6, as shown. and are adapted to be inserted through holes drilled or otherwise formed through the bottom of the shoe and upset inside the shoe to permanently secure the heel body in place. This arrangement provides a simple and effective means for securing the heel body in place and one which will not seriously injure or distort the shoe or the heel body when secured in place.

tioned in the heel body, so as to intersect the front surface of the heel, thus forming a lateral entry opening to said socket. The socket thus formed is adapted to receive a flanged head 9 on a tread portion 10 of rubber, said head and tread being flattened at their forward sides to conform with the shape of the forward side of the heel body 0 and to permit of the insertion of said head 9 intothe socket 8, as indicated in Fig. 4:, and to cause interlocking between said head and socket when said tread is rotated to the position indicated in Fig. 1. As will be observed the head 9 is also of circular form to nicely fit the socket 8 and is positioned on the tread portion 10 to intersect the forward edge thereof, thus forming a flattened forward side on saidhead. The arrangement is such that the lateral opening provided in the forward side of the socket 8 is of sufiicient width to accommodate and permit of the in sertion of the head 9 thereinto when the tread portion is turned as indicated in Fig. 4.. After such insertion, the tread 10 is then rotated through an angle of substantially 90 degrees whereby head 9 interlocks with the socket 8 to hold the tread member in place on the heel and the flattened forward edge of said head coincides with the forward face of the heel to form a smooth continuous surface as indicated. By this arrangement, the tread member may be readily removed or re placed and a secure engagement with the heel body'effected. At its rear upper portion the tread 10 is provided with an upstanding locking lug or projection 11, adapted to seat in a corresponding recess 12, to lock said tread against rotation on the heel body, but permit of its ready removal due to the flexibility of the rubber of which it is made. A reinforcing steel bar 13 is embedded in the forward edge of the head 9 to reinforce the same and more securely lock the same in engagement with the socket 8, as shown.

VVhileI have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :i-

1. The combination of a permanent heel body arranged to be secured to a boot or shoe and provided at its bottom with a socket having a lateral opening leading thereinto;

a tread member provided with a head in sertible laterally into said socket through said opening; and interlocking elements on saidhead and socket arranged and adapted substanshoe and provided at its bottom with a substantially circular socket positioned therein to intersect the forward face of said body to form an entry opening; a tread member provided with a substantially circular head fiattened'at its forward side and insertible rearwardly intosaid socket through said opening; and interlocking elements on said head and socket arranged and adapted to interlock upon relative rotation, substantially' as described.

The combination of a permanent heel body arranged tobe'secured to a boot or shoe and provided at its bottom with a substan tially circular socket positioned therein to intersect the forward face of said body to form an entry opening; a tread member provided with a substantially circular head flattened at its forward side and insertible rearwardly into said socket throughsaid opening; interlockingelements on said head and socket arranged and adapted to inter lock upon relative rotation; and a bar embedded in the forward portion of said head to reinforce the juncture of'said head with said tread, substantially as described.

5. The combination of a permanent heel body of comparatively hard material, 'arranged to be secured to a boot or shoe and provided at its bottom with a socket in substantially horseshoe form, and opening'at the forward side of said heels body; and a tread member of comparatively soft mate provided at its bottom with a socket in substantially horseshoeform and opening at the forward side of said heel body; a
