CROWN-BLOCK FOP WELL-DRILLING APPABA'IS.
Bpecicatlon o! Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1.5, 1921.
Application lied September 15, 181B. Serial No. 323,727.
1' 'o all 'wlw/nI 'it may concern Be it known the-t I, W'Amini G'. VREELAND, e citizen of the United States,- rosiding et Chattanooga, in. the county of' Ham` ton and State of Tennesseqheve invented certain new and useful Improvements" in Grown-'Blocks for VVellLDrilling A pnrutus; and I do declare the following toll): clear, and exact description; oi the invention, such us will enable others skilled; in the nrt to .which it appertnins to -mnke and use the seme, reference being Vhad tothe accom'- pnnying drawings, und tothe letters n nd igures oil" reference merked'thereon, which form e part of this specification.
M invention relates to' crown blocks 4for oil erricks. It has forits primary object to provide un improved construction for spacing eport and clamping together Vand the beams which support theshafts on which the shea-ves nremounted; and also to provide en improved-'construction o; which the same is mounted ond merinerof` holding theshe'eve Asheftin position on-th'ebenms. Tothe elccomplishment -oithe foregoing and such other objects vns may hereinnit'er appear the invention consists inthe features hereinniter described :md thensou rbt to be clearly de fined by the claims, relerence being had to the nccorn .unyin drawing'forming n Aport hereof 'um in w ieh''V Figure l is o 4pien view olf4 n crownbloek 4 constructed in ecoordenceiviiththe present invention, nseven pull`e crown block'bein'g selected 'for purposes o illustration;
Fig. 2 iso side View of Fig. 1, one o sheeve show the oiling meansy the Fig. 3 isl en end viewof thecrown block,4
one of the sheaves and its shaft and its .snpporting beams beinlg in section.
In thedrewingt e beams 1 of the crownblock are five in number and formed of I meto). bars or beams with two offthe beams extended 'forward of the others to receive the send line shextve es illustrated. The beams are spaced veport by spacer-frames 2 inserted ybet-Weenthebeems et their ends so that the corners of thefrnmes will fltin the `angles of the webs endenges of the beams as shown inFg. 3, the. beams nndgspacerf 4frames being tied together by doublemeaded bolts Bupessed through the beams end spacer@ e a ful-l,
hubs and .shet being sectionedtoV4 irnmes.. The s acer-frames form a quedrangular brace Jetween the beams nt their ends and having their corners fitting in the angles betweenthe webs and lianges of the bee'ms and securedby relatively long double heeded bolts tothe beams, e. very strong, stzible and braced structure is formed.
@n top 4of theIbenms rest the shafts which support the safnddine sheeve 5, the
casing sheaves@ and thedrillfnw line sheeve '4'. Asench of these shafts' has the seme feetnres of construction end is attached to the beams in the some manner, the some designating lreference numeral will be used for euch. The shafts nre designated by the numerals 8. Ent-h shaft is cored with o, cenf trnlhole 9,- nnd et the ends with angulurly disposed holes 10 designed to receive the engnlnrly disposed hook-bolts 1.1. which will sccure the'shnftsto the Ibeams, the lower por tions of the holes 10 being square oren ulor inA crosssection tol prevent the hoolrebo ts 11 4romtnrm'ng as their nuts' nre tightened. The shafts nrejormed with :t centrally en- )urged portion. l2 which will be machined be flattened so to sont firmly on the top oi the beams, :ind the under portion of the enlnrgernent 12 ornis at each4 end thereof n shoulda-r1?, against which will abnt the in'- ner edges' of` the top Hnnges ofthe I beams on which the shafts rest. When the shafts are' '.ormedlnnd fitted as described 'and the singularly dis osed hook-bolts are applied vwith then' hoo r ends gripping the flanges of the-I beams and their' nuts 14; are tightened u p the bolts will tend to drew on or pull the -befuns one-'toward the other with the edges of the `'top flan es oi" the beams bearing :n.geinstthe shou ders on the shafts so that any shock transmitted to one beam or any tendency of one benin to buckle is transferred toand resisted bv the other beom on which the shzit rests. nder this construction all thebeems of the crown-block are tied together' by ineens of the sheeve or pulle shafts and their attaching hook-bolts ns we l as by the spscing-frmnes end-their securing bolts at opposite ends of the beams and thus n very strong end durable structure is provided. When the nuts of the hook-bolts are loosenedthe sheeve end its shaft may be positioned in the I beams endthen securely locked or clamped in position by tightening the nuts on the bolts.
Each pulley or sheave is formed with a hollow hub 15 divided by a central partition 16 with communicating parte 17 and is provided with a bronze bushing y18 to fit the ineehined ei'ilargement oi.' the shaft. The bushing is formed with recesses or transverse openings I9 to receive a fibrous motorini 20 which will bear against the machined enlargement of the shaftyand receive oilfrom the hollow hnbof .the shea-ve to which the oil may be supplied Ythrough a capped opening 2l so as to lubricate the boerin surface be tween the-bushing and its sha. t.
I- have illustra-tod and described the preferred details of construction vof the various parte but it is to be understood that changes may be madetherein and essential features ofv the invention retained.
Havingde'scribed 4my invention and set forth its merits what I claim is:
l. .A crown-block comprising parallel beams, a. sheave sustaining; shaft resting upon the beams and formed with shoulders constitutin f abutments for portions o the` bea-ms, an( bolts extending nnvularly in opposite directions through the s eave sustaining shaft and engaging-upper side portions ing the bolts'to tie together the shaft and beams.
parallel shaft 4and beams to ether.
' beams with the 4,crown-bloc comprising parallel flanged beams, a spacing frame'between the corners of the frame fitting of the beams', and means-for tighten-V in theangle of the webs and flanges of the beams to form a quadrangular brace, and tie bolts passin through the beams and spacing-frame or tying the frame and beams together and prevent movement of the quadrangular brace.
e. A crown-block comprising parallel flanged beams, a spacing-frame between the beams, bolts Passing throughthe beams and frame for tyinv thesame together, a sheave sustaining shai; resting uponv the beams and having a,- shoulder constitutnv an abutment for :the flanged portion of t e beams, and bolts Jassin angularlyt' in op osite clirec- 60 tions t roug said sha and he d. in clampingen 'agement with the upper flanged portionl o the beam.Y
5'. A. crown-block l flanged beams, a. spacing-frame'between the 65 beams, bolts passing through the beams and 'frame for tying the 'same together, a. sheave sustaining shaft restinvupon the beams; and bolts passing angular y in opposite .directions through said shaft and held in clamping engagement with the u per portionsof the'beains und serving to ltie tbe shaft und beams together.
6. A crown-bloelr r comprising 4parallel flanged beams, a sheare sustaining shaft restlnw upon the vbeams andformed with a centra ly enlarged portion, -asheave formed with a hollow hub and internal lonshin ,litted to the enlarged central portion o? the shaftnind bolts passing an ularly in oppo- 20 site directions through the s aft and having clamping engagement with the u )per flanges oi the beam to draw the enlarge portion oi the shaft and the flanges of the beam one toward the other. v Y
