SOLE-SKIVING' MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2 1, 1919. Serial No. 278,799.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JAMES H. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole-Skiving Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the manufacture of shoes, it is often desired to make a shoe of a size somewhat longer than sole blanks on hand, and in order to use the shorter blanks, the so-called dutching process is employed. in this process the blank is skived through at its rear portion on a long scarf, and the scarf having been cemented the parts are moved relative to each other, and then pressed to gether to form a blank of a size longer than the original.
This invention seeks to provide a machine for skiving the blanks for this purpose to produce a long, even scarf in an expeditious manner, and in which the skived portions will leave the machine convenient to the operator so that the portions of each blank may be re-associated to form the longer blank with a minimum of time and effort. For this purpose the machine is arranged so that the rear end of the blank is pushed into the machine from the front by the operator into contact with a gage, and during the skiving the blank is fed in the reverse direction toward the operator so that both parts of the severed blank leave the ma chine in convenient relationship to each other and to the hands of the operator.
This invention also provides means whereby the proper placing of stock in position. serves to initiate the actuating mechanism to perform the skiving operation.
Further objects and advantageous details of construction will appear rom a more complete description of embodiments of the invention disclosed in the accompanying drawings in which,-

Arepresents the machine head for supporting the operative mechanism, which is suitably carried on a work bench or similar support. An upstandin bracket B at each end of the machine carries bearings for an actuating shaft C and a shaft D above and parallel thereto. Loosely carried on shaft 0 is a sleeve 1, having at each end thereof forwardly extending arms 2, 2% Similar arms 3, 3 are carried on the ends of a sleeve 4 loosely carried by the shaft D. Arms 3 and 3 are provided with alined bear ngs 5, 5 at their free ends for a shaft 6 which carriesrigid therewith, between the arms 3 and 3, the feed roll 7. 11, these upper ends being journaled on cams 12 (only one being shown) fixed to a shaft 13 mounted in hearings in arms 3, 8 At one end shaft 13 carries a lever 14-, and at the other a fastening nut 15. Rods 11, 11 project downwardly through the 2, 2 and into the base of the machine where they pass through lugs 16, 16*, their positions therein being adjustable by means of nuts 17, 18; 17 18. Surrounding rods 11, 11 between the arms 2 and 3, and 2 and 3 are suitable coil springs 19, 19 Similar springs 26, 20 bear on the under side of arms 2, 2 and on the upper side of nuts 21. Carried also by arms 2, 2 and extending across the machine is a plate 22 which is carried on the bracket 23, preferably integral with the arms 2, 2*. Rearwardly of plate 22 is an adjustable plate 2% mounted on bracket 23 by a pin 25 passing through slot 26 in the bracket. Plate 24 has an adjustable gage 26 having a work contact element 27 at its forward end.

30 which meshes with a similar pinion 31 on shaft D. Pinion 31 meshes with a gear 32 carried by shaft. 6, and of the same size as gear 29. Belt pulley E is loosely carried on shaft C and has projecting fron the hub thereof a lug 33. A. coil spring 45 surrounding sleeve 39 normally urges the latch. member 4:3 into engagement with head 4! "Loosely carried by shaft 8 is a collar lb having a cam e7 integral therewith at its outer end. Collar and cam 46, 47 more siliently held to rotate with shaft 8 by means of a coil spring e8 bearing at one end against cam 47 and at the other against an adjustable collar 4-9 carried by pin 50 having anut 51 thereon by which the compression of spring 48 may be regulated. Arm 40 carries a pin 52 at its free end Whichengages the circumference of cam 47.
A stationary knife 53 is carried in front of the machine in a horizontal plane having a cutting edge 54 opposite the space between feed rolls 7 and 8. Knife 53 is adjustable by means of square-headed bolts 55, 55 working in suitable slots therein, and may also be provided, if desired, with adjusting screws 56, 56. In Fig. 4 it is seen that the feed roll 7 is of special form, having a cut- E'vVdYlDOIlZlODfl'OIIl 0 to a; a spiral gripping portion of constantly increasing size from a t0 b;,and a substantially concentric por tion b-c.
The operation of the device above described is as follows; A sole to be scarfed. is inserted from the front of the machine while it is stationary, at which time the cut-- away portion caof roll 7 is downward, thus. allowing the stock to be freely inserted between rolls 7 and 8, the "stock being in sorted until it touches the contact element 2'? of the gage 25. The operator then depresses the treadle, withdrawing the latch 42 from behind the head 4:4 of pin 36, which is immediately projected by spring 37 into the path of log As soon as lug 33 con-. through the meshing gears and pinions the feed rolls 7, 8 rotate in a direction to force the work parallel to the knife toward the operator. Cam 47 holds the latch retracted during the several revolutions of shaft. C required to complete one revolution of the feed rolls, whereupon if the treadle is released the machine stops. As the point a on roll 7 strikes the work the feed motion begins, and as roll 7 continues to rotate the stock is pressed down farther and farther until the point P5 is reached. it'is thus seen that as the feed begins, the knife 53 starts to cut from the lower face of the material, and when the point b is reached the stock has been forced against the edge of the knife and in a direction transverse of the direction of feed until the knife emerges from the upper surface, thus skiving the sole on a long scarf into two portions. The feed portion 72- 0- of roll? insures that the stock is fed completely out of the machine even when the scarf terminates before the end of the stock is reached. The forward scarfed portion is fed out above the knife, and the rear portion is fed out below the knife, both convenient to the operators hands, so that they may be reassembled and put in a convenient position to be stuck together again with the parts somewhat separated as shown in Fig. 6 to make the blank.

8, 9 and 10 in which the proper positioning of the work in the machine serves to actuate the clutch mechanism without the necessity of depressing the treadle. In this modification the plate 26 carries thereon an adjustable plate 60 in place of the adjustable gage 25.' Plate 60 carries a slidable gage 61 normally urged forward by a spring 62 engaging between lugs 63 andb l on the and plate respectively. A bell crank lever 65 is pivoted on plate 60. the arm 66 of which engages a pin 67 carried by gage 61, so that the sliding of the gage 61 will rock bell crank lever 65. The other arm of this bell crank lever is pivoted to a link 68, which in turn is pivoted to a rod 69 slidably mounted in a guide 70 carried by the frame of the machine. At its outer end rod 69 carries a trip member 71 which rotate to a limited extent thereon. Trip 71 carries an abutment 72 adapted to be urged into contact with a similar abutment 73 fixed to rod 69 by means of a coil spring 74:, one end of which engages trip 71, and the other end of which is fast to a collar fixed on rod 69. Drive wheel E carries the contacting lug 33 as before, and is also provided with a lug 76. Sleeve 39 carries the latch member d2,whicn actuates the sliding pin 36 as before described and also carries an arm 77 having an upwardly turned end'78 in the same plane transverse of the shaft as lug 76; Trip 71,
is normally held out of this plane by means of spring 62, but on pressure of stock against age 61 thereby rocking bell crank lever 65, rod 69 will be projected to the right, thus bringing trip member 71 into tlns plane. It is seen therefore, that if stock placed in the machine is pushed against the gage 61, member 71 coming between the lug 76 and part 78, will be contacted by lug 76 on the rotation of drive wheel E, and will rock member 71 outwardly pushing on extension 78 and rocking arm 77 downwardly which, through sleeve 39, will serve to retract the latch $2 from behind pin 36 and the machine w ll start as before described. As the rolls grip the stock, it is fed away from the gage 61, which immediately returns to its former position, retracting member 71 out of the plane of lug 76, whereupon the mechanism Wlll stop after one revolution of the feed rolls.
Having thus described certain embodiments of my invention, though it is evident that many changes might be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, what is claimed is,-
1. In a skiving machine, a pair of feed rolls, and a skiving knife mounted wlth its edge adjacent to the bite of said rolls, one of said rolls having a cut-away portlon to admit of stock being inserted freely between said rolls and a spiral gripping surface whereby said stock may be forced against and across said knife edge.
2. In skiving machine, a pair of feed rolls, a skiving knife mounted with its edge adjacent to the bite of the rolls, one of 531d rolls having a cut-away portion to admit of stock being inserted freely between said rolls, and a back gage for determining the extent of admission of stock between said rolls, said rolls being arranged to feed stock against said knife edge and away from said gage.
3. In a skiving machine, a pair of feed rolls, a skiving knife mounted with its edge adjacent to the bite of said rolls on one side thereof, and a back gage opposite the bite of said rolls on the other side thereof, one of said rolls having a cut-away portion to admit of stock being inserted freely between said rolls and into contact with said gage and one of said rolls having a spiral feeding portion for feeding stock against and across said knife edge whereby said stock may be severed on a long diagonal scarf.
4. A feed mechanism comprising co6perating feed members acting at certain times to admit of stock being inserted freely therebetween, agage arranged to be contacted by stock so inserted, and mechanism initiated by pressure of stock against said gage for actuating one of said feed members to feed said stock away from said gage.
5. A machine for scarfing leather having, in combination, a fixed knife, a pair of work feeding elements arranged normally to permit movement of the work therebetween in a direction away from said knife, means for actuating said feeding elements to grip the work and to move it toward said knife, and mechanism operating automatically upon movement of the work to a predetermined distance in the direction away from said knife to initiate the operative movement of the feed elements.
6. A machine for scarfing sheet material having, in combination, a pair of feed rolls, a skiving knife mounted with its edge adjacent the bite of said rolls, said rolls being arranged normally to permit the insertion of material therebetween and in a direction away from said knife edge, a gage for determining the extent of such insertion, and mechanism operative automatically upon contact of the material with said gage for initiating a movement of said rolls to grip and feed the material against the knife edge.
7. A feed mechanism comprising a pair of feed rolls, one of said rolls having a cutaway portion whereby stock may be inserted freely between said rolls, a gage opposite the bite of said rolls, driving mechanism for said rolls, and control means for said mechanism actuable by said gage whereby pressure of stock against said gage actuates said mechanism to operate said rolls.
8. A skiving machine having, in combi nation, a pair of cooperating feed members, a knife mounted with its edge adjacent the bite of said feed members, a gage element located upon the opposite side of said feed members from the knife, said gage being mounted for movement toward and from said feed members, actuating means for said feed members, and connections between said gage and actuating means whereby movement of said gage away from said feed members serves to initiate operative actuation of the latter.
9. In a skiving machine, in combination, a. pair of cotiperating feed rolls, a knife blade arranged with its edge adjacent the bite of the rolls, a support upon the opposite side of the rolls from the knife and adjustable toward and from the rolls, a gage element slidably carried by said support, resilient means urging said element toward said rolls, and mechanism actuable automatically by movement of said gage element away from the rolls for initiating the feeding action of the latter. 7

In a machine of the class described, operating mechanism, a gage, a driving mechanism, -a clutch comprising a lug" on said driving mechanism, a second lug on said operating mechanism normally projecting into the path of said first lug, a latch 10 for holding said second lug retracted out of the path of said first lug, a third lug on said driving mechanism, means toretraet said latch from its holding position and a member arranged to be positioned by said gage between said means and said whereby said driving mechanism may actto retract said latch.
