K Be it known that l, lllrnnnn GARFIELD tutori-inni, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of llichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State oi2 Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rictuating Devices for Temper- Screws,V oi which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to temper screws used in the drilling oit wells and more par ticularly to a device 'tor actuating the same. In the adjusting or' temper screws serious injuries have been inflicted on the operators by reason cfr' the fart that in the normal operation of a drill cable it continually twists first in one direction and then the other impart-ing` a similar movement to the temper screw which in turn causes a jerking` or lateral movement of the rod or polo usually employed for adjusting the temper screw there being a rigid connection between the pole and screw. As the operator pushes the pole around a temper screw in eiiecting its adjustment7 the pole when jerked in the direction ot the operator is liable to strike the operator with great force, thus endering the operation extremely dan- Lgerous.
It is the purpose of my invention to eliminate that danger by providing` a device which prevents the jerking movement of the pole in the' direction oiE the operator, while at the same time locking the pole to the temper screw in its forward movement so that the proper adjustment can be effected.
l will describe one :form of device einbodying my invention and will then point out the novel Yfeatures in claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings and particularly to Fig. 1 the temper screw here shown is or" standard construction, the same comprising a sleeve S threaded internally to Specification of Letters Eatent.

The actuating device for this temper screw comprises a collar K carrying,` set screws A for securing the collar to the sleeve S as will be hereinafter described. At a point intermediate its ends, the collar 1i carries a ratchet wheel W which is integrally formed with the collar or keyed thereto so that the two move together. The detailed construction of the ratchet wheel is clearly shown in' Fig. 4t. Rotatablv mounted upon the collar K at a point beloiiV the ratchet wheel di is an actuating member designated generally at M, such member in the present instance comprising, as shown 1n Fig. 5, a yoke 15 provided with an opening 15a for the reception of the collar K. The yoke 15 is provided with tapered end portions 15b and integrally formed with such portions are sockets 16 and 16=L designed for the reception of poles P and P respectively, as shown in Fig. l. As shown in Fig. 3, theactuating` member M is confined upon the collar K by a ring R, such ring being secured to the lower end of the collar by a plurality of bolts B. rEhe detailed construction oi the ring R is clearly shown in Fig. 6 wherein it will be seen that such ring is flat and or suoli diameter that when in its applied position upon the collar its periphery will project beyond the periphery of the collar and thus serve to confine the yoke 15 thereon.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, one tapered end portion 15b of the yoke 15 carries a pair ot posts 17 and 17a connected at their upper ends by a plate 18. Pivotally mounted upon the posts 17 and 17aN are pawls L and L', respectively. These pawls L and L are capable of occupying a locking position wherein they engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel Vif to cause the actua-ting member and Vratchet wheel to move together, and a re leasing position wherein the actuating mem-- ber. moves independently of the ratchet wheel. To lock the pawls in either oi' these positions, provide each pawl with a locking pin 19 or 19a which is adapted to engage recesses 20 formed in the tapered portion 15b as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 7. Each locking pin 19 is urged downwardly by a spring` 21 mounted within a sleeve 22 and through which the pin is adapted to slide7 such pin being provided with a collar 23 against which the spring bears and forces the pin downwardly. The detailed construction of these parts is clearly shown in Fig. 7.
By virtue of this arrangement it will be seen that when the pawls L and L occupy such positions that the pins 19 and 19a are in registration with any of the recesses 20,' the springs 2l will automatically force the pins into the openings thereby effecting a locking olf the pawls. In the present instance, the recesses 20 are so arranged and of such a number as to effect a locking of the pawls in releasing and locking positions so that by manipulating the pins either one or the other of the pawls may be caused to engage or disengage the teeth of the ratchet wheel W.
In operation, the operator grips one ot the poles P or I and by traveling around the temper screw eii'ects a rotation of the actuating .member about the collar K as a center. F or the sake or" description let us assume that the pawl L is locked in the releasing position while the pawl .L'occupies a locking position in which it engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel W. Now by rotating the actuating lmember in a counter# clockwise direction as when viewed in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the actuating mem ber is locked to the ratchet wheel, and the collar K being locked to the sleeve S through the medium of the set screws A, it is obvious that a rotation of the sleeve S will be effected to adjust the shank H. Now should the collar K be jerked in the direction of the operator under the twisting ac tion of the cable C as has been previously explained, the pawl L under the retrograde movement of the ratchet wheel VV will be drawn out of engagement with the latter thereby disconnecting the actuating member from the ratchet wheel and thereby pre venting the actuating member' from being thrown in the direction of the operator. When the pawl L is thrown out of engage ment with the ratchet wheel W it is moved te such a position that its pin 19 moves into one of the recesses 2O and ^thereby locks the' pawl in its releasing position.
Although. I have herein shown and described only one form oi device embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modilications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What l claim is:
l. A device of the character described comprising, a collar, set screws carried by the collar, a ratchet wheel fixed to the collar, an actuating member comprising, a yoke loosely embracing the collar, sockets formen on the yoke for the reception of poles, a ring detachably secured to the sleeve for conining the yoke thereon, pawls pivoted on said yoke and capable of occu pying a locking position wherein they engage the teeth ot said ratchet wheel and a releasing position wherein they disengage the ratchet wheel, and spring pressed pins carried by said pawls and engageable with said yoke for locking the pawls in releasing` or locking position.
2. In combination, a temper screw, a member for rotating the temper screw in either direction, and means interposed between the screw and member for operatively connecting the two when the member is moved in one direction or the other and for disconnecting the two when the temper screw is moved in a direction opposite to the movement of the member.
3. In combination, a temper screw, a member for rotating the temper screw, and pawl and ratchet wheel interposed between the screw and member for operatively connecting the two when the member is moved in one direction and Jfor disconnecting the two when the temper screw is moved in the direction opposite to the direction ot' movement of the member.
4.. A device of the character described comprising, a collar, an actuating member rotatably mounted on the collar, a ratchet wheel fixed to the collar, pawls pivoted to the actuating member, and means for locking the pawls in predetermined positions tor the purpose described.
5. A device ot the character describedr comprising, a collar, a ratchet wheel xed to the collar, an actuating member rotatably mounted upon the collar and openings formed therein. reversely disposed pawls pivoted on the member, and spring pressed locking pinscarried by said pawls and engageable with the walls of said openings for locking the pawls in predetermined positions.
