Description
R. M. TAYLOR. PIPE BOWL AND IMPROVED PROCESS OF M AKING THE SAME. 20-
APPUCATION FILED APR. 23, I9
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
ROSS M. TAYLOR, OF ALLEGAN, MICHIGAN.
PIPE-BOWL AND IMPROVED PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed April 23, 1920. Serial No. 376,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, Ross M. TAYLon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegan, in the county of Allegan and State of h lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PipeBowls and Improved Processes of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved pipe bowls and to the improved process of making the same.
The main object of the invention is to provide a pipe bowl made of wood or similar material with a suitable absorbent lining that shall be durable and effective in use. I
Objects relating to more details will definitely appear from the description to fol.- low.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention, with the means for producing it, is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification in which:
Figure I is a perspective of a pipe made according to my invention.
Fig. 11 is a detail sectional. view through the bowl of the pipe in place on the work table of a drill press, taken on a line corresponding to line 22 of Figs. I and Ill.
Fig. 111 is a detail view of the spinning head or mandrel located in a drill press for carrying out the process of making my improved pipe bowl.
Fig. IV is a detail view showing how the spinning head or mandrel is forced into the bowls to shape and conform the cement or plastic material and finish the surface thereof.
In the drawing, similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional. view is taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Considering the numbered parts of the draw ng, 1 is the wood shell of a pipe bowl containing an annular groove 2 near the top thereof. 3 is plastic material which may be either Portland cement or plaster of 331118 or a mixture of the two or other plastic mixture. This is introduced into the bowl of the pipe comparatively wet and in a consistency to be readily molded. The bowl is then placed under the chuck 6 of a drill press carrying a suitable mandrel, having a spinning head 5, .i itably flanged at 5. lhe pipe bowl is supported in a suitable perforated plate aton the drill press table. The head is spun by the drill press and forced into position and effectively compacts and conforms the plastic material to place, and by the rotation and rubbing perfects and finishes the inner surface thereof, so that when the same has been set, a pipe is produced having a lining of porous material well adapted to absorb moisture from the tobacco and having a firm finished inner surface.
llaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A 1. In a pipe bowl the combination of a wooden shell with an interior annular depression toward the top, a lining of cement or similar plastic material suitably conformed to said bowl and its inner annular depression and having a compacted dense inner surface, as specified.
2. The process of manufacturing a wooden pipe with plastic lining consisting in introducing the lining material into said pipe in a moist but semi-solid condition and conforming the same by a properly shaped spinning mandrel to compact the material. and finish the inner surface thereof.
1 witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two wit-
