UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. BOSE, OF WATERLOO, TOY/A.
POWER-ACTUATED HAIR-CLIPPER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. WILLIAM T. Rose, a citizen of the United $t-ates of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Actuated Hair- Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in power-actuated hair-cutters, and the object of my improvement is to supply for the use of barbers and other persons a device of th1s class, comprising power transmission mechanism of a simplified, convenient kind, having few parts, light, compact and easily assembled or disassembled.
This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the under part of my improved poweractuated hair cutter with parts removed or broken away, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the means employed in said device for reciprocating the movable cutter member.
In said drawings, similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The hair cutting device shown is of a well known type, having a pair of coacting dentated cutting members or plates 6 and 8, of which the plate 6 is detachably fixed upon a shank or body 2 by screws 16, said body being integral with an elongated handle 1, the other cutting plate 8 being mounted to be reciprocated across the plate 6.
The cutter 8 is positioned between said fixed cutter 6 and a removable cap-piece 12 opposite, said cap-piece being secured to said body 2 by a flat-headed screw 11. having thereon a wing-nut not shown, engaging the outer face of the cap. The cutter-plate 8 has rectangular openings 9 to receive smaller rectangular studs 7 on the plate 6 slidably to limit its scope of movement or reciprocation, and also has a rectangular recess 10 medially located in its inner transverse edge.
The means for reciprocating the cutter plate 8 are housed in a small oblong boxing 4 having two spaced transverse partitions 22 and 25 and a terminal wall 34, said partitions and wall having medially-located 1011'- gitudinally-alined circular orifices or bearing-openmgs '30,
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t 15 9 Application filed May 29, 1919.
Serial No. 300,573.
The boxing has an orificed threaded lug 5 to receive a screw 3, which also traverses a transverse hole in the body 2. Besides this means for securing said boxing to said body, a strap is passed about the handle 1 and fastened to the boxing by screws 36. The boxing is open at the bottom, but provided with slideways 33 to receive a sliding-cover 32 which may have a thumb-notch 34..
The means for reciprocating the plate 8 comprises connected elements operated by a shaft 2e within the boxing and a powerdriven flexible cable 81. Of these, the numeral 14L denotes an arm projected forwardly from a sleeve 15, the latter rockingly mounted on said screw 11, and this arm has a depending detent 13 which movably and detachably engages the rectangular notch 10 in the plate 8. Another arm 17 of semicircular form also extends from said sleeve 15 but in a general opposite direction and has a terminal head 37 provided with an up and down slot 18.
The shaft 2% has a diminished portion traversing the bearing-orifice in the parti tion 22 and supplied with a disciform extremity 21 having an eccentric crank-pin 20 covered by an anti-friction sleeve 19, and this pin and its sleeve 19 are received within the slot 18 to rotate as well as have a limited sliding movement therein. The other end 26 01": said shaft 24, is somewhat enlarged, socketed, and slotted at 27 on one side to detachably receive a head 29 and spline 28 on a helical wire cable 81, which latter may be rapidly rotated by mechanism, not shown, such as an electric motor provided with con necting step-down gearing.
lVhen. the cable 31 with the connected shaft 24 and crank-pin 20 are rotated, the pivoted member lat- -17 receives continuous rocking motion, imparting to the cutting-plate 8 a rapid reciprocation of short length and very effective in use. The slot 18 in the head 37 of the arm 17 permits the necessary free play to the contacting elements without friction or binding.
All the elements of this device are simple, and readily assembled or disassembled for inspection, cleaning or repairing. The device has a minimum of parts, hence is light and compact, and handy for manipulation, and may be quickly connected to or separated from the power-plant.
Having described my invention, what I ering the saidterminal opening spacedfroni the housing, a blade mounted between the housing and said serrated plate, a shaft r0- tatably mounted'in' said shaft-bearings, and mechanism operatively connected between said shaft and said blade adapted to reciprocate the blade transversely when the shaft is rotated.
Si ned at Waterloo, Iowa, this 12th day 20 of hiay, 1919.
WILLIAM T. ROSE.
