UNITED STATES ANTHONY E. WALLER, OF EDGEWOOD, RHODE ISLAND.
EAR DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed September 3, 1919. Serial No. 321,385.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY E. IVALLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Edgewood, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ear clamps, ear drops and the like by which imitation gems or ornaments may be readily attached to the ear of the wearer, and the Object of this invention is to provide such a clamp or the like with means for retaining a non-metallic member to which a gem or ornament may be readily secured by the use of cement thus greatly reducing the cost of securing imitation gems in position on devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1- is a side elevation partly in section illustrating one form of ear clamp with my improved cup-shaped ear engaging member in section, and showing a non-metallic body as secured in the cup.
Fig. 2- is a detail illustrating a non-metallic body which is secured in the engaging cup-shaped member of the clamp.
Fig. 3- is a front view of the ear clamp shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the stem portion of the clamp, which is preferably formed of wire and is herein shown as being bent in a loop form to pass around beneath the lobe of the ear. The front end 11 of the wire is preferably struck and swaged out into a flat disk which is drawn up into cup form as at 12. A nonmetallic body 13 is provided of a size to fit into this cup-shaped member which body member may be made of any suitable nonmetallic material to which cement will readily adhere, but I preferably employ celluloid, Xylonite or other similar substances.
When this non-metallic body is positioned in the cup-shaped member I then turn inwardly the thinned out edge or periphery 14: of the cup over the beveled edge 15 of the body thus providing a plain, front surface ufacturing jewelers who mount the gems and complete the finishing of the device ready for the market.
It is found in practice that by the provision of a non-metallic surface such as is provided with this celluloid body, a gem may be very readily and securely fastened to the surface thereof by cement thus eliminating the cost of forming the usual gem setting and mounting a gem therein.
In some cases instead of cementing the imitation gem or ornament directly to the face of the non-metallic member the imitation gems are set in celluloid mountings 18 by which construction the two celluloid surfaces may be more freely secured to each other by cement.
I do not wish to be restricted in this application of connecting a non-metallic block to the particular form of ear ornament shown, as this block may be attached to an ear block, or car drop, or car clamp or any other style of gem supporting ear attachment.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim:
An ear device comprising a stem having a cup-shaped ear engaging member at one end thereof, provided with an inturned edge, a non-metallic body secured and retained in said cup by said edge, said body having an exposed face substantially flush with said edge to which the ornament may be subsequently cemented.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ANTHONY E. WALLER.
