NON-GLABE REFLECTOR.
Applictaion fiIed'December 5, 1919. serial nojua'm.
To allwhomz'tmay concern: 7 I
Be it known that I, ALLEN Mosrmn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Non- Glare Reflectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. i j The invention relates to headlights for vehicles and has for its object the elimination of the glare or blinding rays, while maintaining a, suflicient-concentration of the light to stronglyilluminatethepathin front Specification ot Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 15, 1 9 21.
flector B for the concentration of the light from the lamp C arranged at the focal point. D is a segmental reflector insertible within the reflector B, but of a conical instead of a parabolic form. The reflector D quarter unobstructed.
covers more than one-half of the reflector B, and preferably substantially three-fourths of the surface thereof, leaving the lower As illustrated in Fig. 3, the rays from the "lampC, which are reflected by the conical of the machine. In the present state of the art parabolic reflectors are commonly used for concentrating the rays of thelamp, and the blinding glare is due to th'ese 'concen-. trated rays. The direct rays from the lamp are not obj ectionable e'ven when supplement ed by reflected rays from -the1 rear, pro-. viding that the angle of divergence is reflector. Heretofore, various constructions so as to obstructany raysabovethehorireflector D, are notaltered asto their di- ;,verge nce and therefore are not highly conof the parabolic reflector B, are substantially parallel and arehighly concentrated.
N one of these rays, however, will pass above the horizontal andthey,'therefore,-serve to illuminatethe road without any'blinding glare. Thus I have combined a wide an- A 'gle of"illuminationwith'a high concentranot limited, as by the use ofqa parabolic tion of light upon the road immediatelyin front of the machine. have been devised for shielding the lights,
bolic reflector is used, it is necessaryto ob-' struct more than halfof the lamp area;-
re'flector might be integral.
This is obj ectionableas itis desirable to have 7 some ofthe higher rays for the detection of obstacles ahead. With; other constructions the light concentrated. by the reflector is dispersed by lenses or prisms at the front, 7
but this interferes with thebestillumination of the road. With my improved con-F struction no part. of the headlight isobstructed, but the high: concentration of light is limited to thoserays which are directed upon the path in front of the carand are below the central axis 'offthelam'p.
In the drawings:

1. In a headlight, -a reflector having a lower segment of a parabolic form, and a complementary segment of conical form. I
2-. In a headlight, a reflector comprising a lower segment, being substantially onefourth the entire area of parabolic form,
and a. complementary segment of conical I c I 3. In a headlight, the combination with form.
